Should the U.S. be more involved in the election aftermath in Iran?

Well, we would not have wanted Iranians coming to the US to tell us how wrong Bush v. Gore was in 2000.  So why not consider the golden rule in international politics?  The President has said plainly what is and should be the U.S. position.

But I do think it was good for the State department to ask Twitter to remain available for Iranians to communicate.

Obama is approaching this situation correctly.  He has told the Iranian government that the world is watching and to stop the violence against its own people.. This is an internal matter in Iran. They need to solve it themselves.  If they want our help they will ask for it. I’ve spent hours on Twitter reading the messages coming out of the country and they are horrifying but they also show the courage of a people fighting for their own destiny.  No matter how this ends we need to remember that Iran will not be a Western style democracy.  Like much of the Middle East they are tribal, our ways don’t work for them.  What they do want is a say in how their country is run and for their votes to count.  The days of the US and/or its allies charging in on a white horse are over.  To be honest if Iran didn’t have a boat load of oil the situation would be ignored much like what happened in Hungary in 1956 when Soviet tanks rolled into the country and crushed a revolt.  The people begged for help but the world couldn’t have cared less.   Much as people posture about freedom its all about the oil -shamefully.

We need to remember, that the bush adminastration tried very hard to start a war with Iran. We also need to remember the past relationship between us and Iran as well as Iraq!

We need there oil, and they and the world knows it.

Interfering with Iran now would be an act of war to Russia who needs there oil.

Our world is closer now to a nucular war then it ever has been. We could use one however to cut down the population. But it would be close to our extintion.

So the question should be, are you willing to die for it?

Willing to die for what, Mark?

The oil or our country?

No oil  and oil only.  That’s what our mis-east policy has been for for decades.

Actually, Mark, Russia is an oil exporter. They have long been close to and supportive of Iran, and are usually the weak link in trying to impose economic sanctions. Would they consider our interfering in Iran an act of war against Russia? Not Likely. Would Russia react? Absolutely. Probably in Georgia, at this time.

Dear SR…the dog ate my homework….Glad you’re paying attention…how’s the punster, JG?

Hi, Georgia, good to hear from you again. Always like to see your posts. You’re not the only one with missing homework. The CIA Factbook is only as current as 2007 on the matter. I find it interesting that while Iran exports oil, they import gasoline. They lack sufficient refining capacity, for now.

Punster JG is as tall as his father, turning 18 this year, and may have outgrown the puns. I do not think he ever got the attention he needed at home, and gave up trying. 100% home schooled, and taught to believe that the Earth was formed cold. I have no idea how they explain the little things like lava, geysers, hot springs, earthquakes, or oil. His introduction to the real world should be…interesting.

Dear SR…..tough being avuncular, isn’t it? And is there a corresponding word for aunties? Not to be confused with ante up….. Encourage him to sign on as a front man for the Palin trip….it’s gonna be a fabulous ride on MSM. And then when he comes back/home…four, eight, twelve years from now, you get to remind him, ever so kindly, did you not learn the story at your home-schoolers knee,…. about the prodigal son? Hate the sin, love the sinner……….I’m gonna get nailed for this one, too……I give it five hours cyber shelf life……even in the "waybacks"…..dare not to go off thread…knit one, purl two………….

While I’m at it…….one doesn’t "outgrow" puns…..we grow into them..(trust me on this)..It at least takes a smarty-pants four-year old who has listened to a happy/silly (and literate would be good) bunch of tall people talking..It takes a canon..(one "N") to get to punning…..

Got no bidniss pushing a loose cannon…… "We" (define at will) don’t get to talk anymore……c’est domage..’tis a pity

"Shame, it’s a shame, it’s a cryin’ shame…"

What the U.S. needs to do is to make sure we know. That’s all we can do for now. The media needs to make sure this stays on TV for all the world to see.

On healthcare I fear Obama will shaft us. On Iran he is doing exactly the right thing.   The Iran situation has to be handled with care and restraint. Considering our ugly behavior of 30 years ago in Iran and it’s outcome [what we see now], it is that meddling usually backfires. Especially in a volatile situation where we have no credibility. The young people in Iran know we are for them. But Iran must make its own destiny. For the moment, at least.
