What Did She Know About 'Torture'? Nancy Pelosi on the Defensive

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to be on the defensive over what exactly she knew — and when she knew it — about the Bush administration’s "enhanced interrogation" techniques.
The California Democrat befuddled some reporters, Republicans and others last week when she gave what Politico says were some "convoluted answers" to reporters about the interrogations. Now Republicans have jumped at the chance to pummel Pelosi’s insistence that she didn’t know what was going on. CIA Chief Porter Goss said she must be suffering from "amnesia" — since he was with her in 2002 when they were briefed by the CIA on the techniques.
I am slack-jawed to read that members claim to have not understood that the techniques on which they were briefed were to actually be employed; or that specific techniques such as ‘waterboarding’ were never mentioned. It must be hard for most Americans of common sense to imagine how a member of Congress can forget being told about the interrogations of Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed. In that case, though, perhaps it is not amnesia but political expedience.
A Pelosi adviser told Politico that the speaker knew the GOP was going to come after her, and that they likely will again once another batch of alleged torture photos comes out. No doubt that’s going to stir up yet another political mess about how the U.S. treated terror suspects.
The Washington Times reports today that Obama’s release of the CIA memos on interrogation techniques last week, and his recent acquiescence to a bipartisan review panel to look into those aspects of Bush’s presidency, has caused such a furor, even some congressional Democrats want it to just go away. Although, it seems Obama is backing off of that stance now, saying we need to insted look forward. And the newspaper agrees:
The politicization of policy differences has been a fact of life in Washington since the Watergate era, but in the past one could reasonably expect that such political warfare would end when a new administration commenced. Investigatory panels, such as the ‘Commission of Inquiry’ called for by Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat, would represent an unprecedented escalation of political warfare in the American system. Proponents of such tribunals exhibit a spirit of political retribution not seen since the end of the Civil War.
What do you think? Should we have a so-called "truth commission" to look into alleged Bush-era misdeeds, or should the country move on and focus on other things, like the economy?

deber B —- The "Queen" lost her Tiara a long time ago as far as I’m concerned. Maybe Pelosi has lost her glow with the President. Oh my, so sad. I think she was definitely in on that meeting and gave her consent to waterboarding. That’s why she’s having a tizzy now.
Oh, by the way, friend of mine at Notre Dame says they are receiving petitions daily against Obama speaking at graduation. Seems one petition had over 350,000 signatures and more are coming. Also, the alumni donations have fallen - so far the total is $8.5 million. And, there are students forming a protest. Some of the alumni are calling for the Presiden of Notre Dame to resign. Hum, it doesn’t sound good.
I’m sure Pelosi would not be asked to be a substitute speaker!
The liberals on this site are in agreement, too, if she’s guilty of anything let’s hear it now.
My daughter graduated from Notre Dame. I’m not sure how she would be responding if she were still there. What all of this says to me is that Americans are speaking up. Where that will take this country is unknown at the moment.
Talk about profiling! The ACLU helps anybody who furthers their own limited agenda, how hypocritical!
True, Nan. They defended that Republican traitor to his country Oliver North, the Reagan aide who illegally traded arms with the Iranian terror regime.
They defended the right wing extremist Westboro "church" who held up signs like "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God for 9/11" at the funerals of US troops who were killed in the Iraq occupation.
They defended an anti-gay student in Louisiana. They defended the extreme right wing American Nazi Party. They defended Republican Sen. Larry Craig. They even defended Rush Limbaugh
And right wing stalwarts like Dick Armey — whose corporate lobbyists gave millions to the teabagging movement — and Bob Barr — the thrice-married pol who wrote the "Defense of Marriage Act" — have both worked for the ACLU.
Involved in what? voiced their opinion about what? The Bush administration for years and years had said that "America does not torture" Now that they are out of power…. the truth comes out ….. even Cheney has now said that we tortured but it was ok because we got good intelligence from it…… now he wants info put out that he said didnt exist when he was in office.
The truth is they engaged in torture….. they had lawyers justify it….. then denied it…… and they did it all in YOUR name for reasons of security……. anything can be justified, but that doesnt make it right……. if no one is held accountable, then America will be thought of as a country that believes in torture…… which includes you and I…… Torture is not a political issue…. it is a human rights issue.
if no one is held accountable, then America will be thought of as a country that believes in torture
exactly. but it looks like some people in this neck of the woods don’t seem to care what the world thinks of us and what our actions say to people and what it says about our moral standing (or what we have left)
Yes Lady Gator….guess it looks like Obama is backing the bus over Pelosi. He needed to get a grip on her and her number is up. Dog eat dog there….Hilliary will be a bit harder for him to disarm. She is more experienced at this game….Chicago has nothing on the Clinton years….let the games begin…
Unfortuantely for Americans, our Nation is just something to use in Obama’s game. He has stirred up this pot as a diversion from his power and money grab, while isolating and destroying Pelosi at the same time….it worked.
Nanchan brought up something that did not occur to me, that the flu hysteria is just one more diversion. It makes sense when one considers the nature of other flu warnings. Obama riles up the fear, (as usual) then addresses the Nation as the soothing voice of reason and control.
He just keeps ringing that bell….ding ding ding …slobber, relax ding ding ding…slobber again….Or rather, it is most probably Soros behing that curtain with his finger on the bell…..
You said the magic word, "diversion." Yours are just dark and twisted fantasies, of course. But from 2002 through 2005, the Bush administration really did issue terror warnings as distractions to steer public attention away from bad political news at least 13 times. Here are few:
Hey Lady Gee, just returned from your neck of the woods for a fun reunion with an old friend.
I loved your post. You make tremendous sense. Sadly, the entire White House is obcessed with George Bush. George Bush will look like a saint by 2012.
deber b — Hope you enjoyed your visit in the "Sunshine State". Tampa is a fun city. Lots to do and great people! It must be that midwest influence.
It’s all deversion! Away from the economic problems facing this country. And, you are right - it is sad. The obsession is taking precedence over anything else. 2012 is in my prayers each night.
she is in this up to her bulging brown eyes By Lady Gator on 04/27/2009 2:08 pm
Lady G, If those eyes get anymore vacant…… she’ll be in forclosure!
Deber, the info in the memos that were declassified was not new. You’re not aware it had already been released because you only get your news from Republican propaganda outlets like Fox and hate radio.
This is like the teabagging double meaning which regular Americans knew about for months before right wingers who only get their news from Fox News and hate radio learned about it — cluelessness on such a grand scale that it killed the teabagging movment in less than 72 hours.
Details of the torture techniques approved by Cheney and Rice with Bush’s blessing were leaked from Red Cross reports (which adjudged the Bush "enhanced interrogation techniques" to be "torture") and published in the New York Review of Books and elsewhere prior to the declassification.
Liberals knew about it long before Fox had no choice but to report it — and then, as is typical of a propaganda organ posing as a "news" organization, Fox spun the story to suggest the president had released new information, thus giving that notorious liar Dick Cheney cover to make the same false claim.
