Obama: 'The Stars Are Aligned' to Pass Health Care Reform Now (Video)

In case you missed President Obama’s prime-time press conference last night, during which he pushed his $1 trillion plan for universal health care, he tried to convince skeptical Americans that "the stars are aligned" for passage of such a massive overhaul, in the works for 50 years, and warned that families’ economic situations could get worse if nothing is done.
"If we do not act, 14,000 Americans will continue to lose their health insurance every single day," he said, blasting insurance companies for continuing to raise premiums while making spectacular profits. Obama likes the idea of a public option, or government-run insurance plans to compete with the private sector.
"Maybe if you take some of the profit motive out, maybe if you are reducing some of the administrative costs, than you can get an even better deal that’s going to incentivize the private sector to do even better," the president said.
The New York Times picked apart Obama’s speech, pointing to areas of dispute — such as how many medical societies actually support the president’s plan, and how much money Medicare could save. Florida medical officials also took issue with some of Obama’s claims.
Obama has seen his poll numbers slip in recent days, and his handling of the health-care debate is mostly to blame. Politico calls his efforts on this front "flagging." It’s not only Republicans who are protesting the plan, but many Democrats are reluctant, as well. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims she has enough votes to pass a House bill, but even that is in doubt.
"I don’t know who’s doing her vote counting, but she doesn’t have the votes,” said Rep. Bart Stupak, D-MI, who has worked with the band of centrist Blue Dog Democrats blocking the bill, to The Hill. "They’re 100 votes away on a good day," said another Democratic member. A Senate vote isn’t expected until September, at least.
How the heck are we supposed to pay for such a big overhaul? There’s the rub. Obama now wants to tax families making over $1 million a year. One bill in the House now calls for a surtax on families earning $350,000 and up, but House leaders have already signaled they’re rethinking that.
"This isn’t about me," Obama said. "I have great health insurance, and so does every Member of Congress. This debate is about the letters I read when I sit in the Oval Office every day, and the stories I hear at town hall meetings … This debate is not a game for these Americans, and they cannot afford to wait any longer for reform. They are counting on us to get this done."
Watch Obama’s press conference below and tell us what you think. Did he effectively explain his plan?

Those rich people get plenty of tax breaks for all those charitable donations, or they wouldn’t be making them. They are the least of my worries with their retained lawyers and accountants protecting their interests quite well. The money lost to GWB’s tax breaks for his wealthy oil buddies would have funded the Iraq War without deficit spending funded by all those Chinese loans. What do we have to show for that today? A bunch of very nervous Chinese. Now Republicans are boo hooing loudly about taxing annual incomes of one million that would fund sliding scale premiums that would be affordable for a family of four.
This is the same old Republican modus operandi… favoring their wealthy buddies and the corporate elite but saying " screw you" to hard working Americans in the middle class.
It’s an ongoing systemic disease in the Republican Party.
Hi, Maggie, let us not forget all of those rich democrats who get tax breaks. These "rich" democrats and republicans are the small business owners who provide most of the jobs in our country. These tax breaks have kept people employed with benefits. It has been proven that when the government puts the squeeze on these "rich" people, the unemployment rate soars. Wonder why the democrats can’t figure that out?

deberb…visit huffpost and read the full article about how the GOP is sucking up Health Insurance Lobby money at fundraiser, while trying to convince the public, they are trying to also craft a decent healthcare plan…hahahahahahahahahahaha
"Top Republican senators involved in crafting health care reform legislation participated in a health care-specific fundraiser Monday evening. Guests were asked for a $2,000 contribution to the National Republican Senatorial Committee to attend a "Roundtable on Healthcare Issues" — and $5,000 for both the roundtable and dinner with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.).
The nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation cited the event for its upfront offer of special-interest access. All three senators sit on key health committees. Grassley is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, currently embroiled in negotiations with Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) over the pending reform bill. Enzi sits on the Finance Committee and serves as ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which Burr is a member as well.
The Huffington Post visited the event in its continuing quest to cover lobbying as it happens in real time. An NRSC staffer said the event was closed to reporters. Asked if we could gain entrance for $2,000, the staffer reiterated that the event was closed.
Also on the scene: Producer Jeremy Young and cameraman Eric Barreda of Al Jazeera English’s Fault Lines program, there to interview arrivals for a spot on health care reform.
"We’ve been spending several weeks chasing the process and the most difficult part is to actually see the millions of dollars being spent," Young told the Huffington Post. "So we picked this event to see fancy cars pull up, to see people spending between $2,000 and $5,000 in order to have access to senators that are crafting health care policy."
The close-to-the-Capitol venue, Charlie Palmer Steak, is a favorite for fundraisers and a good place to see a few fancy cars and Washington celebrities. The menu offers $20-per-ounce Japanese Wagyu beef and the wine list has bottles that go for $1,000. On Monday evening, such luminaries as former White House press secretary Dana Perino could be seen at the bar enjoying a glass of wine.
The senators avoided Al Jazeera’s camera by using an alternate entrance, but some guests who walked by were kind enough to speak on the record, including Ed Lenz of the American Staffing Association. Lenz said he was hoping to get a sense from the senators of what was happening with the bill.
"It’s part of our system. It’s part of free speech," he said. "There are people from all walks of life and all strata of society who have opportunities to have their voices heard."
