Lori Drew MySpace Conviction | 05/19/2009 7:45 am

Punishment Pending for Lori Drew, Missouri Mom Whose Web Hoax Allegedly Led to Girl's Suicide

Woman at the center of ‘cyber-bullying’ case could get probation or up to three years in prison.

Missouri mom Lori Drew never imagined she would end up in jail for impersonating a teenage boy on MySpace. But that’s exactly where she could have ended up after a jury in Los Angeles convicted the woman of a cyber-bullying hoax that led to the death of a 13-year-old girl.

But a federal judge on Monday postponed the sentencing of Drew, who was convicted of unauthorized computer access last year after the prosecutors say she, her daughter and a teenage pal posed as a teenage boy and then flirted with Drew’s daughter’s estranged friend, Megan Meier, who later hung herself with a belt after the "boy" sent her a chat saying, "The world would be a better place without you."

Drew, 50, was convicted of three misdemeanor charges for unauthorized computer access and faced a maximum sentence of three years and a $300,000 fine, but she may just get probation and a $5,000 fine, reports Wired. Missouri authorities failed to file a case in that state, so it’s being heard in California, where MySpace is headquartered. The prosecutors have been trying to put Drew behind bars for violating MySpace’s terms of service. Megan’s parents want to see the maximum penalty — three years — imposed.

"It just sickens me that it was an adult playing with the mind of a 13-year-old child," said Megan’s father, Ron Meier.

Sentencing is now set for July 2.

It boggles the mind that a 50 year old woman would stoop to such viciously juvenile tactics.

I have followed this case, and I think drew should get 3 years max.  What she did to that young girl is disgusting, especially having a daughter of her own…..would she ever wish someone to do that to her own daughter.  She knew the young girl had problems anyway, and then to do this stunt to her just shows she didn’t care what the outcome would be….she just wanted revenge for her daughter…this woman is sick and a fine is just a slap on the hand.  This woman has blood on her hands, and I hope she remembers everyday that she took a young girls life with her stupid prank.  This woman doesn’t deserve to even be called a "mother".

This woman is the epitomy of evil…I feel for the family of this poor girl that was attacked and ultimately died at the ‘hands’ of this creep. I also pray for her daughter as she watches her Mom be put in prison for this.

A cat is a better parent than this woman.  She preyed on a child , and she should do ten years in a Turkish prison.

Throw the book at her! Just as Lady Libra stated, "This woman has this child’s blood on her hands". She will have to live the rest of her life with the constant reminder of what she has done. This woman (If one can call her such) is the consumate Bully.

It’s a scarry thing to think that a woman & mother would go down that path.  To mess with that poor girls fragile mind is beyond words.  I hope the Judge gives her three years which to me is a light sentence compared to the poor parents.  I love the internet and what it can do for us but it’s also being used for evil and what this woman did was just plain evil.

This monster needs to do some serious time! … I am appalled at the justice system for giving her a slap on the wrist! … What about this poor little girl who died as a result? … What about the deceased childs parents, family and friends?

I think this is a topic we can all agree on…the sentence this lady is getting is not enough.  A life was snuffed out at 13, 13, ladies we remember when we were 13 and all that we were learning and feeling and imagine thats it.  Nothing more and her family.  Yes every parent is protective over their child and doesnt want to see them hurting but isnt that part of life lessons, to live and learn…but to take matters into your own hands like this, I just can’t imagine.  What happened to parents sitting down and talking with other parents to work things out?

I think this is soo wrong. I can’t believe this woman is going to get probation or 3 years in jail! I say life. She had a hand in a death in a way. So she should get the same as the 13 year old girl.!

I agree with the father, Ron Meier, 100%.  Maximum penalty (and it isn’t long enough).  What a horrible thing to do to a 13-year old child — particularly one she knew, and knew she could hurt to the ultimate.

I am appalled by the fact that Lori Drew thinks she has done nothing wrong. She thinks that she is a victim. She knew that Megan Meier had emotional problems when she started her scheme. I think she should have to serve time with a picture of Megan in her cell to remind her of why she is there.
