Will the Bush/Cheney presidential ticket be the last all-white-men ticket?

Joan Ganz Cooney: When Political Correctness Takes Over

I don’t think it will be. I hope the parties will not become so politically correct that they always are looking for African Americans, Hispanics and women to run on presidential tickets instead of looking for the best people for the jobs. Sarah Palin, a disaster in my view, was the result of the Republicans trying to top the Democrats in diversity. However, I’m afraid that there will be a big search for minorities and women and that could lead to so-so candidates or worse.

Candice Bergen Doubts We'll Ever Have 'An Old White Guy Ticket Again'

God. I would hope. Dontcha’ think? Isn’t Obama transforming the country forever? Or could it all revert? But I doubt we’ll ever have such an old-white-guy ticket again.

Liz Smith: Let's Not Force Race Into the Presidential Race

I hope the Bush/Cheney presidential ticket won’t be the last all-white-man ticket if the two white men are the best in the field. It would be wiser to let every case develop on its own instead of setting up some kind of racial perimeter. I think actually even this question is reverse racism of a sort.

Let’s say a future George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were to run at some time, do you mean to say we then should insist on a black or Asian or Hispanic person to make the ticket OK?

wOw-zuh, that question surprised me. Implied in the question itself is the question-asker’s apparent belief that Caucasian men are losing favor with the voting public. I don’t know if this stems from the plethora of white-male sex scandals in recent years, the shifting of the U.S. population to more minorities, or the aging of the white-male political power base.

My answer to the question would be "no". Especially with the glass ceiling that still seems to prevent women from reaching the top of the totem pole, in certain areas. I know people figure Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin stuck their respective feet in their respective mouths, but regardless of one’s view on the accuracy of that, I felt an anti-woman current in the past presidential election. Just an opinion.

And I feel that, although women have made tremendous strides in decades, there has been a bit of a backslide in recent years. Women are often still portrayed as sex objects and subordinates in magazines, films and TV.

My friends and I have been asking this question for years and years and years and years and years and years:

Why are there always two white guys on the Presidential ticket?

This is not a new question but I guess it is coming into view for the rest of the population, ie. white males, due to the fact there aren’t two white guys at the top of the governmental hierarchy.  I’m glad the discussion has finally started.  It’s almost like "where have you been all these years"…since many women have been asking this questions for years.

As for Sarah Palin….she was a "white guys" choice and it is obviously they didn’t have clue as to what would attract women voters.

I would enjoy having more estrogen in all branches of government and a little less testosterone.  The "white male sex scandals" (you mention) are a fine example of the "white male ego" in action and most women have had an experience of the "white male ego" sometimes during their lives.

Agree with you LC, but in truth (re "Women are often still portrayed as sex objects and subordinates in magazines, films and TV"), Wowowow isn’t helping that image.

We’re constantly fed trite ‘news’ of little value, as if women would certainly be "gaga" for such topics.

James, it’s common sense - the WASPM is in decline. Look at demographics in the country. As far as two of the same, we just barely survived those two - I’d prefer a Rottweiler running, instead.

I don’t know, C Jay, I had a wasp buzz my head the other day, and another one showed up in my 4-season room. But (somewhat) seriously, I know that the Grumpy Old White Men are declining, but that doesn’t mean all old, white men are closed-minded. That was my only point. As for the Rottweiler in the White House, Cheney’s proven to be a bit of a pit bull, eh?

I would like to think that race and gender would have no impact, when it comes to ‘who’ would make the next best Presidential ‘team’.  Am I dreaming?

I would ALSO like to think that the choice of nominees was supported by the freedom for anyone who chooses so, to throw one’s hat in the ring….Unfortunately, in the country which touts freedom…it still does does not allow  freedom to run for the Presidency, to just ANYbody….

My guess is that we have ALL met people, who would make an excellent leader, for this country….yet because they are not in ‘the country club’ of either party, or well-connected with the power/monied-web, they would never have opportunity.

Now, I realize that people will counter my statement with, "well Obama is the President now—-so you are wrong"—- and my reply is this:  Yes, Obama is the President—-but the powered and the monied are really trying very hard to make sure he fails, that he doesn;t win the next election—-the smear and propaganda campaign is the  worst I can recall since Edison tried to destroy Tesla……Those people who feel they are appointed by the ‘higher powers’ to be the leaders, will do as much as they possibly can, to destroy anyone they feel is ‘beneath’ the office—whether or not it is in the best interest of this country…..

Let’s hope that the best candidates get elected no matter what their genetic nationality or gender might be. The election shouldn’t be about race but the qualifications to lead our country.

That old saying "IF IT’S NOT BROKE, WHY FIX IT", has been answered finally.

They system has been borke for decades, and now the American people realize that you don’t have to be WHITE MAN to accomplish everything.

The fact that President Obama is a man is half the equation, the fact he isn’t white is the other.  Granted he is of mixed parents, but he identifies with the African American population, as do most children of mixed parents.  But his race isn’t even a fact for this reader.

He is a man who has worked for EVERYTHING he has achieved. He had no trustfund, he worked his way through college and made the American Dream a realiity for himself.

As for the woman side of the equation, it is now a VERY STRONG chance that within my life time a woman will either be President or Vice President.

I really pray that this country during my life time will have equilty for real, for all races and gender. And that my Grandbaby(when I get one) could become President for real, not like when they told us when we were children "You can do anything, even become President."  who do they think there were kidding, not me.

The question shouldn’t be last white men, but last OLD men. They remind me of the old order that was in place in USSR when the KGB was in it’s hayday. Younger, more progressive leaders are needed to move this country forward faster and with a clearer direction. I believe Obama is only the beginning, the transition president. He will jumpstart a new outlook for this country. He may be only a one term prez, but more visionaries like him will follow.
