Roxana Saberi's Release Not Just About Freedom

Free from jail, Roxana Saberi may return home next week.

Iranian officials yesterday released American journalist Roxana Saberi, and her lawyer said yesterday that the 32-year-old may return to the United States as early as next week. While President Barack Obama described the suspension of Saberi’s eight-year prison sentence as "humanitarian," many diplomatic officials suggest that the move was purely political.

The Obama administration has been working on thawing relations with the republic, and, according to sources, made Saberi’s release a key component of potential talks. One administration official told The New York Times, "There wasn’t going to be any major new administration initiative toward Iran without this case resolved.”

Saberi was arrested in January after buying a bottle of wine, but was later charged with working as a journalist without a permit and with espionage.

Though the details remain unknown, the journalist’s lawyer told The Washington Post, "[Saberi] accepted she had made a mistake and got access to documents she should not have. But there was no transfer of any classified information."

S G, yes diplomacy is a great thing, of course the republicans will put their spin on this so here we go again! Another day, another load of spin!!

The spin dry cycle, Mel!

I think it will be very interesting to discover the background diplomacy that went on with this.  I hope she ends up on Charlie Rose for a real conversation about her ordeal.  She is a very lucky young woman.  And a brave one, too.

And a very stupid one for buying that bottle of wine—she should have known she was being watched, Di.

Ah, f p dear, for one who has been so open about his love of Guinness and his recreational drugs, I find it interesting that you are so judgmental about her buying a bottle of wine.

Given that many here know your name and where you live, who’s to say you’re not being watched, too?

SG, Diana, Mel: what spin? Who ever said that diplomacy never works? Not me! The problem arises in thinking that diplomacy always work; I don’t know of anyone who thinks it never works…

Of course her release was political—Iran made its point. As will N. Korea.

Could it be Hillary and staff had a hand in helping Roxana’s release? One way or another, I’m very happy about it.

If it doesn’t breach any kind of security issue, then yes, I do want to know.  I’m happy for her and for her family.  That could not have been easy….

First I am going to say that I am thrilled this young lady is out of that jail!!!  But this concerns me… "[Saberi] accepted she had made a mistake and got access to documents she should not have. But there was no transfer of any classified information."

If she was just a reporter how could she have gotten her hands on this information?  Plus doesnt the US have citizens jailed in other countries and nothing is being done to release them?
