Rep. Moran Takes Hard-Line on Erectile Dysfunction Commercials

Jim Moran doesn’t want to see any more adverts for Viagra during family-friendly hours.

Rep. Jim Moran has had enough of erectile dysfunction ads, and plans to do something about it.

Moran, a Democrat from Virginia, has introduced a House bill that would restrict ads for products like Viagra and other products that treat ED from airing between 6 AM and 10 PM.

The lawmaker told CNN: "A number of people have come up, including colleagues, and said ‘I’m fed up, I don’t want my three- or four-year-old grandkid asking me what erectile dysfunction is all about.’ And I don’t blame them.” Thus, Moran hopes the FCC will deem the commercials as "indecent."

Viagra-maker Pfizer insists they’re acting justly by airing the ads during more mainstream hours:

In line with our policies and the policies of the industry, Viagra advertising is aired in shows most likely to reach men suffering from erectile dysfunction. ED can be a signal for other serious medical issues, including high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Moran’s initiative makes us wonder if other sex-related ads will be restricted, like commercials for herpes medication and birth control.

Thank you!!!!    Time to get off the air along with feminine products and undergarments.    If we don’t do it now the next thing our small children will be watching are two women french kissing for a toothpaste commercial!

Personally, I like AFLAC and GEICO commercials.

Agreed!  Those were exactly my thoughts…. nothing like being the only girl in a room full of guys watching a football game when an advertisement for tampons comes on.  Enough to make you run for the door!

Can we add the condom commercials too?  The latest from Trojan ("Our own stimulous package") just makes me want to hurl on all levels… especially since they use an American Eagle at the beginning of the commercial!

No kidding….its not like we have a choice NOT to buy the stuff….good gawd…I remember the first time I had to sit in mixed company and suffer through watching the elephant in the room….trying to "get that fresh feeling"….argghhhhhh!

I suppose virtually all male products, whatever they might be, are used in conjunction with a sexy broad, phallic objectsm or associations such as the "American Eagle" - fly like an Eagle. Kind of sad that this is the only way to penetrate the male brain.

…" Viagra advertising is aired in shows most likely to reach men suffering from erectile dysfunction…."

Oh please.  Like the reality shows?  Do they actually think women do not watch Survivor or the Great American Race?

I am also sick of these sexually oriented commercials during prime time.  Yes, they have the right to advertise, but make it after 9:00 PM when little curious and impressionable minds are in bed.

I don’t know…that late might put it past their bedtime. Assuming central time zone, that is.

I think they should ban the pill, anyway.

They need to restrict these type of commercials.  Nothing beats having your 4 year old daughter asking you "why is the man and woman in the bathtub facing outdoors?"

Funny you should mention the cast iron bathtubs…outdoors. I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry Seinfeld on tour this past winter, and he did a routine on the Viagra commercials…and those damn bathtubs (ya think dragging a couple cast iron tubs outside..that the ensuing fatigue and hernias could maybe hinder the romance department?). I don’t do Jerry justice…but you get the idea.

I have one daughter and her reponse to those ads? "EW!" and runs out of the room.

Great advertising!  WE either change the channel or run screaming from the room… not the response they want!

Until a few years ago, I never really thought about these type of commercials.  Then my daughter came along.  She’s extremely observant and quite a tape recorder!  You won’t hear ANY complaints from me regarding this type of legislation.

I remember when they couldn’t even advertise bras with a live model. They were always on a plastic dummy.

But you are all right, I agree. I quickly change the channel when my grandchildren are in the room too.
