Pope Calls for Palestinian State as Hitler Past Haunts

A Vatican aide denied — then acknowledged — Pope Benedict XVI’s past in the Hitler Youth.

Pope Benedict XVI yesterday called for a Palestinian state and peace in the Middle East, but his message of hope has been overshadowed by the resurrection of his enrollment in the Hitler Youth.

Benedict caused a minor scandal earlier this week when, while at a Holocaust memorial in Israel, he failed to mention Nazis or Germans when he said that Hitler’s eradication of Jews should never be forgotten. Critics lashed out at him, and pointed out that he had once been a member of the Hitler Youth, but a Vatican aide insisted that wasn’t true. That aide must not have read Benedict’s book, in which he admits to having been a part of the group.

In Bethlehem this morning, Benedict said the Palestinians should have a sovereign state "in the land of your forefathers, secure and at peace with its neighbors, within internationally recognized borders.” He also urged Palestinian youth to steer clear of violence, which the Catholic leader referred to as a "temptation."

I am not a big pope fan. However if he was a Hitler youth at that time wasn’t it a requirement? Guess I will have to research that. I do love real history.

wowOwow staff dahlings, is there a contest this week to see how many headlines you can write with the word "Hitler" in them, my dears?

Mommy — You are so right on!  They must still have those eighteen year olds on the payroll!  Guess good people are hard to find these days!

I am a fan of this pope. And yes I was a requirement to be in the Hitler Youth. Either that or have your family disgraced. I also love real history.

I’m not a "fan" of religion but he’s right:  the Palestinians need a state of their own.

f p, I am not a fan of "organized" religion but the pope is right on this and it is about time the Palestinians and Israel make a lasting peace

Too bad the Palestinians don’t share the Pope’s vision of a two state solution; instead, they envision a 1 state solution — and it’s not Israel, at least, not a Jewish Israel.

”..in the land of your forefathers, secure and at peace with its neighbors within internationally recognized borders…."

Precisely what Palestinians will never desire as long as Israel exists.

Exactly.

Maggie you are right on about that.  They would love all Jews to be dead and that will never change.  My favorite book Exodus says it all.  At one time they could live together but the poison is to deep.  This goes beyond racism and will never change in our lifetime.
