Is Obama's hope for global denuclearization realistic?

President Obama is beginning to push for a nuclear-free future. Do you think this is a realistic goal?

James - Yes, one win by the Lions this season would indeed be a step-up, and under Jim Schwartz, it’s possible they might win five (close) games.  I look forward to discussing the upcoming football season with you, and accessing my July prediction with you, as well.  Such a loss for Steve McNair’s family, his friends and the football community.  All the best to you, your family and your doctors, next week.  Patty (I’ve undergone over 50 surgical procedures, and I’m still "here.")

Murph, are you sure football isn’t mentioned in the Bible? ;-)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XnqAdSI5MU

Well, James, as usual, you’ve done your homework! What a great video…. "Notre Dame, Where the Church Does Its Thinking." After seeing the video, I now understand why ND beats everyone. With the "Quarterback" it has and the veeerrryyy long bench (so many players ready to come in), there is no doubt they intimidate other teams. I bow to your knowledge once again. Do you think we might be able to recruit the Quarterback out from under ND for UNC-CH?

Not in this lifetime, Murph. I’m a Michigan fan, myself! And I like Michigan State, too. My Dad actually played cornerback for the Spartans circa 1950 (and was on the undefeated boxing team!)

Ok, James. I realize if anyone were to have first dibs at recruiting the NC Quarterback, it’d be you and your Michigan State. I’m not sure anything can ever help UNC anyway. They are more into basketball, anyway. That’s fantastic that your dad played cornerback for the Spartans… guess he was fast, huh? So, I’ll give up… let ND be and glory be to MSU too!

James, my grandfather said that precisely what you said (about Armageddon) has been said for hundreds of years … and to relate such to Nostradamus, makes me wonder about biblical prophecies - perhaps it is that, prophecy. And, if it isn’t or is - - - don’t worry about spending money on quality products.

I think it is a great idea but No it is not realistic and it wont work.  Who is to say that we can get every other Country to agree and start destroying their nuclear weapons and reactors yet we dont.  There is no 100% trust between each Country to actually get rid of nuclear products.

Maybe future generations will swing around to rational thining. If we can get educated people in office in other countries this could be a future  reality.

"A lovely idea?" Lovely? What a strange word to use when referring to something like nuclear weapons. For the first time since the initial efforts of the Truman administration , a movement to eliminate nuclear weapons has developed not only from the political left but from the  center of the security elite. This promises to give the cause of arms reduction a political plausibility and importance that previous efforts, including the broad-based Nuclear Freeze Movement of the 1980s, have lacked. Whether these efforts will succeed in their ultimate goal is far from clear; but if the movement can be sustained and gather wider support, this could reduce threats of nuclear war and nuclear terrorism. There have been some excellent books written on this subject. Here’s a short list:

Arsenals of Folly: the Making of the Nuclear Race–––Richard Rhodes

The Seventh Decade: The New shape of Nuclear Danger––Jonathon Schell

Deception: Pakistan, the United States, and the Secret Trade in Nuclear Weapons––A. Levy & C. Clark

America and the Islamic Bomb: the Deadly Compromise––David Armstrong

I think it’s a wonderful idea and the world would be a better place for it but I doubt that will ever happen.  What a wonderful thought though a world with no wars and people just getting along…we can but dream!

Very unrealistic but I wish it were possible.  "Can’t we all just get along" was one of my favorite quotes.  It seems as long as there are maniacs with crazy visions and greed it’s not possible.

It’s not realistic to think that other countries will give up their nukes, and especially that radical nonstate actors — the most dangerous groups — will give up their quest for nukes.  Given that the former USSR cannot account for all of their weapons, I make the worst-case assumption that some of these groups - or at least, black-market weapons dealers - already have some in their hands.

Thank God it is not a technically easy thing to actually detonate one.
