Maria Belen Chapur, Mark Sanford | 06/29/2009 10:45 am

Mark Sanford's Mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, Says Little About Affair; Wife Called a Hero

Chapur says she has idea who leaked affair-related e-mail messages to the press; friends say Sanford’s wife, credited with much of his political success, is no victim.

Maria Belen Chapur admitted over the weekend that she had a steamy affair with South Carolina governor and formerly rising GOP star Mark Sanford, but she’s saying little else on the scandal.

The 41-year-old Argentine woman also said she has a "firm suspicion" of who broke into her Hotmail account, where e-mail messages were housed containing details about her affair, reports The New York Times. But she doesn’t think the hacker is an ex-boyfriend. Whoever the culprit is, he or she broke into her e-mail around November 24, and, the following month, sent the e-mail messages to her ex and The State newspaper in Columbia, SC.

"I won’t speak about my private life as it just belongs to me,” Chapur said in a statement. "It has already been made too public during these last days, bringing to me even more pain."

Meanwhile, wife Jenny Sanford — the woman who is credited for many of her husband’s successes — is being heralded a hero by those who know her. She’s no victim. She kicked Sanford out of the family home, and says her No. 1 priority is her family, not her husband’s political career. She recently said she knew her husband has been cheating on her since January when she found a love letter, and that he had the gall to ask her if it was OK for him to visit his mistress. The Washington Post says Mrs. Sanford, 46, "seems to have drawn a new path for the aggrieved spouse of a philandering politician, an episode that has become something of a ritual in American politics."

Cyndi Mosteller, a longtime friend and prominent Republican operative in South Carolina, told the Post:

Jenny is the hero in this story. She’s the hero to her children, and I think she’s the hero to this state. In the midst of this tragedy, she is standing strong to who she is and what she believes in … I think Jenny has not had these types of ambitions, but I think every woman in South Carolina would vote for Jenny Sanford for governor right now.

Jenny Sanford certainly isn’t the first wife of a prominent politician to have her family turned upside down because of a sex scandal. Hillary Clinton endured Bill’s Oval Office antics; Dina Matos McGreevey had to deal with her New Jersey governor husband Jim McGreevey’s public outing as a gay man; Silda Spitzer was mortified to find out her husband, then-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, was spending time with prostitutes; and Elizabeth Edwards not only had to deal with her husband’s extramarital activities, but the possibility that he fathered a child with another woman, on top of it all.

What do you think Jenny Sanford should do? Should she forgive her husband or kick him to the curb for good?

He needs to resign—immediately—he broke the law for one thing by not telling his Lieutenant Governor and investing him with emergency powers as called for by So. Carolina law. Jenny Sanford will make the right decision for herself and her sons—frankly she ought to take the SOB for everything he’s worth while divorcing his sorry ass.

Make no mistake about it…he is an enormous ass.

However, the stand that he in some way "broke the law" is ridiculous. They were on break and the state was not left unprotected.

Seeing as how the wife admittedly "knew about the affair" since Jan., she should have drawn the line then. But…who knows what goes on behind closed doors…

Kick the bum to the curb….and run for office herself…..

He needs to be kicked royally to the curb and I believe she has done that, at least, mentally.   I do think he needs to resign.  LOL I thought Bill Clinton should’ve been impeached for lying!!!

F P who really cares about who’s screwing who.  If they do their job right that’s all that matters.  If how ever he is using tax payers money to go visit his girlfriend then that’s a different story

I’m so sick and tired about all these dum a-s politicans and their cheating habits.  Doesn’t American have enough problems????????

I don’t care who he’s screwing to be honest, but he broke So.CArolina law in a half-dozen ways and that I care about—he’s a public official and needs to be held accountable.

FP I agree with you 100%, whos doing what to whom is their business, if it breaking laws on the books for adultery, then he should be held accountable and forced to step down.

My point is if he’s using tax payers money for his trist then he needs to pay back every penny and be held accountable just like Joe next door, he’s no better then anyone else.

I’m just tired of the news making a big deal over a cheating SOB, their everywhere and we don’t hear about them, because he’s in the public eye it takes over the time on the news that could be used for delivering maybe, just maybe GOOD NEWS.

I’m glad that Jenny Sanford said that she’s focusing on her family (sons).  He surely doesn’t deserve her time.  I found it interesting that he used the analogy of David and Goliath because he’s certainly no David!

Hillary should have done the same thing…however, she chose to ‘stand by her man’

I’m with you Diamond…It sure was good not to see her standing beside him in that press conference. Let him take the brunt of his actions….

Amazing what powers we hold over men…huh ladies?

It is my belief that her stance may have contributed to her loss in the last election.

Ew. Just ew. Elliot Spitzer gets all high and mighty over the Sanford scandal. He’s never learned to get off his high horse. Via the NYPost:

There’s a huge difference between what South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford did, and what ex-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer did. “I didn’t fall in love with any of them,” Spitzer was overheard telling LMDC executive director Avi Schick the other day at Solo in the Sony Building on Madison, where they had the $24 prix-fixe lunch.

Right. He didn’t waste time with gooey love notes. He just handed his prostitutes cold hard cash and willfully broke the law.

Mrs. Spitzer was unavailable for comment.

Speaking of Ew: A John Edwards sex tape? (MM)

And this is why Elizabeth should follow in Jenny’s footsteps:

Former Edwards aide Andrew Young says the ex-senator and his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, once made a sex tape, according to someone who has seen Young’s book proposal.

St. Martin’s Press just inked a deal with Young, who also says in his proposal that, contrary to his public statement last year, he is not the father of Hunter’s infant daughter — Edwards is. Edwards has denied that.

The purported sex tape confirmed to Hunter that Edwards was even more reckless than he thought.

According to our source, Hunter confided to Young that she and Edwards talked about getting married should the candidate’s cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, pass away, even discussing what music they’d play at their wedding.  (Now this is very, very sick!!!)

Young’s proposal, which one editor said “was impossible to put down,” also contends that Sen. Edwards frequently clashed with running mate John Kerry during their 2004 race for the White House. And before Edwards owned up to his affair with Hunter, Young says he told him that Barack Obama had promised he’d make him attorney general if he didn’t pick him as his 2008 running mate.

Do you really think Spitzer was disposed of because he hired prostitutes?

IrishEyesNY
Absolutely not, albert miller: he was disposed of because he was going after the wall street cheats!!!!!!!!
