I would rather vote for the candidate rather than the party. Most states make that so hard forcing you to switch your party affiliation in order to vote your choice.
I’m a registered Republican who frequently votes Democrat. :P I am a Republican because I find that the Republican party is more in line with my way of thinking than the Democratic party, though by no means completely. Nonetheless, there are good and bad candidates on both sides, and there’s no way in heck that I’m going to vote for a candidate who I think will be bad for my city/state/country just because of their party. :P
My family was Republican but they were fiscal cons, not idealogues and had a healthy respect for separation of powers and church and state separation politics was always discussed. They liked Reagan. Bush Sr. they were lukewarm about.
We had some decent repubs here in Kansas like Nancy Kassebaum and Bob Dole but frankly those two would be considered moderate repubs these days and as a breed they have vanished in Kansas thats why so many of us support people like Kathleen Sebelious that is a democrat. When our repub party in Kansas was taken over by ultra crazyservatives many of us fled or changed parties.
I have been a registered Repub, Democrat, Independent and then back to Democrat so I could caucus this election cycle. I change depending on who is ticking me off the most. I vote for person not party.
I was raised Dixicrat, but mostly vote for whom I believe will do the best job. Although smaller goverment, lower taxes, more freedom sounds good to me.
I always vote for the candidate that I feel is best for the job, no matter which party he is in. However, I am in agreement with Mr Specter, in that I feel that the Republican party has gone too far to the right. However, I am not sure that I have enough faith in the Democrat party to switch to them, either.

Never bothered formally switching, but do vote both parties. Though lately, I’m so displeased with them both.
