Absolutely legalize both. Marijuana is no where near as "narcotic" as Oxycodone or even alcohol for that matter and why should Wall Street and the government be the only ones allowed to legally screw the public.
There is always going to be weed smokers and there are always going to be those solicit prostitutes. Legalize them so that they can be taxed. I think that the revenue could be put to good use.
Let go of the Puritan past..legalize both and tax the hell out of them…Men will always go to the red lights if they want that kind of contact, and pot smokers will contrinue to do the same in thier milieu. We, in this country, have other issues that demand more attention…hunger, obesity, education( or lack of it). Move on folks, we have work to do!!
absolutely legalize regulate and tax both. I have very strong feelings about both of these. And i’m not a pot smoker! It’s just absolutely ludicrous to spend money the way we do on policing these two things. One of which is no more harmful by any means than alcohol or benzodiazepines for cryin out loud. And one of which wouldn’t be dangerous at all if it were regulated, if these women were provided health and security protections. not to mention we’d be putting taxes IN our coffers as opposed to spending taxes… it’s just stupid stupid stupid that they are not legal.
The effects of marijuana are no worse than the effects of alcohol, and alcohol is perfectly legal. Legalize it, tax it, and set an age limit on it just like we do with alcohol.
If a person fucks random strangers for free, it’s perfectly legal, but if they pay for it, it’s a crime. That makes no sense. Prostitution should be treated the same as any other form of self-employment.
What a surprise to find every one so far, except for Belinda, in favor of legalizing both and looking at it very openly and sensibly. I agree, but I feel for Belinda who would like to change the mindsets of those that do indulge in both practices. She asks why people want to get high and she views paying for sex pathetic. From time in memorial there has been prostitution and probably always will be as long as men need that kind of liaison and women are willing to provide it. Whether one approves of it or not is a moot point, how we as a society can prosper from it is what’s on the table. As far as Mary Jane and its many lovers of, getting high feels good just like any substance that puts you in a state that feels good. Again, since it is not going away and it’s here to stay we might as well tax it and profit. The above poster says we have more pressing issues that need our attention and I agree. And so to Belinda I’d like to say: accepting the foibles of others and dealing with the reality of the situation might be difficult, but it’s like trying to put a lid on anything that’s not going to change. Too bad the scenario isn’t more like "Pretty Woman" and "The Big Chill."
When they think of prostitution, many people think of some pathetic hooker working the ghetto . But we all know from Client # 9 ‘s folly that prostitution is very big business. Whether we approve or not is beside the point. That business is impossible to contain. Legalize it for sure and tax the hey out of it.
During the carefree university years, my friends and I occasionally indulged in marijuana when we actually had enough money to pool to buy it. It made us silly, mellow, hungry, and sleepy. None of us were inspired to take stronger drugs. We all graduated and landed good jobs. Today we don’t exhibit erratic behaviors, although some husbands would love to debate that.Legalize/tax marijuana ,too.
"When they think of prostitution, many people think of some pathetic hooker working the ghetto"…Maggie sorry for me that is not true. I think of prostitution as having sex with multiple men/women several times a day! That for me is just gross. I mean yes you can shower in between but to turn around and do it over and over all day - sorry. If some can, more power to them but its not something I would like to see my daughter or any of my family or friends doing as a profession - no matter how rich it will make them. You go right on ahead- I wont stop you!
C Hardy, this is not about approval. It’s not about getting rich. A street corner hooker does turn trick after trick for little or no money, day after day. Yes, of course, that is gross. They do not get rich; they survive and barely. It’s a horrific life. Police arrest them , jail them, and within hours they are back on their corner. But high priced call girls make hundreds of dollars for just a few hours " work". Whether you or I approve of that life style is beside the point. They prefer that lifestyle over sitting behind a secretary’s desk or being a nurse or teacher or CPA or any other professional career. That is not going to change.
" You go right on ahead- I wont stop you! " I don’t know what you mean by that. Rather odd.
C Hardy: Why would you be personalizing prostitution? None here are saying we are considering it, that we would want our daughters or sons or husbands to engage in this practice. We are discussing whether it should be legalized in order to get taxes. So your "You go right ahead–-I won’t stop you!" is directed at Maggie? Why?
Phyllis - b/c your saying it should be legal - that means someone’s daughter or son would be in that line of work - you dont want it for your family YET its ok for somone else to do it…which is why I said "go right ahead, i wont stop you or anyone else who wants to promote such a lifestyle.
