Summing the Summits: More Splendid Speeches, by Liz Peek

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 9/21)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist and the author of wOw’s SHEconomics.

Is Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi looking more and more like Clarabell or is it just my imagination? And seriously, after 40 years at Libya’s helm, shouldn’t he have risen above the rank of Colonel?

The fact that these thoughts are uppermost after reviewing the goings-on at the United Nations this week says it all. Though President Obama appears to have wrested from President Medvedev a vague commitment to consider toughening sanctions on Iran (presumably in exchange for torching our proposed missile defense system) and extracted from China possible support for a nuclear weapons ban, not much of substance emerged from the weeklong gridlock imposed on midtown Manhattan. Now the party moves to Pittsburgh, where the G-20 has first turned its attentions to not-so-shocking claims that Iran has been illegally enriching uranium. Beyond setting a deadline for Iran to come clean about its activities, the G-20 leaders will push to rebalance the engines of growth, insisting that the U.S. consumer cannot support the advances of the rest of the globe.

This is diplomatic code for the U.S. reining in our spendthrift consumers and China doing all it can to stimulate domestic spending. That the Chinese have even participated in such conversations is considered astonishing by some, given the nation’s history of going it alone. Before rushing to embrace Beijing’s newfound clubbiness, we should consider that nearly everything China does is in its self-interest. Starting with the extraordinary success of last year’s Olympics, and bolstered by its impressive economic performance during the financial crisis, China’s confidence is in full bloom. They are ready to climb the global podium.

One symptom of China’s emerging self-importance is that tweaking the West has become a national pastime. As the country approaches its 60th anniversary on October 1, the Communist Party has continued its tradition of honoring "model workers." While in the past these individuals have typically been oilfield workers or latrine cleaners, the Financial Times reports that this year the country is praising bankers – of all people – sending them out to tour the country and extolling their efforts to "maintain growth, protect people’s livelihoods (and) maintain stability." What more mischievous way to contrast China’s continued growth with the West’s banking meltdown?

More importantly, next week the country will put on a military review that will draw global attention to the massive 20-year investment China has made in its weapons stash and in its armed forces. Among other new toys on display will be an upgraded intercontinental nuclear missile capable of reaching Washington. After decades of hosting a military long on bodies and short on guns, the Chinese now boast a 21st-century army of 2.3 million.

Competition with China that originally emanated from corporate boardrooms is, in other words, spreading. Because China holds over $800 billion in U.S. government debt, a figure that continues to grow, the country expects and indeed has a seat at our financial table. What does it mean for Americans?

Our indebtedness to China means that we are not in a position to bully Beijing to revalue the yuan, though early on the Obama administration talked tough on this issue, which in turn limits our ability to export to China and to other countries. It also means that Americans will not be alone in pressing the administration to rein in government deficits. The Chinese will have to balance its continuing need for export demand with its concern over depreciating dollar-based assets. The bottom line is that our complicated symbiotic relationship with the Chinese is yet another factor arguing for slower growth in the U.S. going forward.

Al knows that he is full of hot air, but it doesn’t worry him, he is making over $100 million on this scam and is now spending your tax dollars in Europe making cars.

What a bunch of suckers he takes us all for. I suggest that people check out the Chicago Climate Exchange and see who and what are purchasing Green investments. Over $1 Billion of Carbon assets, bought by Goldman Sachs using the money that they got in payout from the AIG bailout.

But then you would have to find out that Giethner set that all up for them, and that the lobbyist for GS got a job with Barney Frank.

They are playing the American public for suckers and making billions for them and thier buddies.

Suckers!

There are the ‘cynics’ among who claim that Mr. Gore was ‘given’ the topic of glow bull warming as ‘parting’ gift for NOT challenging the hanging; dangling chads of Floriduh.  Kind of ‘an atta boy’ for his efforts.  Always, always do follow the money trail…

Quite interesting that ‘carbon credit’ ‘assets’ and are being hoisted upon a failing economy as some kind of new (trully global) fiat?

The Global Warming debate by people such as yourself that deny its existence bring to mind the people who denied the ravages of tobacco and smoking 20 yrs. ago.

Diana T,

You are so right………..

Reading this kind of thread is one of those that make me want to vomit.

Stupidity is just stupidity….doesn’t seem to be anything (particularly truth) that can change that kind of thinking.

Hey, Dona, how are you?  Always great to hear from you.

One of the best sites to read about the ravages of global warming is the National Geographic website.  It explains it in ways we lay people can understand.  As I say,  the same people who denied the dangers of smoking are the same people who deny the existence of global warming now.  Here in Central Kentucky, tobacco was the back bone of the agricultural community for decades; now farmers are moving into food crops, soy beans and wine grapes.

Stay well….

That is really not their hardware.  The Chinese fighter jets are the  J-10’s.  China imported those J-10 engines from Russia because China cannot make or copy the Russian engine.    The J-10 is also a copy of an American/German aircraft of the 90’s, The X 31A . There were two. One crashed, the other is in a museum.

Although China denies it, it appears it has entered into a deal to sell ten J-10’s to Iran. All the more reason for President Obama to keep his ear to the ground when it comes to China and Iran, which he clearly appears to be doing.

Liz. You mentioned a survey in “Business Week”, but I did not find any reference to it on their web site. Could you please give us some reference links?

Dizzy is an understatement for what Americans are feeling now. That slick sled to hell is leaving us reeling.

You know what is funny here, so many don’t really get what is happening. Liz does, for it is a "grab bag" that Obama has manufactured for the American people to deal with. Overwhelm them, out last them, lie to them and then do what you really want to.

I take it that Maggie hasn’t heard the news as of her post. Iran is further along than we have been told by "the one". So, all that the diplomacy did was give them more time. What a ruse, and what a bunch of nincompoops this administration is made of. They aren’t even good socialist, just a bunch of pretend wannabe’s playing super power.

Liz, you are too kind.

Lauren:  bunch of nincompoops

I hope they’re just nincompoops…  nincompoops can be dealt with and the damage repaired.  For me, this administration straddles the responsible and irresponsible.

Once again, Lauren, try to stay current.  For the past several years Iran has been buidling water reactors and approximately 3000 centrifuges.   GWB knew this.  He said, " You guys better cut that out!"   Iran gave him the finger.  George went back to watching the football games and eating his pretzels.

Of course, Iran is farther along than many people believed. Lauren, no big revelation there !  For eight years they did whatever they wanted.  Oh wait… you believe they achieved all this just in the last few months?   Alrighty  then.  :)

Alllrighty then.” - I can just hear Jim Carrey now… LOL!

You left out the part about GWB started handing out exemptions to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. I am sure that Iran and North Korea both found encouragement in that little head-scratcher.

Well, now that we’re not in fact numero uno in everything (by our own estimation anyway), it will be interesting to see how the world economy shakes out, as well as what it will mean to all of us. It’s a scary place to be (not knowing). Is it possible that somehow eventually a greater piece of the pie for all workers will result in a concomitant slowdown of world population growth, more responsible use of all resources, fewer violent confrontations? I’m dreaming …

Dear Liz:

To be sure, we have alot to discuss these days with so much going on.  Since we no longer get government/political threads during the week, we look forward to Friday and your usual thought provoking articles.

President Obama during his 38 minute UN speech apologized once again for America because she "acted alone."   I don’t know about the rest of you but I know we have many allies and America did not act alone.   I believe if anyone should be apologizing it should be the American people for electing this inexperienced narcissist to the highest office in our country.   Now there’s an apology I can wrap my arms around.

As for China, they need us and we need them.   They are not the shareholders.   They are the bondholders.   We are the shareholders and as such we are banking on our ability to get a rise in our equities.   If we do China wins.   If we don’t China loses.   Risky business this bailing people out….as we’ll soon find out with Stimulus II

We have a hidden liability that no one is talking about and that is our massive subsidization of home mortages.   No one in the White House wants to talk about this but someone needs to.  Our government is propping up the housing market with cheap money-FHA loans, Freddie/Fannie guarantees and lending out cheap money @ l/2 percent over long Treasury rates.   The banks will soon be "weak in the knees" again so stock up your liquor cabinets, buckle your seatbelts and get ready for Stimulus Part II.   And because our administration is extending some of the programs in Stimulus I now that $787 billion pricetag has just gone up.    So, "Knock Knock.   Whose there?   Mr. Inflation.  Mr. Inflation who?  Mr. Inflation sent to you compliments of  President Obama."   We cannot avoid answering that knock on our doors.

I wish I had a list of things that President Obama has actually accomplished but I don’t.   I see him as being long on promises and very short on bringing those promises to fruition.

It’s time to take off your training pants, Mr. President, and put your big boys on.   No more lies.     And don’t you dare apologize for the United States of America  again!   It’s time for you to put your superiorty complex in a bottom drawer and step forward and do what is absolutely in the best interest of ALL Americans…not just a few.
