Should marijuana or prostitution be legalized?

In the case of marijuana, you would deal a significant blow to the drug traffickers.  Government go to such extremes trying to find a way to thwart the cartels, when the simplest, swiftest way is to pull the rug out from under them, and then regulate and tax the product.  Everybody wins!

In the case of prostitution, again you then can have regulatory control.  Collect fees for licenses that must be renewed every three months with a health certificate.  If you were a john would you choose a licensed or unlicensed hooker when you can be more sure about the safety of one over the other?

Follow the model of The Netherlands with regard to both.  They don’t seem to have any significant fallout from the pot or the brothels.  When it’s legal and regulated, you can more easily confine the operations so those who are opposed to either can more easily avoid exposure.  I don’t understand the problem.

Nancy, would have responded a bit sooner, but lol… just burned a joint! I have Gastroposiris, and as well as diabetes, central nerveous system totaled by uncontrolled diabetes, along with  being abused mentally and physically during childhood.I can only survive with marijuana, as I stay very sick at my stomach, even when empty… just vomit vile, you know what I am speaking of I am sure. As well, I have NO appetite! Pot helps with that, as I have to take insulin shots as well as pills, and am on 13 medications at this time., diabetic’s have to eat, in order for the insulin to work correctly.I agree that marijuana can effect your alertness, and depth perception, so yes…. don’t drive or use heavy machinery when HIGH?

For the topic of prostitution, I have no comment as for I know nothing for facts about it, and have  been married for last 34 years .I think that when those folks now in the US, ages 66-86, men and women, are no longer living, and those ages 53-76 now are their age, POT will be totally legal, and mabey before then, if we can get past those uninformed older folks? And look now the lady is the one going after MEN more than the men are, for they just set back and take their choice for a spur of the moment fling in the hay! No attachments, bam just free sex! So why prostitution? It’s free to ALL!!

Neither should be legalized and in my opinion. Our focus nationally should be toward understanding and changing the mindset of so many who WANT and DESIRE both.

What is it about drug use that so many desire in their lives? Why must getting high be something we as a society feel compelled to accept? And prostitution is just pathetic in my opinion. Women who feel they must sell themselves for their sex and men who feel they must pay for it are pathetic figures in my mind.

I would never be attracted to a man that had to pay for sex. He would be considered flawed and not worthy of me.

Do we really need to change the minds of people wanting these or do we simply need to ask them, "Why?".  When you discover the mindsets of these people, you may discover that they are very reasonable people who have different experience in a society with declining morality and increased blurring of the lines between what is considered right and wrong. Even if you discover the mindset of a few men who use the services of prostitutes, you may find that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone and isn’t ready for a serious committed relationship. To me that’s better than conning and manipulating and lying in order to get a basic need met.

Ask, "Why?" all the time, Belinda but don’t focus on the individual look at the big picture.

Oh Susan, but I do look at the big picture and that is why I feel as I do.

You brought up the very reason I am against prostitution. You said, its better than conning and manipulating and lying in order to get a basic need met. That is my point. Why must men and women lie to one another to have their sexual needs met? They don’t.

The reality is and one I don’t believe the masses understand, there are countless websites where men and women hook up just for sex. Phone sex lines that advertise nightly all across the U.S. to meet and have sex with same and opposite sex. You can meet someone in a bar, restaurant, night club and yes….a church for sex. You don’t have to promise to call, meet again and pretend it will lead to anything. I would not utilize any of these options because I can’t have sex with someone I’m not in love with, but I do understand desires and the need to have them fulfilled. I just find it sick to have to pay someone for it.

As for people who want to get high, nothing anyone can say on this subject will change my mind. But here is the BIG CONTRADICTION for me. I support and lend my voice to Mothers Against Drunk Driving MADD, and can appreciate the affects of alcohol consumption. Yet how many times do we hear about people killing people on the roads because they were high on weed?

The only way you’ll get my caffeine is when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Why do people use drugs?  Because they feel good.  It’s the same reason people have sex, climb mountains, run marathons and play video games.  Why should society state that some ways to feel good are acceptable and others aren’t?  In my opinion, the only time society should have a say is when the "feel good" action is inherently dangerous to other people who are not participating in the "feel good" action.  So, while there are some drugs that a person can not use without being a danger to other people, weed is not one of them.

As for "pathetic" people who pay for sex, I have a lot of sympathy for them.  Human beings need touch.  We are also happier (in general) if we are getting sex.  However, there are a number of people out there who can not enter a relationship.  Generally they aren’t charismatic or attractive and probably wouldn’t be the sort of person many of us would be attracted to.  But, they didn’t really ask to be that way.  For instance, one of my friends is approaching his 40th birthday.  He hasn’t had a date since he was 25.  The last time he had sex he wasn’t able to drink legally….  He’s a good guy though a bit boring and with a face only a mother could love.  The fact that he sees his life just extending celibate to his death depresses him completely.  Does he deserve this?  Now, we can acknowledge that paying for a prostitute is not the same as being in a relationship.  But, sometimes people such as my friend need just a little bit to help them not act needy and desperate when out with other people.  Because, if there is anything less attractive than a boring personality and an ugly face, it’s an air of desperation.

I think prostitution should be legal.  It has always seemed strange to me that I can have sex with someone, and I can demand that a person pay me for my time if I work for them, but I can not combine the two.  Granted, I don’t have any interest in it as I’d rather be paid as a physicist.  But, I can certainly see why someone might decide to go down that route and legalization will only make it safer for all involved.

RJB, take a look at the results from this poll. More people agree with you than they do me. And on this subject and a hosts of others, I assure you my mindset on what "should be" will always be in the minority because my morals, values and ideology on love, sex, drug use, teens, porn, etc. etc. etc. is conservative.

But it works for me and I am not Queen of the world. So you and everyone else who thinks as you do can continue to believe smoking weed should be legal, and paying for sex is a victimless event. I will, along with the small number who think as I do go on with life wishing those like you didn’t have your mindset, but accept the fact we’re powerless in changing it.

I’m with you, Belinda. Certain things are extremely destructive to society as a whole, and I lump those two in there.

Well this poll should stir up some talk. Yes, legalize both. There will always be prostitution, so get it out in thopen where it can be monitored and taxed. Same for Marijuana.  So many people smoke it and are losing a lot of tax monies. And if you don’t want legalized pot, bann alchohol. That has been the cause of many problems. Pot couldn’t be worse.

Yes, legalize both………….and tax them.  They are both alive and well; flourishing.  Our government could be the pimps and their masks would be off at last.

Andy, legalized prostitition works very well in Nevada. Its regulated, and no one pimp is there to take the girls money, beat them when they wish and even kill them. We spend big bucks in every state hunting down pot sellers and users and over pack our jails with people who mostly hurt no one. The so called war on drugs has now lasted over 30 years and we are not winning. I do not approve of hard drugs, but, pot is as harmless as booze. Have you ever seen ladies of the night on the streets? All I have is sympathy for anyone who thinks this is their only way to survive. Every one of them was once someone’s daughter and I can not believe they dreamed this is how their lives would be. If you ar a practicing Christian, where do you think you would find Jesus walking today. Rodeo Drive? Wall Street?. I am not a believer in organized religion, but that good man had wonderful ideas. And he lived and died for them.

I know I sounded flip, it was not my intention.  I do believe they should both be legalized, taxed and further contolled…in the case of prostitution:  with health measures.  As well, marijuana is supposed to help with the reaction to chemotherapy; certainly at least those who are suffering the after-affects of chemo should be allowed some relief.

Sorry if I took you wrong Andy. Flat printed words do no always convey intent or meaning. I agree with you. I do not smoke pot but have tried it. It only made me sleepy. I rather have a drink. I would not become a prostitute, but I would rather see it practiced as they do in Nevada. Human beings are just that, and most European countries recognize this fact and take a level headed approach to both these aspects of human nature.

Speaking from experience, marijuana does help relieve the nausea of chemotherapy.  I think legalization will not solve the health issues that marijuana causes down the road from constant use.  Some of the chemicals in it are toxic and will it be another area that raises taxes in order to pay for those who decided to use instead of live clean?
