Maria Belen Chapur, Mark Sanford | 06/29/2009 9:45 am

Mark Sanford's Mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, Says Little About Affair; Wife Called a Hero

Chapur says she has idea who leaked affair-related e-mail messages to the press; friends say Sanford’s wife, credited with much of his political success, is no victim.

Maria Belen Chapur admitted over the weekend that she had a steamy affair with South Carolina governor and formerly rising GOP star Mark Sanford, but she’s saying little else on the scandal.

The 41-year-old Argentine woman also said she has a "firm suspicion" of who broke into her Hotmail account, where e-mail messages were housed containing details about her affair, reports The New York Times. But she doesn’t think the hacker is an ex-boyfriend. Whoever the culprit is, he or she broke into her e-mail around November 24, and, the following month, sent the e-mail messages to her ex and The State newspaper in Columbia, SC.

"I won’t speak about my private life as it just belongs to me,” Chapur said in a statement. "It has already been made too public during these last days, bringing to me even more pain."

Meanwhile, wife Jenny Sanford — the woman who is credited for many of her husband’s successes — is being heralded a hero by those who know her. She’s no victim. She kicked Sanford out of the family home, and says her No. 1 priority is her family, not her husband’s political career. She recently said she knew her husband has been cheating on her since January when she found a love letter, and that he had the gall to ask her if it was OK for him to visit his mistress. The Washington Post says Mrs. Sanford, 46, "seems to have drawn a new path for the aggrieved spouse of a philandering politician, an episode that has become something of a ritual in American politics."

Cyndi Mosteller, a longtime friend and prominent Republican operative in South Carolina, told the Post:

Jenny is the hero in this story. She’s the hero to her children, and I think she’s the hero to this state. In the midst of this tragedy, she is standing strong to who she is and what she believes in … I think Jenny has not had these types of ambitions, but I think every woman in South Carolina would vote for Jenny Sanford for governor right now.

Jenny Sanford certainly isn’t the first wife of a prominent politician to have her family turned upside down because of a sex scandal. Hillary Clinton endured Bill’s Oval Office antics; Dina Matos McGreevey had to deal with her New Jersey governor husband Jim McGreevey’s public outing as a gay man; Silda Spitzer was mortified to find out her husband, then-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, was spending time with prostitutes; and Elizabeth Edwards not only had to deal with her husband’s extramarital activities, but the possibility that he fathered a child with another woman, on top of it all.

What do you think Jenny Sanford should do? Should she forgive her husband or kick him to the curb for good?

If he was there for state business why didn’t anyone know where he was?

I say let him stay.  He’s only got 1 year left in his last term.  He can’t run again.  I’d imagine the SC legislatures will probably make his political agenda a nightmare.  He’ll be a constant reminder of the hyprocities of the Republican party.  If he insert his political opinion anywhere, will anyone take him seriously?  Like grand standing against the stimulus, he should do that now.

His wife running for his office might not be a bad thing.  As for her kicking him to the curb, she’s a very inteligent woman that respect herself.  She’ll do what’s best for her and her sons.

I believe Jenny is/was the force behind Mark’s political success. Unfortunately, she forgot the heart and soul of the man as she began to mold her masterpiece. I have no sympathy for her and her bible thumping "Stepford Wife" life style. Who knows, her ex-wall street mentally may have been involved in the Governors decision to invest the pension funds of the people of South Carolina into the stock market. What a disaster that turned out to be and may account for SC big deficit. Jenny a victim I don’t think so, more like a miscalculation her part.

He left his post as governor and was unreachable. That alone should make the citizens of South Carolina demand his resignation. The fact that he allowed his personal life to get in the way of clear thinking should make anyone who thought of this man as president one day, thankful that this flaw in reason and character was discovered now rather than later.

Yes, you’re absolutely right and it’s also lucky Maria has been able to discover the real Sanford now rather than later. However, I think the word "flaw" sounds a bit puritanical. Human nature is not "flawless" and people do fall in love or in lust outside their marriage. Yes he should resign, not because he is imperfect, but because he is unable to handle complexity, conflict and confidentiality.

He is such a jerk asking his wife if he could continue to see his mistress what gall. He allowed himself to think he was better then others and could do what ever he wanted. I do not think that he loves his wife or his kids. If he loved those kids he would have spent Father’s day with them instead they were left alone while he went to see the mistress. He does not deserve his family, they can do better with a man with morals. I am disappointed with the Republican party and that fact they are electing these immoral people to higher level of government.

Rachael…I believe he wanted to see her to end the relationship rather than do it by email!  He was not going to be with them for Father’s Day anyway since his wife  asked him to take the two weeks seperation to reflect on things.  Afterall she has known about the affair since January.

How was the Republican party responsible for electing "immoral people"????  l   Are you dissappointed in those Democrats that elected John Edwards too?

It was not stated by his wife that is what he intended to do that in Argentina just that he begged to go her. As to the children regardless if his wife did not want to talk with him he still could of set up a time to take his sons out for Father’s day. He could have emailed her or have one of his trusted staff who lied about his whereabouts or even a friend who would be happy to assist with him seeing his children. I myself do not believe that his wife would have been cruel to him on a day which means alot to most fathers.I am disappointed in a party that I belong to who do not stand for what they profess: note the last 2 politicians that have been found out to be unfaithful after they have put others down for the same offenses in the public eye.

No public figure should even think of having an affair. What an idiot! Hasn’t he seen what happens when he does? Political suicide…

Except in France.

Laura,

"Except in France"   You are correct! And what a breath of fresh air not to be so religiously obsessed with sex!

Sandford had no savoir-faire.

N.P. is correct, it’s not our business what she does.  He is of course, a cad along with about two zillion other Republicans and Democrats who have done the same thing.

focus should be on the laws, if any, were broken.    Let’s leave the personal issues behind closed doors.  It’s none of our business and we don’t have all the facts.

If we’re going to care about who our elected officials are having sex with, why not lock them all in chastity belts for their term of office and hand the keys to their spouses.  If we’re not going to care, them let them hash it out on Divorce Court.
