Sonia Sotomayor Tours Senate on Crutches, Gets Autographs

And Anita Hill — who helped women across the U.S. stand up to sexual harassment during Clarence Thomas’s confirmation hearings — gives kudos to fellow Yale grad.

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was in such a rush to get to Washington for her next round of meetings with senators who will eventually vote on her nomination, that she took a spill and broke some bones!

Bronx-born Sotomayor broke her ankle at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, but still made her appointments, albeit on crutches! She even got some of the Senate’s most popular names and faces to sign her cast — including Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-LA, and Sen. David Vitter, R-LA, who joked they could use ice for her leg to make "hurricane cocktails."

Meanwhile, Sotomayor is getting some more praise from another well-known woman in Supreme Court circles — Anita Hill. Hill was the woman who lodged sexual harassment claims against Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas when he was going through his own Senate confirmation hearings in 1991. Hill and Sotomayor were classmates at Yale Law School, and in an interview with Essence.com, Hill called Sotomayor an "excellent choice." She also defended Sotomayor’s "Latina" comment that has landed her in hot water with some conservatives.

Hill said:

She has acknowledged that as part of her identity, in a way that I think is very responsible and wise. She has said, ‘This is the perspective that I come from.’ But she has also said, ‘I understand that perspective, but I try not to allow that to lend itself to bias.’ I like that kind of embracing of one’s own identity, but also self-reflection.
