Should violence against medical doctors who perform abortions be viewed and prosecuted as domestic terrorism?
The recent murder of Dr. George Tiller has revived the conversation about anti-abortion violence. Click here to read more about the topic on PBS.org/Now.

To compare Christians to the Taliban is irresponsible and you must not be familiar with what the Taliban does, in particular to women to believe such nonsense. You wouldn’t last a day under such a regime. Like I said, when was the last time a women was "stoned to death" by Christians. This apparent lack of perspective is what is wrong with the left today. There is no moral equivalence between the two.
i disagree. someone was murdered for their profession just now, someone who has been stalked for almost 30 years based on his beliefs and his profession.
sounds like something the taliban would do - kill those who disagree.
the comparison is perfect.
It is a hate crime as well. Hate against women. Think of the women who are in dire straits — maybe they have discovered in their sixth month of pregnancy that they have cancer — who will no longer be able to find a doctor to perform the procedure that may save their lives. There was a woman who discovered that her fetus was developing without a brain and would be stillborn and opted for a late term abortion instead of suffering through three more months of futile pregnancy. I just don’t think these "pro-life" people realize that they are trying to turn over to government decisions that are complicated, personal and agonizing, and that they would not do that with any of their own most difficult decisions. Some things should be worked out by the woman and her doctor.
Anyway, a person who kills a doctor for doctoring kills more than the doctor. George Tiller was a hero to the women he helped.
I do not believe in late term abortions. However, the case you mentioned was clearly futile and health related! … I am opposed to the murder of long term healthy babies!
late term abortions are illegal unless it is because of the health of the mother, or because the child has horrible medical conditions.
educate yourself - abortions of healthy babies older than 6 months gestation are ILLEGAL.
that is the exact problem. people need to stay out of other peoples’ medical decisions. leave other people alone. if you care about babies, use your time, effort, energy and money to help babies and children and mothers and families who are already here, and are struggling with bills, medical issues, and emotional problems.
and the "pro-lifers" dont care at all.
The man who methodically planned and carried out the murder of Dr. Tiller has been charged with First Degree Murder. A capital offense. Why is the murder, politically charged, of this man more offensive than a woman killed in a ‘crime of passion’ (is that a hate crime as well?) Or a teller shot in a bank robbery (would that be a murder perpetrated by the economy?)…it sort of spins out of control as we caveat the motivations of all criminals. Pre-meditated murder, be it politically charged or a love affair gone wrong, is pre-meditated murder.
Murder and capital crimes have been ‘dealt’ with by our existing criminal justice system. Weighing some crimes as more egregious tips the balance of all criminal justice. First Degree Murder is the charge. Period.
I find the bandying about of the term ‘terrorism’ most interesting. Didn’t Janet Napalitano ‘remove’ ‘terrorism/ist’ from the lexicon? Aren’t they now (the rediculous) ‘man-made disasterists?’
Convenience stores get robbed all the time. Should convenience store clerks who have been robbed (and moved onto to another job—not wanting to encounter another robber) also be a special protected class? What about bank tellers…they also get robbed, shot…and many leave that profession. Are those who have been unfortunate enough to be in a work related crime situation now all victims of terror as well? What about cops that get killed in the line of duty? Does that deter other men and women from being police officers because they are now ‘terrorized?’
Dr. Tiller was killed by a man who planned and orchestrated a capital offense. He will be tried and hopefully convicted. Hate crime terminology and now the ‘domestic terrorist’ lables are side shows…and no doubt venues for appeals, mistrials, hung juries…and guilty who will walk. Why muddy the waters…when the ‘hate’ ‘terror’ bar is seemingly harder to prove than…’his prints were on the gun.’ Why not stick to the facts pertaining to a case at hand; have the trial based upon those facts; and hopefully justice prevails and the guilty (like the shooter of Dr. Tiller) get their punishment. The rest of this is PC gibberish that criminal defense lawyers will find ‘handy.’
because the people want money - not because they hate convenience stores or their clerks.
once again - banks are robbed because the people want money - not because they hate banks or their clerks.
