Nancy Pelosi on Torture | 04/27/2009 1:25 pm

What Did She Know About 'Torture'? Nancy Pelosi on the Defensive

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to be on the defensive over what exactly she knew — and when she knew it — about the Bush administration’s "enhanced interrogation" techniques.

The California Democrat befuddled some reporters, Republicans and others last week when she gave what Politico says were some "convoluted answers" to reporters about the interrogations. Now Republicans have jumped at the chance to pummel Pelosi’s insistence that she didn’t know what was going on. CIA Chief Porter Goss said she must be suffering from "amnesia" — since he was with her in 2002 when they were briefed by the CIA on the techniques.

Goss wrote over the weekend:

I am slack-jawed to read that members claim to have not understood that the techniques on which they were briefed were to actually be employed; or that specific techniques such as ‘waterboarding’ were never mentioned. It must be hard for most Americans of common sense to imagine how a member of Congress can forget being told about the interrogations of Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed. In that case, though, perhaps it is not amnesia but political expedience.

A Pelosi adviser told Politico that the speaker knew the GOP was going to come after her, and that they likely will again once another batch of alleged torture photos comes out. No doubt that’s going to stir up yet another political mess about how the U.S. treated terror suspects.

The Washington Times reports today that Obama’s release of the CIA memos on interrogation techniques last week, and his recent acquiescence to a bipartisan review panel to look into those aspects of Bush’s presidency, has caused such a furor, even some congressional Democrats want it to just go away. Although, it seems Obama is backing off of that stance now, saying we need to insted look forward. And the newspaper agrees:

The politicization of policy differences has been a fact of life in Washington since the Watergate era, but in the past one could reasonably expect that such political warfare would end when a new administration commenced. Investigatory panels, such as the ‘Commission of Inquiry’ called for by Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat, would represent an unprecedented escalation of political warfare in the American system. Proponents of such tribunals exhibit a spirit of political retribution not seen since the end of the Civil War.

What do you think? Should we have a so-called "truth commission" to look into alleged Bush-era misdeeds, or should the country move on and focus on other things, like the economy?

If they are going after the previous administration they should go after Pelosi and other Dems as well.

I think it is a waste fo time and money and will accomplish little. It has already hurt our safety in the long run!

S.J., you are correct - let it go and move forward because nothing productive will be accomplished.

Also, Nancy’s out of luck trying to plead ignorance here.

Kelly, so sorry about your JRT. What you see is my 10 year old terrorist. They are such wonderful companions, aren’t they? I got Jackie when she was 18 months and she has been fantastic. She has her issues, but I wouldn’t trade her for anything!

Sorry I never got notice about your comment - I always like to read what people write to me!

Did someone mention "spirits?"   After the weekend you had with the libs you could easily be in detox this morning!   Great job, guys and gals, on holding your own.

Let’s see "100 days 100 mistakes."   Can’t wait to discuss that topic.

Yep: well D and LL, I have to tell you.  Last night, one of my most liberal friends called me, and I read her the posts and she was embarrassed…she and I go round the track, as my pop would have said, but she told me that she was horrified that someone would attack my personal integrity (meaning I survived and thrived through the marital abuse) by attacking my politics.

I think SHE was more angry than I was!  Then we ripped into each other about the pirates and agreed to meet for lunch on Sat… isn’t that what it’s all about?  Disagreeing in a polite manner and moving on?  Bringing things up for discussion POLITELY without personal attacks… if I was a vindictive person, I would wish my ex on a certain poster… then again, he is the father of my child, I have to look after her best interests! (meeeeow!)

Glad to have you both back.. let’s roll up the sleeves.  This week will be interesting!

Nanchan…I also have a very close friend that is now a liberal.

She was a Republican, but after years of pressure from the faculity at the college she works for, she has felt that she must support liberal causes. Very sad, when she was asked her political affiliation, she was ridiculed for her Republican views. The elitist academics ostracized her from faculity meetings, etc. Her job was on the line.

She made the decision to keep her job and not rock the boat. She has elderly parents to care for, and is single. She can not afford to loose that job at her age.

She has become very defensive of her decision and has cut ties with those that know her plight. It is sad to me. She is embarrassed of being manipulated, she is fearful of reprise, and she is living a lie.

At least conservatives can discuss politic politely…but the liberals often times exert pressures to shame others into their point of view…

Good for you and your friend!
