I’ve noticed that a lot of the posts regarding legalization of prostitution are revolving around the poster’s individual preference. "I would’t do that", or "wouldn’t want my child doing that", or even "I’ve never done that". Well, all right, no one’s telling anyone that the law is going to make it mandatory that everyone is going to have to become a prostitute.
Here’s a thought: In Texas, laws have allowed the teaching of Bible classes in public schools. These are supposed to be instructional classes that will explain Christian origins, beliefs and the Bible (which version, I wonder) to students. They are not classes in theology, or in the world’s "major religions", nor am I aware of any balancing classes dealing exclusively in any other religion, such as Islam, or Judaism. They are not supposed to be opinion-based, or evangelical in nature, but I am extremely dubious about the availability of non-biased, Christian instructors (most Christians strongly support their given denomination), much less well-educated, non-Christian theologians to teach these classes. And here’s the thing. I, personally, object very strongly to such classes being taught in our public schools. I doubt that they will be taught objectively, and that there will be no proselytizing.I don’t believe that religion has any place in the public schools, unless it is at the high school level, is taught completely comprehensively (which would mean touching on certain popular "fringe" [absolutely no offense meant to Santarians and Wiccans, etc.] faiths, agnosticism and atheism) and with an emphasis on tolerance. Fortunately, creationism and "intelligent design" have both been kept out of public school, and the Bible classes are not mandatory, so at this time, it is a matter of choice.
If you are asking what this has to do with the legalization of prostitution, let me simplify. If prostitution is legalized, no one need use the services of a prostitute, or become a prostitute, who does not wish to do so, especially if you find the practice disturbing, immoral, "sinful" or personally distasteful. How does this relate to religious issues in public schools? As of right now, I do not have to send my children to private institutions in which Christian dogma and the Bible are taught as truths. I am not required to send my children to blatantly Christian classes in public school. I do not wish to do these things, because I find religious dogmatic teachings offensive, repulsive and repressive, plus personally distasteful. Much as some of you would hate for your child to become a prostitute, I would be very disturbed if my child became an evangelical fundamentalist preacher. It’s all a matter of personal choice.
We tend to protect our priests, ministers, parsons, and preachers, even when they prove to be simply vile, dishonest and totally reprehensible people under the guise of paragons of righteousness and good. Why not protect women (and men) who are protending to no such thing, and allow them to be honest when they are simply doing a job, providing a service, and trying to make a living?
I don’t see how dating situations are unduly different from prostitution, in that when a man pays for a nice meal for a woman, it is expected that he will be rewarded later with sex. How is it fundamentally different from paying someone for sex? Do people actually believe that adding a superficial ritual of a nice meal or event beforehand changes the meaning and intent of the interaction, which is sex? Rather than legitimizing sex via a charade, why not legalize the concept of consensual sex (dropping the pejorative term "prostitution") between consenting adults?
Low self esteem and other psychological issues. What intelligent healthy person would have sex with strangers? What intelligent thinking person would place their life in jeopardy entering a room with strangers? Is money more important than ones life? In street terms, it’s NASTY!
I am so tired of hearing "marijuana is a gateway drug"….guess what? ALCHOHOL is THE gateway drug. If either of the two should be illegal, it should be the booze. And for the lady that said her friends had a hard time getting off of the weed, no offense…but it’s harder to get off of freaking CAFFEINE than it is the other. And for the people who did "research" and found negative results? http://www.webmd.com/cancer/news/20040815/marijuana-stall-brain-tumor-growth
Here are a few articles for you…I’m looking for the one that talks about how the government, yes the GOVERNMENT had a study done a few decades ago where they discovered that marijuana actually inhibited cancer cell growth…did you people get that? They squashed it because that wasn’t the result they wanted. Look for yourselves. I kid you not. It disgust me as an american to know that the people we elected are witholding information (big surprise there) because it doesn’t fit it in with THEIR ideology. (Kind of like not teaching about birth control in sex-ed…) No wonder the guy in the UK got fired…he spoke the truth. Truth doesn’t seem to mesh with what the government wants.

both should be legalized, controlled, regulated and taxed
that would put a lot of nasty people out of business
