In a surprise move, Dr. Sanjay Gupta today graciously withdrew his name as President Barack Obama’s Surgeon General nominee.
According to a press statement, Gupta wants to focus all of his energies on his reporting gig over at CNN. Gupta’s the latest Obama pick to pull his name out of the running, after Bill Richardson, Judd Gregg, Nancy Killefer and Tom Daschle.
Gupta will appear on "Larry King Live" tonight to discuss his decision.

This should most certainly and most deservedly open the door for Dr. Howard Dean, whom I always felt would be the best possible choice for HHS, and even FDA would be a large enough and challenging enough job for this great American. Here are two of my articles on Howard Dean for HHS:

Please take the time to email both President Obama and VP Biden in support of Dr. Dean as Surgeon General; I believe the very future of American Health and Illness Prevention is at stake, given the corporate onslaught into the regulatory processes we are supposed to trust and depend on; I welcome your insights and ideas! Who else would you trust for designing a complete overhaul of the FDA, the Department of Health, and the Surgeon General’s functions more than Dr. Howard Dean?
Thank You!

Howard Dean? I had not even thought of him in this roll and completely forgot he is indeed a physician.
I’m with you Stephen and will definitely do my part in urging our President to select Howard Dean.
No, not Howard Dean. I think the world of him but not for Surgeon General. Surgeon General is a public health job and Dean is into public policy. You don’t get to make public policy as Surgeon General. Besides, he’s just started a consulting gig, he’s signed up with a speaker’s bureau and has a bunch of other irons in the fire that I doubt he’d want to leave to take the Surgeon General job.
Gupta loves being on-air and famous and making big bucks. His CNN stint allows him all that. In the administration, he’d be fighting for air-time.
Being on Larry King allows him to boost Larry’s ratings even more and not be bothered with embarrassing questions.
No one wants to go down with a sinking ship and have their name associated with it. Geithner’s selection for Deputy to the Treasury Secretary, Annette Nazareth, also withdrew.
Why? They are running out of people to man the Good Ship Lollipop.
