Obama Establishing White House Women's Council

Women will soon have a larger voice in the White House.

President Obama plans on signing an executive order today establishing the White House Council on Women and Girls, which will deal with the role women play in the U.S. economy, among other issues. "The mission of the council will be to provide a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls and to ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families," the White House says.

Obama friend Valerie Jarrett will head the panel, but White House Office of Public Liaison Director Tina Tchen will run day-to-day operations. First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, will attend Wednesday’s signing ceremony.

A large number of women’s groups had asked the president to set up a Cabinet-level division to focus on women. WomenCount told wOw in December that they hoped Obama would gather the country’s best female minds from a variety of political, economic and philosophical backgrounds, to deal with issues such as equal pay for equal work, a better health-care system, the economy, foreign policy and even Iraq.

Last week, Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a new ambassador-at-large post for global women’s issues. Nonprofit CEO Melanne Verveer will be nominated for the post.

Though we have no idea how effective these groups will be, these are definitely steps in the right direction.

I love this President! We’ve been waiting for so long for women to be heard by the White House. This Council is the beginning of a new era for women to influence governmental policy. Now, let’s get busy and pass the ERA!

I feel like this president wants to represent all of us; not just a certain quadrant of society.  He wants to hear our voices.

I agree, Diana.  I haven’t read either one of his biographies, but I think he understand how unlikely is has become for a man from his humble beginnings to become President, so he knows how important it is not to throw any upstanding citizen away.  Unlike so many leaders in the past who, however noble their intentions, had only experienced life as part of the privileged class, Obama has experienced life at nearly every echelon of American society.  And I think, while he expanded his legal acumen and understanding of our Constitution, he’s always been mulling over how to bring liberty and justice "for all."  He might disappoint me, ‘cause I don’t think he walks on water, and he’s bound to be foreced into one or two unpleasant compromises, but it seems to me that’s what he means when he talks about a more perfect union.  He means everybody.

will it be an all black womens council like the black caucus? Or will the council be interested in the needs and rights of the women of no color?

How narrow minded can you get, do you really expect it to be a "blacks only" club?  There has never been such an inclusive President for all than this one.  Such a ludicrous statement and one obviously made to be shall we say a bit on the "racist" side to put it bluntly?  When will you folks grow up and move into the real world this constant negative attitude is what will always be a permanent way of thinking for the Rep Party, don’t be inclusive unless they are like us!!!

Caj,  You are so right. I just can’t understand the need for some people to find fault the absolutely EVERYTHING this presidents does.  Those kind of comments shows such a narrow mind and view of the world.

No problem Maurine. Just wish "what I said" was no longer necessary to be said. Still love your dog… I have one like him/her but he lives with my ex-. I see him as often as possible.

Speak for yourself SJ; I see nothing wrong is being pro-life only in those pro-lifers who bomb clinics and murder doctors.
