Tina Brown Wonders if Michelle Obama Has Eclipsed Oprah

Michelle Obama’s presence in London this week caused more than a small stir. Newspapers the world over covered the First Lady’s every move, especially her meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.

All this attention has Tina Brown wondering whether Mrs. Obama has now become "the new Oprah." It isn’t simply that everyone in the world has their eyes on the First Lady; she’s also coming across as completely authentic. Though no one’s saying Oprah’s a phony — not by a long shot — Brown suggests the talk-show host’s success has impaired her impact.

Writes Brown at The Daily Beast:

Oprah’s stock in trade has always been her powerful, unmediated connection. She could feel your pain and empower you to talk about it. In doing so (as long as it was Oprah you chose to talk to), you were redeemed.
But when you become a juggernaut business franchise, authenticity can’t help transmuting into something manufactured. It’s the need to feed the beast, to raise the stakes, to keep the act fresh, to maintain the monster ratings. Slowly but surely, you become a brand, not a person. You might as well have a little R in a circle next to your name.

Brown goes on to explain that Mrs. Obama has the unique ability, like Princess Diana before her, to "create a circle of intimacy in the middle of a crowd." And that power has long-lasting impact on the international scene. So, reader, do you agree? Could Michelle Obama in fact be the nation’s new "iconic female African American role model," as Brown suggests?

All I can say is that America is witnessing the cartooning of the position of the First Lady of the United States.

It’s really harsh of the media to not hold her in the utmost esteem.

Hyphenated Americans is passe. Neither woman can be viewed as an icon when both are so superficial: Oprah discusses her weight; Obama is known for her clothes. Not substanative for icon status.  Tom Wolfe is an icon, these women are…not.

Lars…your reasoning is limited and silly. but then we’ll consider the source. Tom Wolfe is an icon …to you. First I doubt either woman is interested in icon status…I think Oprah’s bank account is a good substitute for icon status and Michelle Obama is one of only 39 women (one president wasn’t married or was a widower?)to ever be First Lady that fits the critieria for icon status…

Is it just me, or does this seem a little on the racist side?

Oprah Winfrey is iconic, not because she is African American, but because she is SHE.  Sure, a part of all of us is what ethnicity we are, but I’d like to think that we as a country, have moved beyond the lables and more into the "content of our character" better yardstick.

Michelle Obama seems to be generating a lot of press, and also seems to have great potential.  But to compare her to Oprah is both premature and a tad bit racist.  Why not compare her (as others have) to Jackie Kennedy (for her style) or Bette Ford (for her forthright demeanor and bravery)?

I had the same thought. Why not suggest MO could be eclipsing Diana or Jackie O or some other admired public figure? There’s no evidence that MO’s ambition is to be a billionaire queen of all media like Oprah. It’s like suggesting she’s eclipsing Jackie Joyner Kersee. MO is a lawyer and public figure and Kersee is a world-record winning runner. The only thing they have in common is that they’re successful women who happen to be black.

Now you’re talking, Rudi!   But, golly, give her a chance to put her projects on the books!   It takes time.

Thank you nanchan…too many of the folks can’t make themselves see either Oprah or Michelle outside of their race. Odd isn’t it! Wonder what that is about? duh!

Insightful, nanchan u. Thank you. It’s been a while since the U.S. has had a first lady who was so open and accessible, and so obviously a partner to her husband. It might have something to do with the family’s youthfulness … Whatever it is that touches me and seems so special about her, I’m very pleased with all she’s done and said so far. I am proud that the people in other countries see her as representing the women of the U.S. Imagine that! How free she must seem to them! How much herself! This is what a woman can do, what a woman can be when she is NOT chained by male fear and prejudice.

How about "iconic female role model"? She is intelligent, genuine, approachable and family-oriented. I admire her accomplishments and the balancing of her public responsibilities with her private family life. I would be amazed at how many other women would be able to handle all of this with the same grace & humor she has displayed in such a short period of time. Bravo, Michelle!!

So were all of our other First Ladies, Terri D.   And, all of our other First Ladies were every bit as deserving without having to cheapen their position as a so called "rock star."    Please, let us at least give her a chance to accomplish something.

It’s a sad day in America, folks.

First Lady Michelle Obama is a wonderful role model! She’s intelligent, articulate, creative and classy! She makes her position llok good! Why are there always comparison and references to ones ethnicity? Both Oprah and First Lady Michelle Obama are accomplished and admired not only among African -American women but women and men period!

How many persons male and female have achieved the success Oprah has?

This entire question sneaks of racism! There will be no divide and conquering going on here! African-Americans are not flattered by some bigot trying to make them their favorite pet! Both sisters are good friends and admire each other! There will be no cat fights here!

You are clearly replying from a preconceived idea of the Obamas as "rock stars". This is an image created and promulgated by the right wing media. As far as actual accomplishments go, Michele Obama has already been to government agencies, soup kitchens, city schools and in the garden with schoolchildren. How exactly has this "cheapen"ed the image of First Lady? Let’s leave the right-wing rhetoric out of the discussion, please.
