John McCain's Mom on Keith Olbermann: 'He's Vicious,' Agreed With Steele on Limbaugh

Roberta McCain has a low opinion of Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann.

Roberta McCain, mother of Sen. John McCain, kept mum throughout last year’s presidential campaign, but now she’s letting loose in a new interview with the the Los Angeles Times.

Though she insists she won’t criticize President Obama, McCain had plenty of vitriol for MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann, whom she described as vicious: "He comes on as if he is hysterical. He is so vicious. You get as old as I am and you realize it’s the easiest thing in the world to be acerbic like that."

Nor does she have the highest opinion of Rush Limbaugh. She thinks Michael Steele was right on the money when he called the radio host "ugly," and wishes Steele hadn’t bucked to political pressure to apologize: "It was the first smart thing I had heard anybody say about [Limbaugh] … and the Republicans made him back down. Why? Tell me why. He should have stuck to his guns."

At 97 years old, Mrs. McCain’s still kicking — and we hope she goes on for years to come!

Agreed. Limbaugh is a big-mouthed buffoon quite frequently; Republicans like Steele would be better off ignoring him altogether. Let’s face it, he’s an entertainer; he might have really bad ideas, really good ideas, or ones somewhere in between, but he is an entertainer, NOT a politician! He is going to say things that will entertain, through controversy, humor, or whatever else he needs to employ!

Likewise, she’s absolutely right about Olbermann. If that dude doesn’t calm down, he’s going to develop some serious health problems (although one can’t help but get the feeling that his brain has died already…).

The best thing about getting old is that you can say whatever the hell you want and no one has the nerve to tell you to shut up ! I’ve been practicing.

Good for her.

It’s not surprising that a woman 97 years old would be turned off by both Rush AND Olberman. No matter what their politics would be, that sort of in your face delivery would insult the senses of anyone not brought up in and used to this modern era of crass, abrasive punditry.

I agree with her about Limp-Paw, but I thank God for Keith Olbermann - he is one of the rare few who stands up to the sleaze and slime of the right wing fanatic republicans - those who have created the present  cess pool in Washington, but  thank God are now outnumbered by more decent reasonable people of their own party. I’m glad Ed Schultz is now on MSNBC (The Ed Show) because he joings Keith Olbermann in speaking up for the poor and down trodden and defending our country against the bands of thugs that have brought our country down to it’s present level.  I might add that it is wonderful to see a 97 year old woman out there expressing herself and her views whatever they may be.

Translation: the loud-mouthed buffoon on my side is totally super awesome, but the loud-mouthed buffoon on the other side is horrible, evil, and no good!

This post reminds me of one of the Black Adder IV episodes, when General Melchit (sp?) is discussing spies. Captain Darling tells Black Adder that there’s a German spy in the hospital, to which he replies that they are dirty, sneaking, awful swine; then the Captain mentions English spies, and the General praises the "brave lads!"

Truth to be told, Rush and Olbermann are simply different stripes on the same skunk.

No Rachel… Rush is a loud mouthed buffoon. Olberman is just loud mouthed, but he is by no means a buffoon.

I think any reasonably objective person would disagree with that, Deburca. Of course, neither he nor Rush is a buffoon every second of every day; but both are frequently.

You get as old as I am and you realize it’s the easiest thing in the world to be acerbic like that.

No truer words were ever spoken. We have all seen and read "acerbic" comments and statements from those who post on this site who are up in years. Hiding behind their age as justification to say some of the things they say. I personally adore Mrs. McCain. It speaks to the full life she has led and continues to live, that she is 97 and still spunky and outspoken in the manner she is.

I am curious however to hear what she thinks of President Obama. Given her age she has seen civil rights in our country that not many of us can speak to from personal experience, as she could. Her silence on this subject may mean she doesn’t care for him. What is that old adage….If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.
