Texas Senate Approves 'Choose Life' License Plate

Texas state senators gave the green light to ‘choose life’ license plates, but House has no interest.
By The Staff at wowOwow.com
The Texas State Senate yesterday approved a bill that would create "choose life" license plates, revenue from which would benefit pro-adoption causes. The vote came out to 22-9, with only one Republican dissenting.

Supporters cited other states that had similar plates, which have collectively raised about $9 million for their cause.

While Gov. Rick Perry has signaled his support for the bill, he may not get the opportunity to sign it, for the state House seems poised to pass the bill.

The House Transportation Subcommittee on License Plates held hearings on the matter earlier this month, but did not have a vote. Chairman Joe Pickett will not allow a vote, according to Life News.

That’s not surprising but they can have what they like on their license plates as far as I’m concerned that is their choice.  Just like I was proud as punch having OBAMA 08 on mine.

To recap my invisible post: Providing funding in support of adoption services is a worthy cause. Placing children in loving, permanent families should be a priority in American society.

It seems we are back to "invisable" posts today, isn’t it frustrating?  You have to copy and paste to get them on.  Abortion is a personal choice a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body no one has the right to take that away, but the pro life folks can have what they like on their license plates.

What I dislike most about ‘invisibility’ is when I see the blank post and think ‘What exactly did I just say’!!!

Texas has the highest rate of teen pregnancies in the nation.  No surprise  there, considering its size .  Its abstinence program has been costly and a huge failure.  At least the legislature is trying to do something for a good cause.

Maggie,

You are right about that.  Our rate of teen pregnancy is certainly high!  People have said so many ugly things.  I’ve heard many people blame it on the illegal population.  People complain that illegals are draining our resources; however,  a lot of those same people are against abortion but could care less about the child after its born.  I hope that resources go to building strong adoption programs so that these young women know they have more than 2 alternatives.

The Tx boys are politicizing, ladies, just politicizing - again. Still jumping the "hedge" and bringing personal choice (not FOCA) and religion into their politicizing. Soon, Texas will be the theocracy that everyone so dispises now in Iran. Interesting folks, how people get so far right they get left, and so far left they get right, but oppps, the right hand forgets what the left was doing, and vaisa-versa. (Like the gov who jumped on the "right" train when the "hedge" began to grow - (sic) if he can do it, surely so can I.

How about "FOSTER * ADOPT," or "TEXAS LOVES KIDS," or … at least something that does not infer politics vs. human rights?  The state has no state income tax (so the feds pour $$ into TX) but if any state does, it could give a great tax break to those who adopt and/or foster children… like "walking the talk."

State taxes are federally deductible so why Texas continues with this "income tax-free state" stuff is beyond me, and far more could be done in that state to help others putting TX on the lower rungs of national status.

I so agree.  TX is already on the lower national rungs when it comes to education; it doesn’t exactly smack of child advocacy.   Adoption also should not take three years and cost four times your yearly salary.

ABSOLUTELY. I know of a couple trying to adopt - her first birth nearly destroyed her - and they love children, plus have an extended family to "die" for, but because (in TX) she is "overweight" they’ve told them they will not be able to adopt a child, much less children; they’re going to Mexico to adopt, now.

Texas with all of its oil money, and refusal to have a state income tax, should be ashamed of its standing nationally, and it slep into oblivion in Money Follows the Person (from 1st to about 48th in the nation). A friend of mine entered a challenge contest to balance the state budget some years back, about 2003 I think, and won - not a word to her after that even from her newspaper that sponsored it. Guess why? Their senator was head of the senate finance committee for the state. It was simply too easy to "balance" it with changes made to benefit all their residents. :-(
