President Obama, Notre Dame Abortion Flap | 05/05/2009 11:00 am

'Roe' of 'Roe vs. Wade' Says Notre Dame Sets Bad Example With Abortion-Supporting Obama as Graduation Speaker

Anti-abortionist Randall Terry of Operation Rescue calls Obama the ‘premier child-slayer of the western hemisphere’ after arrest on campus.

Will Notre Dame ever be able to recover from the hullabaloo over President Obama coming to campus?

Campus leaders have been under fire for inviting someone pro-choice to speak at the Catholic university’s commencement. Now, even the woman whose name will live in infamy from the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in America, is coming out to say Notre Dame has set a bad example. Meanwhile, one of the men at the forefront of the anti-abortion movement has called Obama "the premier child-slayer of the western hemisphere."

Norma McCorvey, otherwise known as "Jane Roe" and who has since then become a pro-life activist, told the Daily Telegraph: "Obama is not the ideal person to speak to a young bunch of kids that are going out into the world for the first time." She added:

These people will have to remember that it was him who spoke at their graduation for the rest of their natural lives. We have many in the pro-life movement that are better qualified to do this … These people will have to remember that it was him who spoke at their graduation for the rest of their natural lives. We have many in the pro-life movement that are better qualified to do this. I am really surprised more parents haven’t pulled their kids out. I have heard that many of them will not show up for this reason.

McCorvey has joined 60 Catholic bishops in condemning Notre Dame’s decision.

Meanwhile, Operation Rescue founder Randall A. Terry, who promised to lead a "circus" of protests against Obama on graduation day, was arrested last Friday after he and another man were pushing strollers holding bloodied baby dolls on campus, complete with bumper stickers that read: "Obama ‘09/One Dead Baby at a Time/Notre Dame"

Terry is holding a press conference today to talk about his arrest and detention, and likened his protests to that of Dr. Martin Luther King. "They deliberately created social tension in order to expose the grave evil of segregation. Obama’s promotion of killing the innocent is far more evil than segregation; therefore, how can we react with less clarity, valor and tension?" Terry said.

In blasting his incarceration, Terry calls Obama "the premier child-slayer of the western hemisphere," adding, "Obama will be honored and welcomed on campus, though the innocent die at his command; we were jailed, and banned forever from the campus, because we defended those dying at his order."

And now there seems to be another Catholic/abortion flap not involving Obama, but MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews. Matthews, who supports abortion rights, was invited to deliver the graduation speech and receive an honorary doctorate next week at St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania. Needless to say, that’s not sitting well with everyone.

Stephen Majewski, a St. Joseph alumnus, writes in The Philadelphia Inquirer Monday: "The leaders of St. Joseph’s University seem intent on killing the school’s Catholic identity."

I am sad to see this woman who helped women recieve choice trying to take it away. Each person has to make choices for their lives. NO ONE has the right to make those choices for them. If you don’t want an abortion then don’t have one. However DO NOT try to tell others what to do and take away their rights. We need to move forward not backward. When abotion was illegal there were back alley abortions and women suffered. I say never again. I for one will stand up for the freedom to choose!

Not only did she help them ‘receive choice’  but SHE got to make a choice when it affected HER life but now she wants to take that right away from other women when it affects THEIR rights. Narcissistic of her.

there are plenty of women out there who do *not* regret their choice. it is solely up to the individual to make their life choices. period.

can we move on to ACTUAL issues now, such as feeding the hungry, trying to solve the issue of poverty, healing the sick, and and promoting peace where there is none?

OK, I have been reading a lot of posts this morning on different sites, and to me, it is most upsetting that people are being so nasty to each other, in discussing this topic.  I am not trying to discuss the topic of abortion, but rather, the events surrounding the Notre Dame commencement.  A lot of the comments are very hypocritical.  Let me say, the majority of the graduating class is honored by the fact that THE President of the United States is speaking at THEIR graduation.  (I know this because I live 2 blocks from the campus and I frequently visit the campus and speak with people).  I would also like to say that I have seen the banners flying overhead, and so has my 13 year-old daughter, and both of us feel that the actions of pro-life extremists are counterproductive.  They are not going to stop the President from speaking and they are doing nothing more but acting disgusting and hypocritical (Jesus would not act in that way).  Yes, we have freedom of speech in our country, but there are CHILDREN who are able to see these images and ‘disgusting behavior’ on the part of the pro-life extremists… "The Church" will NEVER agree 100% with ANY PRESIDENT, so maybe they shouldn’t ever invite a President to speak again???  (sarcasm)  Can’t these organizations use they resources in a more positive and proactive way?

I agree that its a woman’s right to choose but I see where those are coming from that if the Catholic Church does not believe in abortion how it would go against them if someone who is for abortion to speak at a function.  I mean we are mad at a young lady for saying she believes marriage is between a man and a woman, YET, not upset that at a Catholic University they dont want someone who doesnt believe what they believe…

Great post, CH…somehow I missed it the first time thru.

The pretzel like logic that must be followed by the TOLERANT to be TOLERANT of all things they TOLERATE but to wildly express INTOLERANCE of the others whose beliefs they can’t TOLERATE.  Like a small child, petulant child…I always wait for the tiny fist pounded on a table…’because I say so!’

There is no true logic followed.  Just ‘feelings.’

You’re quite right Mary - I do struggle with being tolerant of men like Randall Terry who’ve made a career of trying to gain control of my health and my family. I’ve met Mr Terry and faced his terror squads at women’s health clinics. I’ve escorted women through his mobs of mostly unemployed white male bullies to get Pap smears and pre-natal care.

"There is no true logic followed.  Just ‘feelings.’ "

Wrong on this. I am an educated and rational woman of deep faith and I struggle with questions of right and wrong and all the complications in between. So no I won’t tolerate lightly being mischaracterized.

Oh, great.  A Dr. King wannabe.  If the Catholic universities keep this nonsense up, they will eventually only have Boy or Girl Scouts at their ceremonies.

It’s all about freedom of choice.  If  Randall Terry wants to yap about children, perhaps he can offer up a sound solution about all of the unwanted , hungry, diseased, abandoned children in the US.  You know, the ones the pro lifers always assure us should have quality of life.

And that is the operative word… " should".  I agree with that part.

Hey Maggie,

Are you pushing yourself away from the table a little more often and getting off your duff to feed those "Hungry, unwanted, diseased and abandoned children" Like us Pro-Lifers do! Keep in mind, many of us continue our care for those we fought for in the womb. AND, you might educate yourself as to why these children are in the state they are in…..I’ll give you a hint, It’s more than likely due to the same mentality that wanted them dead in the first place!

Yes, I do contribute to food banks and have worked charitable fund raisers , including those for children, and will continue to do so.  Thank you for your interest.  But you have missed my point entirely about abandoned children.  I also don’t need your hints but thanks anyway.  That’s very kind of you.

No Maggie, I think you missed my point. In other words, the suggestion that "Killing them off" beforehand would have been better when one simply has no knowledge beforehand, the later outcome of one’s life, is certainly ridiculous. AND, secondly, anyone who would not attempt to do all they could in being a good and providing parent to the child they brought into this world, is probably one of the same mindset, that thinks it better to abort……In other words, not fit for anything!

…"  is probably one of the same mindset…." .  Probably?   Another faulty inference with no sound rationale to back it.

Yes. You miss the point.

Keep reaching Maggie, I’ll have faith for ya, that you’ll be the one to "get the point"!
