Obama Tries to Tap Down AIG Anger in Prime-Time Address

President Obama last night delivered his second prime-time address since taking office. And, not surprisingly, the economic crisis dominated most of the hour-long session. Rather than highlighting his anger of Wall Street’s mismanagement and the thorny AIG bonuses, Mr. Obama attempted to quell the rising tide of populism. Said the president:

You know, there was a lot of outrage and finger-pointing last week, and much of it is understandable. I’m as angry as anybody about those bonuses that went to some of the very same individuals who brought our financial system to its knees, partly because it’s yet another symptom of the culture that led us to this point.

[But we] can’t afford to demonize every investor or entrepreneur who seeks to make a profit. That drive is what has always fueled our prosperity, and it is what will ultimately get these banks lending and our economy moving once more.

The president went on to insist bankers have to realize "that enriching themselves on the taxpayers’ dime is inexcusable, that the days of outsized rewards and reckless speculation that puts us all at risk have to be over." The next step toward recovery, he insisted, was to pass his budget. That, however, may be an entirely new challenge, especially since congressional lawmakers, even Democrats, are looking to trim down the president’s ambitious plan.

Good Day, LL…Boring, boring, and did I mention boring.  What is up with the Sports’ Bar sized TV/Teleprompter…even CNN showed it.  No NY Times; CNN questions; and the media ‘knew’ if they were to be called upon.  Thats why Ann Compton looked like a deer in the headlights when she had to ‘come up’ with a quick query.  Sigh.  On the after show discussions, a dissed CNN said the President sounded ‘tired and cranky.’

Mary….after 3 No-doze pills, I got thru it!!  Very interesting how no newspaper reporters were called on…especially since a dem yesterday put it in a bill to help bail them out…that would mean Govt. would own them and tell them how much they can pay the execs and also tell them what to print….that is not a good idea!!!  Ann Compton was very surprised to be called upon…her look of shock was something.   I think msnbc was about the only ones who rated obama with an A+….but of course….we know why!!!

I thought it would be a good idea to watch CNN (as opposed to Fox or MSNBC at the opposite poles).  I was pretty surprised by their reactions, but then I read on Drudge the listing of the media affiliations that were given the opportunity to question the President.  Hell hath no fury like a journalist spurned!!!

By the way, where did the idea of the Fireside Chat 1.0 go?  I was looking for eco-friendly, gel log, carbon-free fire roaring in the background.

Bravo President Obama!!!! This was the first time these media affiliations were ever given an opportunity to ask questions!!!! Specifically hispanic media and Ebony Magazine. It’s about time! Under President Obama’s Administration everyone gets an opportunity to participate!!!!

Remember the uproar when the McCain campaign didn’t immediately let the bloodthirsty press at Sarah Palin? Imagine if Obama was a Republican, allowing only easy questions from friendly sources when discussing such an astronomically important topic? And imagine if he, as a Republican, couldn’t answer questions without a teleprompter? The press would savage him like never before witnessed in history. Good thing for him that he’s a Democrat, so the worst he’ll ever see is gentle scolding!

Rachel, isn’t that curious?   If Obama had been running as a republican, the democrats would’ve shredded him for the very things he did while campaigning and now as President.   There’s nothing wrong with using the " T P "  as presidents have done before him.   The problem is that he is such a terrible, ineffective speaker when he is NOT on it.   That’s what is telling.   It’s like he cannot think for himself and if your "heart" is not into what your brain is saying….well, it becomes apparent if you are NOT on the " T P."   Honestly, he is one of the worst speakers I’ve ever heard off TP

I know. Just think of all the flack that Bush took. They’d have a field day with Obama, if he was on the other team.

Mary QC:   As of today, we can no longer  mention the teleprompter.   Just thought I’d let you know in case your post is removed.

Thanks for the heads up?  I understand how things go left or right in discussing the X, but it is in the news all over the place today.  I promise to play nice in the internet sand box.

That’s what it has come to…a controlled sandbox.   BTW, I don’t know of any other president who would’ve needed/required an "X" of any size when conducting a question and answer session.   I don’t know of any other presidents who would been as selective in deciding which news channels/newspapers could ask the questions.    He is proving to be more and more of a control freak everyday.

Deber, that question mark is in error…its supposed to be an exclamation mark (of thanks)!!!  TY!!!
