Have you ever switched political parties?

Arlen Specter recently moved from the Republican to Democratic ticket. Have you ever switched parties?

This statement confuses me and I don’t want to acceot my first impression - that Obama "running for office" (I guess you mean the primaries for the Dem nomination) meant you rejected the Democratic party because he’s biracial. All the Dems in the primary were "Libs" (whatever that means) - why are you only Obama-phobic?

As for "Libs" - are you saying you don’t want a tax cut? you don’t want affordable health care? you don’t want to stop depending on foreign oil? you don’t want our kids to have better schools? you want us to continue to torture prisoners of war?  This was the Democratic platform - for all the candidates, not just the black guy.

Georgia………Please don’t play the race card with me! Color has nothing to do with it. Obama was never vetted and there were too many questions concerning this man’s past that wasn’t answered. I didn’t respect him then and I sure don’t respect him now…..he’s taking our country into socialism. As far as the Libs, read some of the nasty comments on these sites…such hatred for the republican party and anyone who is associated with it. I vote for the candidate and Obama was not my choice..Thank god we still have the freedom of choice and speech in this country.

There was a Republican representative at one time that I voted for on a couple of occasions, but once he was outed as a homosexual he didn’t run again.  Straight ticket for me ever since.

Whatever for—why would I want to join the party of buffoons—the Repubs.

Used to be a Republican when I voted the first time, then switched to the Democratic party after that and have been happy ever since.

There needs to be at least one more choice: Never changed parties, but voted across party lines on occasion. That would be me! (o_O)

the one and only time I crossed party lines was when I voted for McCain against GW in those primaries. I did not want that man in office!

when I became a journalist, I switched my party registration to independent. And as a journalist, I had to be independent.

I am a  democrat but parties never really mattered to me.  The issues and the candidate were my concern.

However the Republican party has become so interested in things best left to the individual such as gay marriage and abortion.

Republicans seem more libertarian and an anti government.  They are willing to destroy the country.  They toss around personal responsibility in order not to pass consumer oriented legislation.

Starry-

With all due respect, your generalization amazes me. How can a party destroy the country when they believe in COUNTRY FIRST. Do you know the definiton of libertarian? Can you please take the time to look it up and the re-read your post. And yes Marting Luther King was a republican-that’s a fact! Do you believe in freedom of speech? Do you believe in freedom of religion? Do you believe in the right to protect yourself?

i have always been a democrat and this was after the reagan years. i didn’t start voting until the end of them. i was raised a jehovah’s witness and we were not alloowed to be part of government.

i saw what reaganomics did to funding for schools, libraries and mental health. it pretty much abolished most of it and ran it into the ground. i decided then and there to stick with the democrats and go with freedom, help for the poor and understanding. the only time i have crossed party lines was when GWB was running against kerry. i had a really bad feeling about him because of 911. i had a dream that we were invaded and taken over by extremists. so i voted for GWB and although i know he did some pretty bad things at least he dealt with possible invasions and that was important at that time. BUT i would never vote for him again.

as my bff says, "it’s not who you vote for, but who you vote against!" she says, "i would rather vote for a blind, 3 legged monkey than vote for that … (put candidates name here)!" so i told her when i voted for bush that, he was "just the blind three legged monkey for me!" (she has never forgiven me and thinks my repub husband at the time was an influence, actually it was a dream and my democratic thinking son).

i believe that it’s not the party you in that counts (so i’m probably going to go independant before the next election) but what the candidates do for me. i voted for Obama and stand behind it and him. even if i didn’t i would still respect him as my president just like i respected all the other presidents before him even if i thought some of them were just horrible. i vote for the best candidate in my own humble opinion. i don’t care HOW you vote, just that you did. because if you don’t vote you don’t have a voice. right or wrong at least you spoke out!!!

I was raised in a Republican family so when I reached voting age I registered as a Republican.  I rarely voted Republican.

I was having a political discussion with my brother in law one day when I was in my early 30’s……..He asked how I was registered.  I told him Republican.  He laughed and said Dona get down and re-register……….you are such a Liberal Democrat.

I did just that……….now a died in the wool  Democrat.

I have two sons, one a Republican and one a Democrat……..I’m encouraging my grandchildren to be Democrats……….so far so good.

"I’m encouraging my grandchildren to be Democrats……….so far so good."

Wouldn’t encouraging them to think and develop their own understanding of opinions on issues be better than attempting to indoctrinate your children’s children with your views?

My encouragement is done by expressing my views in a way that opens discussion.

Both my granddaughters have already registered as Democrats…..Their choice.  They are 24 and 32……they do think for themselves……..always have.  They just agree with me.  My great grandson who is 13 said he hasn’t decided yet.  His father is a Republican and his mother is a Democrat.

As to your comment about indoctrinating them………..give me a break…..children learn by listening to adult conversation and either disagree or agree.  They will make up their own minds of course.  I find it interesting to hear the views they pick up at school.  Their Teachers also influence them.  Everything around them have an influence.

As I said I was raised in a Republican home……..we did have open discussions, my parents allowed us to be free thinkers.

As I do with my family.  I’m just pleased that they agree with me on my politics.
