Sinking Dollar Fair Warning to Obama, by Liz Peek

Image: WhiteHouse.gov

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 10/5)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist.

The New York Times ran a story this week about the art that the Obamas have chosen for the walls of the White House. Featured in the piece was a painting by Ed Ruscha. The chosen canvas has a red background with the words "wait a minute," "maybe yes" and "maybe no" floating across the space. What an appropriate choice for our young president, who is suddenly irresolute about Afghanistan. Having once pronounced Kabul as central to the war on terror (oops! make that the Overseas Contingency Operation), the president is now angling for a Goldilocks position: not too little, not too much, responding to polls that show waning support for our activities in that desperate country.

President Obama is uncertain not only about our military options, but also – dangerously – about economic choices. He recently affirmed while addressing a Wall Street crowd that "I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of the free market." That was good to hear, because almost none of his proposed programs suggest a love affair with capitalism. Instead, he has offered up one measure after another that substitutes government fiat for market economics – most notably in autos, health care and energy. The newest entry is the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency whose czar will be empowered to decide on "the manner, settings and circumstances for the provision of any consumer financial products or services." Moreover, he has revved up his antitrust department, sanctioned pro-labor policies burdensome to American employers and started a trade war.

This litany of business-unfriendly stances is taking a toll, not only on the president’s popularity, but on the dollar. The dollar took a sizeable hit this week (and gold soared) when the Australians boosted their key interest rate, signaling a recovery in that country. While earlier this year global investors drove the dollar briefly higher in their quest for safety, they have since had second thoughts. The euro, for instance, has gained 18% in value compared to the dollar since March. You don’t have to read the tea leaves to find reasons to sell the dollar – you can simply delve into the budget projections.

To put things in perspective, note that budget deficits in the U.K. are about to sink the Labour Government. The IMF puts the U.K. budget deficit this year at 11.6% of GDP and at 13.2% next year. The net public debt of Great Britain is expected to amount to 92% of GDP in 2014, up from 58% today and 38%in 2007. (The Obamacare folks should note that the IMF has called for the U.K. to rein in their health-care program, a leading budget-breaker.) The Brits are alarmed about this state of affairs, which is why they are about to junk their existing government. David Cameron, the Tory leader most likely to take over as Prime Minister, has warned that the country is in for tough times – severe cuts in social spending and higher taxes. That is not the usual campaign rhetoric, but the country is looking the future square on, and does not like what it sees.

Here’s the sobering news for the U.S.: we’re not that far behind the U.K. Our budget deficit will total 12.5% of GDP this year according to the IMF, and our national debt will soar to 85% of GDP by 2014. These figures are spurring talk that the dollar will no longer be the world’s reserve currency and that oil producers may move to price their product eventually in a basket of currencies.

Glenda Glynn, this is how Mr. T is handling the economic crisis:

Dear Mr. Obama - Mr. "T" Moves to Mexico.
Dear President Obama:

I’m planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico to look for work at one of the many U.S. companies located down there, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We’re planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and we’ll need your help to make a few arrangements.

We plan to skip all the legal requirements like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws.

I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here, so we don’t feel we need to bother with legalities.

So, would you mind telling your good friend, President Calderon, that we’re on our way over?

Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

3. All Mexican government forms should be provided in English.

4. I want my grandchildren to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.

5. Inform all schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my grandchildren to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.

7. Plan to feed my grandchildren at school for both free breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.

9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico, but, I don’t plan to purchase car insurance, or make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put U S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I expect to find our flag and favorite foods provided in grocery stores for all our cultural events. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

13. Please have the president caution all Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say a critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. If I receive any negative comments, I will complain about racism, get a lawyer and file a lawsuit. I will expect that all legal services will be provided free and my attorney will speak English.

14. I expect to receive free food stamps.

15. I expect free rent subsidies.

16. I’ll need Income Tax credits so although I don’t pay Mexican Taxes, I’ll receive money from the government.

17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Government pays $ 4,500 to help me buy a new car.

18. Please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I’ll get a monthly income at retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these nice things for all his people who cross the U.S. border from Mexico! Since you are such good friends, I am sure that President Calderon won’t mind returning the favor.

Thank you so much for your kind help. You’re the man!!! "T"

Deber,  Your post proved my point much better than I did.  You don’t need to tell someone what you have done for them.  Hypocrisy abounds- people praise the troops and but vote against bills that would improve the lives of the troops.

All countries share the same world and as such must get along.  We are sending our most precious assets, our young men an women into war.  We can not continue to do this unless it is absolutely necessary for our safety and some scheme to support economic greed.

We need not be boastful or harbor false pride while sacrificing not only   the lives of our young men and women but the lives of others around the world.

Liz Peek and others are preoccupied with failure for Obama but maybe she can keep the other side on their does and press us to educate ourselves.  We then discover she is full of bull.

Deber, please provide your sources. I too, read international newspapers and my take on their opinions would be quite different. In fact I’d like to post a couple of the most popular comments posted to a Canadian news site:

1. "A fascinating choice made by the noble committee this year. At this particular moment in American internal politics Obama is under attack by the most hateful elements of right wing America. A few short months before the appearance of that anti-Obama throng the world witnessed the rapturous inaugural throng of Americans toasting his presidential victory. But a few short weeks ago a rabid throng of Americans have portrayed their President Obama as Hitler, the anti-Christ of peace.

President Obama has shown Russia that under his administration the US will not play a reverse game of the 1960s Cuban missile crises. He has kept effective communications with China and seeks their support in dealing with North Korea. He has made it clear to the Middle East that he wants Israeli to change how it interacts with the Palestinians. Obama was hoping to have a dialogue with Iran while the leaders of that country showed the world how they were incapable of having an internal dialogue about how Iran should be governed.

Upon reflection one wonders if the American people understand the significance or the meaning of this award to their leader. The average American does not have a clue as to just how contorted, conflicted and failed the foreign polices of the Bush administration has been. The President deserves the award but sadly the rabid right of America will only scoff at it. However, congratulations to him from the thinking side of humanity.

Congratulations to President Obama. This award signals that the world has been thirsting for the leadership Obama so eloquently espouses from this side of the Atlantic." and

2. "He has consistantly called for more dialogue, and more engagement with former adversaries, he has turned the American heading on climate change, and most importantly he speaks of a nuclear weapons free world. Imagine!"

Personally, I really don’t think Americans realize (or care, perhaps) how the rest of the world sees your President and how thrilled and optimistic we are with the choice you made last November.

True T. - It’s not that we don’t realize how Obama has courted the powers that be in Russia, North Korea, Iran, et al….it’s that they are perceiving his portrayals of U.S. Policy (his policies) as weakness, and ineffectual.  They smile and nod agreement, then laugh at his naivete when the cameras stop rolling.

Other nations respect power, not pusillanimity.  They know he is inexperienced, and ineffectual, and his peace-at-any-price offerings have earned him not respect, but, in private, derision.

P.S.  True T. - you have a very contorted view of the "rabid right."  You’re watching too much of the left fringe media.  We are professional people, factory workers, mothers, secretaries, business owners, …we are people all over the country who simply believe our country is in danger of becoming something more like "fascist" than the republic it was meant to be.

We know Bush wasn’t the perfect president.  During his last couple of years in office he made some bad decisions, and probably had some bad advice.  But no one ever doubted his patriotism, or worried about outside forces doing us harm.

We certainly believe there should be cooperation between nations, but that our own problems should be the highest priority of our leaders.  After that, global concerns should be dealt with as well as possible.

What country is called on when there is serious trouble around the globe?….Russia?  China?  Venezuela?  A resounding NO!  It is the strength of the United States and its resources.  We are the most giving, charitable nation on earth, and yet, we are the most critized.  Perhaps because of our strength, most believe our coffers are bottomless.  But that is not now the case.

We have a Congress and a President who have spent the wealth of this country, and the yet-unearned wealth of our children, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.  That is why you are hearing demands from the right that this profligate spending stop!

And if we sound a bit "extreme," then so be it.  It is because we are "extremely" troubled about the actions of this administration.

Again, Callie O, you either didn’t read or didn’t comprehend my post. I am Canadian and posted comments from a Canadian news site. Similar comments are posted around the world on many international news sites.

I do not watch any "left fringe media." To say no one worried about outside forces doing us harm while Bush was your president is ridiculous in the extreme.

I’d have to say its been quite scary living next door during the Bush administration. Never knowing who Bush would piss off next and how they might retaliate; aware that we were all in jeopardy as a nuclear missile attack on the US could have wiped us out as well. In fact, former President Bush once told Canada that we had much to fear as missiles launched from North Korea toward the US could easily go astray and hit Canada instead. And there were similar fears in many countries around the world.

The Taliban now issues threats to Canada because we support America and are fighting side by side with the American troops in Afghanistan, fighting terror in our first combat mission since the second world war. Canada has provided the second largest NATO force, second only to the US. Remarkable considering our small population and requiring multiple tours from our brave men and women. To date over 130 of our best and brightest soldiers have been killed there and more including diplomats and those attempting to provide aid.

Obviously when America votes you’re voting for your own president and your own government but being the most powerful country in the world, it seems you hold the world’s future in your hands and a position of war mongering threatens us all. What difference do economic policies make when the world is at war and in danger of ultimate destruction?

Peace at any cost? Sounds pretty good to me.

Peace at any price?  NEVER!  What you are saying is let the rest of the world be enslaved under oppressive dictators, let all other peoples of the world suffer, as long as we are safe in our little haven.

That’s exactly what the left is asking for.  Run up the white flag!  Surrender!  Our forefathers would hang their heads low at this kind of thinking by Americans.

Do you really think you are safe if we do nothing?  North Korea continues to move toward nuclear arms, and the Taliban continues to work toward obtaining Pakistan’s nuclear arms.

Would you REALLY feel safe if the United States were totally disarmed?

By Xiulan Li on 10/13/2009 11:16 am “Peace at any price?  NEVER!  What you are saying is …”

Please, do NOT think you can speak for me. I was clearly talking about the world’s future and not my own little haven and I don’t know how you define world peace but any definition I’ve seen does not include oppressive dictators, slavery, and suffering for all people of the world.

Nowhere in my posts did I advocate doing nothing. Canada actively supports the Six Party Talks and has, in additional ways, been working with the US and other countries to deal with the very real threat posed by North Korea. And as I’ve already mentioned Canada is fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan side by side with the US.

I also didn’t mention surrender or the total disarmament of the US.

I do however believe that engaging the nations of the world to work toward peace will ultimately be more productive for all of us than war.

Very well stated, Xiulan Li…I hazard to say that the US strength is what has kept Canada from being threatened for many years.  Sorry, Canada if this is now spilling over to you.  You have been able to let the US be the military power-house of North America and therefore not had to have a huge military.  Do you not understand that nuclear arms development in the ME and N Korea threatens us all and has nothing to do with what the US does or doesn’t do?

Perhaps you misread my post. Please try again.

If you think a position of peace-at-any-price is earning derision around the world, you are uninformed and sorely mistaken.

Callie O, here we go again with Obama’s "bandaid surgery" which will cost the taxpayers 13 billion!!!   He loves spending our money and nothing is working!!!!

"President Obama on Wednesday attempted to preempt the announcement that Social Security recipients will not get an increase in their benefit checks for the first time in three decades, encouraging Congress to provide a one-time payment of $250 to help seniors and disabled Americans weather the recession."

Deber - And this is just the beginning of seniors’ troubles.  If this budget-busting, deficit-inflating, natoinal debt escalating health bill passes, the first $400 billion (at least) comes right out of Medicare services.  And have you seen what the bill will do to families with autistic kids?  Not good.  The story on it is just breaking, so will research and post info later.

As for the $250 one time payment?  Not enough benefit to warrant the paperwork.

It’s like throwing a doggie a bone….yet another ineffective attempt to throw something at the economic situation.   Why doesn’t Obama do something to create jobs?   Like addressing the small businesses?   Why is he not recognizing and validating the largest employer of jobs in our country?   Is it because he really doesn’t intend to create jobs….and continue on his path to put America in her place?    This is a different kind of transparency…..and it’s ugly.
