Sen. Wyden: Congress Should've Listened to Me on Bailout Bonuses

Sen. Ron Wyden has something to tell Congress: "I told you so."
The Democrat insists this week that the AIG bonus scandal could have been prevented had lawmakers listened to him and Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe. Their stimulus measure would have capped bailout bonuses at $100,000, and would have included taxes on bonuses that exceeded the cap.
"Not a single United States senator was willing in broad daylight to stand up and oppose our bipartisan amendment … but it died in conference," Wyden told the Huffington Post. It "would have been a very strong disincentive to anybody paying out bonuses in the future."
So, now that AIG is trying to distribute $165 million in bonuses, Snowe and Wyden are trying again. This time, their bill will cap bonuses at $25,000 for all TARP recipients and other bailed-out companies. (AIG has received $170 billion in taxpayer aid in all.) Any amount over $25,000 doled out would be taxed at 35 percent.
Taxing taxpayer-funded bonuses seems to be a popular idea this week. At least three bills introduced in the House aim to put an excise tax of 95 percent to 100 percent on the $165 million in AIG bonuses, paid out to the same financial-products unit that got the insurance giant in trouble in the first place. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-MT, also wants to put big excise taxes on bailout-bucks bonuses.
AIG CEO Edward Liddy will face a firing squad about the bonuses today when he testifies before the House Financial Services Committee at 10 AM. His company argued that bonuses need to be offered to keep and motivate the best and the brightest — especially those trying to get the companies back on their feet. But, The Washington Post reports, the frenzy is also threatening federal efforts to attract private investors to economic recovery programs.
Said Lynn Tilton, CEO of Patriarch Capital: "Am I afraid of the populist outrage? Yes."

Obama Received a $101,332 Bonus from AIG
Senator Barack Obama received a $101,332 bonus from American International Group in the form of political contributions according to Opensecrets.org. The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are - Senators Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama.
The A.I.G. Financial Products affiliate of A.I.G. gave out $136,928, the most of any AIG affiliate, in the 2008 cycle. I would note that A.I.G.’s financial products division is the unit that wrote trillions of dollars’ worth of credit-default swaps and "misjudged" the risk.
The Washington Post reports a "mob effect" at A.I.G financial products division:
With the anger and rage that is being exhibited against A.I.G., perhaps the bonuses Obama received from A.I.G. explain Obama’s A.I.G crocodile tears.
Now that the Wall street Journal has revealed that A.I.G. paid bonuses of $1 million or more to 73 employees, it’s time to ask if recipients of A.I.G."bonuses," including President Obama, will give what now ought to be taxpayer money back?

AIG lobbyists favored republicans over the democrats, McCain and his campaign were the top recipients.

OBAMA SIGNS BOOK DEAL 5 DAYS BEFORE TAKING OFFICE. Libra, perhaps President Obama can give his $500,000 advance for his book deal to pay down the debt he has created for his special interest groups!
Libra, honestly, signing a book deal five days before being sworn in? What is up with Barry? The article will go on to say that they "think" he’ll give the proceeds to charity but who follows up on that? Supposedly the book will be for "inner city" children and will be put in the schools.
He seems to be a legend in his own mind.
What is most interesting in all of this, is that Senator Chris Dodd, author of the Dodd Amendment was instrumental in killing this cap in Committee. The same Dodd who received the MOST in campaign fund contributions from…TADA…AIG!!! Number two on the Senate list of top AIG campaign coffer recipients…Senator Barrack Obama.
BonusGate anyone?
