Obama Says He's Not 'Punch Drunk' Over Auto Bailouts, AIG Bonuses (Video)

A little humor goes a long way in the Obama White House.
While the nation’s facing a bevy of economic crises, President Obama and his top decision-makers have a lot on their plate. And though none is a laughing matter, Obama’s trying to keep the mood light. During a "60 Minutes" interview, correspondent Steve Kroft asked the president about helping General Motors and Chrysler avoid bankruptcy, noting that 18 percent of people support bailing out the auto industry, while 67 percent are against it.
"I just want to say that the only thing less popular than putting money into banks is putting money into the auto industry," Obama said. "It’s not a high number," he added with a chuckle when faced with the numbers.
Responded Kroft: "You’re sitting here. And you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people gonna look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money.’ How do you deal with, I mean, explain the mood and your laughter. Are you punch drunk?"
"No, no. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day," Obama explained. "You know, sometimes my team talks about the fact that if you had said to us a year ago that the least of my problems would be Iraq, which is still a pretty serious problem, I don’t think anybody would have believed it. But we’ve got a lot on our plate. And a lot of difficult decisions that we’re gonna have to make."
Obama also hit back at criticism by former vice president Dick Cheney over his counterterrorism policies, saying he’s "drawing the wrong lessons from history." He also said there’s no way Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is resigning. "If he were to come to me [to resign], I’d say ‘sorry, buddy. You’ve still got the job," Obama said. The president also explained that he wasn’t surprised at the public backlash against the AIG bonuses, but that "we can’t govern out of anger." To the perception by some on Wall Street that Obama isn’t being supportive enough, the president — who insists he’s not "anti-Wall Street" — recommends they get out of New York for a harsh dose of reality.
"If you go to North Dakota, or you go to Iowa, or you go to Arkansas, where folks would be thrilled to be making $75,000 a year — without a bonus, then I think they’d get a sense of why people are frustrated," he said. The president also talked about how wife Michelle, and daughters Sasha and Malia are adjusting to life in the White House. Click here to watch more segments. LL. you can go to Politico, they have some video of the Kroft interview with Mr. POTUS. LL it was an embarrassment. Kroft was asking Obama serious questions and he was just laughing and grinning with that smile I hate. This guy is not serious at all! He proved to me that he is way over his head when he gave Pelois and Reid the choice of writing his Stimulus Bill. This was his legacy! Obama was very obtuse during the whole interview.
Then on top of all of this, he had the nerve to slam Cheney on a comment he made about him. How childish is that.
Obama is not very presidential at all!
Libra: …it sounded like a nervous laugh!
I didn’t watch the show either, but I did happen to catch Geithner on C-Span as he was being questioned by Congress last week about the economy. Guess what? He followed the same pattern you and others explain here. Here laughed at every question, and answered none. The Senator would repeat the question again and again in simple syntax. Geithner would reply with a prepared statement. Eventually the questioner just gave up in disgust. Seems odd that the two of these guys are taking the same tack.
Libra: …have you seen Gibbs…
Yes I have, and you’re correct. It’s like how many people can we insult. When it came to Congress, I thought it was out and out rude. Rude to the American people. many of whom voted these guys in. Everything is a joke as trillions (with a t) go down the drain. There are an estimated (by Peter Cohan) $13 trillion in toxic wastes… and Geithner is going to buy them up? With future generation’s money?
Sort of like I wanted to punch Bush after he lied to get us into a war due to "WMDs" then joked about "where are the WMDs? Not under here!" at a fund raiser… while our troops were being killed and our surplus turned into a deficit from the war.
And you want to punch a president for laughing. Strange priorities there.
I was wondering when someone bring up Bush! Bush is not the President any more. When are you going to appreciate this fact!
Bush got in 8 years and Obama took over on Jan. 20, 2009!
and other thing, Bush refuses to say anything negative or even comment about what Obama and his administration is doing.
I wish that was the case with Obama followers. Bush is a class act regardless of what you may think of them.
We can’t say the same about Obama and his minions!

By Lori F. on 03/23/2009 12:00 pm I believe many were very appreciative of this fact as of Jan. 20, 2009! And rightly so!While he was explaining his average day where he works maybe 4 hours of it I was less than impressed. He has absolutely no clue what some of us are dealing with..nor does he really care!
S J, remember Obama never had a job. Obama was a community leader. He didn’t get up in the morning to go to work like normal Americans. Obama doesn’t know that average Americans work 8 to 12 days a week. Clinton was not my guy but I have to say Bill Clinton worked like crazy at doing the job of the American people. Even Clinton’s critics said the "guy was a worker!"
But Obama doesn’t have a clue what he is doing at the WH! And I agree with you , I don’t think he really cares!
