Swine Flu Update | 06/10/2009 8:55 am

WHO May Declare Swine Flu Epidemic; California Man Dies

More cases also reported in Egypt, Chile and the U.K. and on a U.S. warship, but don’t panic.

We thought we had gotten past the worst of it, but it appears swine flu may be rearing its ugly head once again.

A surge in swine flu cases (known in more pig-friendly terms as H1N1) in Australia — the number of cases spiked by more than 1,000 on Monday, for a total of 1,211 — may cause the World Health Organization to soon declare the first flu pandemic since 1968. The virus is also spreading in Chile and the UK. Two American students came down with it in Cairo, Egypt, while the amphibious war ship, the USS Iwo Jima, reported 24 cases.

"We are getting really very close to knowing that we are in a pandemic situation," WHO influenza chief Keiji Fukuda said in Geneva.

But the worst thing that could happen if a pandemic is declared is mass panic. In an attempt to prevent that, the WHO is educating countries on how to prevent stampedes for face masks, or rushing to the hospital for every little cough or sniffle, among other knee-jerk reactions. After all, the regular seasonal flu kills thousands a year, and there’s no proof the swine version is more harmful than that. The WHO says 26,288 cases — including 140 fatal ones — have been reported in 73 countries. The latest death in the U.S. occurred in California today, when an Alameda County man with heart and metabolic problems succumbed to the virus, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.

Now go wash your hands! Click here for more tips and information on protecting yourself from the virus.

Lets not get into panic mode again over this the minute they come out with these statements all hell breaks loose again and the world is coming to and end and we all need to stay indoors away from the outside world.  It’s form of flu for heavens sake it’s not the black death!!!

I agree caj p. If people will wash their hands and sneeze into or cough into their shoulder or elbow and take common sense precautions it is no different than any other flu.

Actually, during the 1918 "Spanish Flu" pandemic, about 97% of people worldwide actually caught it.  And if you think a disease that can potentially kill 50 or 100 million or more people is "just flu", then you are living in a dream world.  Just take due care.  No need to panic, but be smart.

Living in a dream world I don’t think so. In 1918 there weren’t the advancements in medicine as there are today. We are living in the 21 Century.

The key is washing hands…often and for several seconds, not just a quick rinse.  Think of all the nasty everyday places we come into contact with.  I read that grocery carts may be one of the worst.  They are never cleaned and think of all the hands and babies’ butts that have been parked there. Mass transit and movie theaters are just as bad.  With the price of movies these days, that’s no longer a big concern for me.

Not really a concern unless one uses a lot of 100 dollar bills. =)

The grocery stores here have Disinfecting Wipes next to the carts….if your grocery stores do not provide these, do suggest it to them…I have always seen babies putting their mouths on the area where you place your hands,  how scary is that for a parent.

Mel…you are so right about money….have you ever seen a person who takes your money wash their hands before getting your food order ready?

Germs are everywhere, think how many times we would have to change our rubber gloves everytime we touched something….
