Susan Rice, North Korea Missile Launch | 05/26/2009 8:20 am

Susan Rice Warns North Korea of Continuing Missile Launches (Video)

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, sent a strong message to North Korea today after the rogue nation fired two more short-range missiles into the ocean Tuesday, a day after they tested a nuclear bomb.

"We are prepared to step up our efforts to interdict and inspect ships with suspect North Korean cargo," Rice told MSNBC’s "Morning Joe" this morning. Rice also vowed that the United States will act in other ways to send the message that  "this is the wrong path for North Korea to pursue and that they will pay a price."

It’s an early test for the Obama administration. The president blasted North Korea for "blatant violation of international law."

Pyongyang fired the missiles today, despite global uproar from the United Nations and elsewhere after it test-fired three others on Monday. Even China and Russia — typically allies of the communist country — criticized North Korea for the launch. The United States said it would lead an effort to intercept ships from North Korea or other countries suspected of carrying nuclear cargo, The Washington Post says; South Korea is on board with that effort, which North Korea isn’t taking too kindly. South Korea and Japan said today that the test poses a serious threat to regional peace.

"The DPRK’s nuclear test not only poses a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, and southeast Asia and beyond, but also represents a grave challenge to the international non-proliferation regime," said South Korean disarmament ambassador Im Han-tauck. In return, Reuters reports, North Korea blasted South Korea and Japan for denouncing the test, saying that could prevent it from supporting efforts to curb production of atomic bomb-making material. The UN Security Council on Monday said North Korea violated a 2006 resolution barring it from using nuclear weapons.

Strong worded statements aren’t aren’t going to do much.  With a 4.7 Richter Scale reading; the nuke tested bring NoKo up to US 1945 technology (think Hiroshima).  They have it.  Now…they just have to work on their delivery system.

If that doesn’t scare you…you are not paying attention.

Japan, easily in striking range, in outraged; and not just at Kim Jong Il.  At our new Administration…and their ‘strongly worded’ statements.  I have read, various places today, that it would take Japan less than a month to get their defenses up nuke ready capacity…they have (as allies) have our technology.

The timing of this is so ‘in your face Obama’ as well.  First test, when our new President was on his European Apology Tour…didn’t Kim test the first one when Obama was apologizing for US arms proliferatins whilest in Belgium?  And now nuke (successful) test number two comes on our Memorial Day.  Kim is not being too subtle is he?

When is North Korea ever subtle?? The first test was in 2006 and they have been working on improving their capabilities ever since. This is not an Obama, in your face, it wouldn’t have mattered who was president. North Korea is and has always been a threat, they also know that the U.S. is spread way to thin militarily.  Their children are taught from early on that America is bad, and they hate us. I hope that all aid to their country is cut off, but China and Russia must put the pressure on or nothing much will come from more sanctions, in my opinion.

But Mel, Obama was/is supposed to be the great unifier.  The ‘World’ wanted him elected…and when he took office, alllll problems were to cease because, well the ‘World’ would now love the US for having the foresight to elect Barrack Obama.

Just a little FYI media note.  Yesterday, Memorial Day…President Obama did the traditional rememberance and ceremony at the Tombs of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington.  Then (less than 18 hours after a 4.7 Richter Scale, Hiroshimaesque nuke was exploded in a tunnel in North Korea) he went and played 18 holes of golf.  Golf.  I fully expect someone to ask the Gibbster today what Obama shot.  Can you honestly imagine if GWBush went golfing given the same perimeters of the day?  I post this as just one more example of the sychophant, impotent DC press corps.

But nothing, North Korea will be North Korea, nothing from any U.S. president is going to change them, they have been at this for years.

FYI….I really don’t care if Pres. Obama was playing golf,  its not like he was on his "ranch" cleaning brush, while all the intelligence was pointing to an attack on American soil

Yup—Mel, this is nothing but N. Korea flexing it’s tiny muscles—they know perfectly well that either China or we can blow them off the face of the earth.  And they have been as you say doing things like this for years—nothing new .

Tiny muscles???  A underground deployment of a nuclear detonation that causes a 4.7 jump on the Richter Scale is not tiny.

It ain’t a hydrogen bomb which could blast them back to the stone age and they know it. What are they going to do with it? Military toys for the crazed leader of N. Korea is all it is. If he ever used it it would be the end of No. Korea as an entity.

This has nothing to do with Obama.  That’s just silly.  If John McCain were President, North Korea still would be applying full court press .  The Bush Administration knew Iran was buiding new water reactors and had installed 3000 new centrifuges.  All GWB did was make angry noises and get his steely glare going.

Everything that happened during the ‘8 long years’ of the Bush Administration was/or has been blamed upon George W. Bush.  Everything…no matter now big or small.  Now that he is out of office, things are historically STILL being blamed upon him; and apologized for by the current Administration.  Here, on WOW, almost every other post blames GWB for every ill, problem or slight (real or imagined) that occurred during his tenure; yet this 4.7 Richter Scale nuclear blast occurs, on Obama’s watch…and he blissfully goes off to golf the same day.  Media Mulligan???  Yet again, another ‘its cool, its just Barrack’ pass???  If John McCain were President…and he went golfing hours after the blast, do you think he would get a pass on his ‘lack of concern?’

Since it seems to bother you so much that Obama went golfing after the blast — in your opinion, what SHOULD he have been doing?    Perhaps you think he should have gone on tv and told us we should invade North Korea and "bringem back dead or alive"?

The hypocrisy, and synchophantic nature of the Washington media is what bothers me most in this instance.  Obama’s golf outing will be given a ‘Mulligan’ by the adoring press corps.  That is scary in its own right.  You are being intellectually dishonest if you think any politician be it Bush, McCain, even Bill Clinton would have gotten a North Korean, Hiroshima-like nuke blast Memorial Day golf ‘pass’ from the ever ‘enchanted’ DC media.

And maybe, a President that would have to answer to a discerning, questioning media might re-thing the appearance of playing 18 holes of golf when a major nuke has been launched in North Korea, whilst he is Commander in Chief of appoximately 35,000 US service personnal stationed in South Korea.  Yes.  Bad PR move…that only a handful will ever discuss…as once again the media carries not only Obama’s water…but apparently his golf bags too.

Really……..I notice you have been using the word "synchophantic" a lot………it must have some meaning to you that just can’t be communicated with any other word………..what would that meaning be?

Funny I don’t note the terminology others use and question it…but I will explain my meaning.

By definition, syncophant means ‘a servile, self-seeking, underling, who attempts to win favor, by abundant flattery, of a perceived influential, superior person.’  A fairly apt description of the White House Press Corps.

Since I have a really strong vocabulary, I always notice words that are generally used in conversation — and then I wonder, why would someone choose THAT word, if in fact another word would readily convey the same meaning/message.

So……I looked the word up on Wikipedia and found just the definition you gave (you really should cite your sources) — it seems you were not able to explain the meaning in your own words.

I also noticed that the word came up from a lot of right wing websites………

Come on, Mary Contrary….. as usual you are making a mountain out of your many mole hills.  Surely, you realize that the golf outing was planned weeks in advance, as is everything else that takes the Pres away from the White House.  Secondly, surely by now you also realize that the Ptesident will discuss a matter like Korea’s launch with his military advisors and other advisors before making any reactionary decision one way or the other.

So, Mary, are you suggesting the President should have called about 30-40 of his  advisors and told them to drop whatever they were doing and hustle on over to the White House ASAP???

In your life, does everyday common sense ever take precedence over sheer negative , knee jerk reaction?
