Bleak Outlook for This Season's Outbreak of Swine Flu; Up to 90,000 Americans Could Die (Video)

With up to 90,000 Americans at risk of dying of swine flu this fall, public health officials are alerting schools to what they can do to prevent themselves from being incubators for the deadly H1N1 virus. Meanwhile, government officials are pushing drug companies to make sure the vaccine is available as early as next month.
The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) warned that swine flu "poses a serious health threat" to the nation and up to half of the American population could come down with the strain and 90,000 could die this season. As many as 1.8 million people could end up in the hospital seeking treatment for the H1N1 virus. At its worst, between 60 and 120 million Americans could get sick with this particular flu, while another 30 million could contract it but not actually show symptoms.
"This is going to be fairly serious," Harold Varmus of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and PCAST co-chairman, told Newsday. "It’s going to stress every aspect of our health system."

Whereas the seasonal flu is also deadly and often causes death in the elderly, swine flu mainly preys on children and young adults. The vaccine was supposed to be made available beginning October 15 but that date could be pushed up. Health-care providers and pregnant woman will be among the first to receive the vaccine. And, of course, everyone should cover their mouths and frequently wash their hands, among other things, to avoid contracting the virus.
"This isn’t the flu that we’re used to," said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. "The 2009 H1N1 virus will cause a more serious threat this fall."

BTW 90k is a small percentage statistically considering the population as of July 2008 was 304,059,724.
And the operative word in the 90k death is "could". Doesn’t mean it will happen.
Here’s the CDC recommendations for H1N1:

Thank you so much for provinding this information. It helps so much because there are people on this site who don’t understand how the government works, how data and projections are made. You know, the kind of people who believe in death panels and how the President wasn’t really born here….that kind of thing. :-)
It’s amazing how many people are so willing to inject a barely tested substance into their bodies. You do know that the pharm. companies are immune from being sued if the vaccine has any negative side effects, right? And that a vaccine is simply a weakened or dead virus?
Also, why isn’t anyone noting that the report also stated, "the 2009-H1N1 virus does not thus far seem to show the virulence associated with the devastating pandemic of 1918-19; moreover, medical science now has many potent tools at our disposal to mitigate an influenza pandemic in ways that were not possible ninety years ago."?

Or that the death rate, according to WHO’s calculations, is less than 1%, and that assumes that every single person who was infected is diagnosed; in reality, many people are most likely staying home and having chicken noodle soup.

We do not need to panic, we need common sense! Wash your hands, cover your mouth, carry a small bottle of Purell, and wipe down shopping cart handles before using them, and most importantly, if you are sick (or your child is) stay home!!!!
I will not turn my kids into guinea pigs for a rushed vaccine! I will however, practice every other safety measure that I can. Now that we are back to school, I even have my children change their clothes, when they get home. I have also donated Purell and Clorox wipes for all of their classroom teachers.
Rachel I often get badly ill when given flu shots also. I work in a hospital and the "bug guy" the man who gives employees vaccines actually set me up to get last years flu shot in two parts, he gave me a half dose each time instead of a full dose and I did not get sick from a flu shot for the first time. Of course it is convenient for me considering he comes by my office to administer the dose, I could see how it could be harder for someone to get to their doctors office for two shots, and you would have to have a Dr. willing to do this of course. Just thought I’d share this with you in-case you wanted the flu shot but didn’t want to get ill.
