I have been very concerned about the far right wing media and how it is playing with fire, pandering to a fringe element and inciting fear and hatred in people who are becoming a mob that could become dangerous. Here NPR reports just one of many examples of this:

Secret Service Probing ‘Should Obama Be Killed’ Poll

"The U.S. Secret Service is investigating an online survey that asked whether people thought President Barack Obama should be assassinated, officials said Monday.

The poll, posted Saturday on Facebook, was taken off the popular social-networking site quickly after company officials were alerted to its existence.

"We are aware of it and we will take the appropriate investigative steps," said Darrin Blackford, a Secret Service spokesman. "We take of these things seriously."

The poll asked respondents "Should Obama be killed?" The choices: No, Maybe, Yes and Yes if he cuts my health care.

The question was not created by Facebook, but by an independent person using an add-on application that has been suspended from the site.

"The third-party application that enabled an individual user to create the offensive poll was brought to our attention this morning," said Barry Schnitt, Facebook’s spokesman for policy.

Because the application was disabled, the responses to the nonscientific polls are not available.

"We’re working with the U.S. Secret Service, but they’ll need to provide any details of their investigation," Schnitt said. "

Healthcare Reform matters to me too. Here is proof of what a mess our healthcare system is:

Thousands of Texans Attend ‘Largest Free Clinic Ever Held In The United States’ To Get Health Care

"Over the weekend, thousands of Texans attended what is being called the “largest free clinic ever held in the United States” to get health care they otherwise could not afford. ABC-13, a local Houston station, reported that the event showed that there is an “epidemic” of people without proper health coverage in Texas:

It’s an epidemic here in Texas and Harris County — people without health insurance. On Saturday, the uninsured lined up to get their needs met.

More than 2,000 people came to Reliant Center to see doctors for free. Many of the people we talked to can’t afford health insurance, especially in the rough economy. Some say it shows the need for health care reform.

Numerous patients described their experience with the broken U.S. health care system to ABC-13:

“My foot was turned upside down,” said patient Lillian Beverly. Beverly has had trouble walking since she took a bad fall three months ago. “I really don’t have the money to keep going to doctors and doctors,” she said.

Kevin Braggs is worried about his diabetes. “I’ve been without insurance for six months,” said Braggs.

And Vicki Robinson wants to keep her son’s asthma under control, but she says it’s difficult. “My husband’s lost his job. We’ve gone through our savings,” said Robinson.

And nine-year-old Kempton knows it. “We can’t afford medicine,” he said.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of the physicians who worked at the clinic this weekend, comparedwhat he saw there to the post-Katrina crisis:

DR. OZ: We had no idea the overwhelming response we would have, the cries for help from the city of Houston and the state of Texas. … This is the largest health mobilization in Houston since Katrina. So a national disaster which brought out this kind of response is now paralleled by a national disaster, because this is just an average day in Houston, and there are thousands of people who need help.

Although this free clinic was especially needed in Texas, which currently has the largest uninsured population in the country, there have been similar events all over the country.

Last month, more than 1,300 patients showed up during a single weekend at a free dental clinic held in Parkersburg, West Virginia. A few days later, nearly 1500 people attended every day of an eight-day free clinic Remote Area Medical set up in Los Angeles. Former Cigna insurance executive and industry whistleblower Wendell Potter credits his 2007 visit to a Remote Area Medical clinic as opening his eyes to the health care crisis in the United States, and says it was instrumental in causing him to leave the industry and join the fight for universal health care."

De, I am from that area. One in six Texans is uninsured.  The turn out jammed traffic and amazed Dr. Oz.  Many local stories emerged that would break your heart.  One was a 46 year old man with a badly infected toe.  Because he has no insurance, he had been doctoring it as best he could.  One look at that toe, and he was whisked away quickly… hoping to save his foot from amputation, but it was likely he would lose his leg.  Another had teeth so bad , they were actually loose in her badly infected  gums.  She could only take in liquids with a straw.

Yet, there are people who do not care about these people, and I simply cannot wrap my mind around that.   It blows me away when there is so little regard for the life and comfort of another human being.  What does that say about us as a country?

I heard a discussion about this subject on the radio today and they were saying these are the sort of clinics that are set up in Third World Countries, and they were shocked not only for the NEED for these free clinics… but because of the extent of the need!

This is something every American should be ashamed of.

Maggie - I would truly like to know…because I DO care.  Why would the very ill people you mentioned not go to a hospital emergency room.  They might have to wait a while, but they would be seen.  And they likely wouldn’t have to wait as long as those in countries with government-run care.

I really don’t understand it.  If I had no insurance, and a badly infected toe, I would sit in an emergency room for hours if need be.  What’s keeping them from going there?

I think it is the bill that they could probably not pay.  My brother had to go to the ER with possible pneumonia a few years ago.  He had no insurance and he got a bill for it and collection calls when he was late paying it.  He made too much money for medicaid even though he had no insurance.

People go bankrupt from the cost of medical care.  They probably did not have the money for the ER and were trying to take care of their families during these hard times.

The ER’s purpose is to " sustain life".  If a person arrives with cardiac arrest, they will do everything possible to stabilize that person.  He is then sent to critical care for recovery/cure… the hospital’s role.  That is when the bill starts ticking.  Most people realize that ,so those without insurance avoid that care.  They leave the ER and go home.

When Dr. Oz and his crew arrived, they set up shop in a stadium.  There were ambulances at the ready.  Clearly, a stadium was not prepared for major surgery such as an amputation, so he must have had prior arrangements with the county hospitals.  I’m taking a guess here, because the news article really did not clarify that.

Several years ago, I stupidly sliced my palm with a fillet knife while washing dishes at a camp site.  I was taken to the ER where they stitched me up, injected me to cease infection, and told me I would need therapy to regain full use of that hand.  I went to therapy for eight weeks and also had my prescription refilled.  I saw a specialist for follow up care.   For a person with no insurance, he/she would not have those prescriptions filled in the first place, would not seek follow up care, and would not have therapy.  It would not be affordable.   That person would also , in all likelihood, be right back in the ER with an infected hand.  I have read that every time someone shows up in an ER, the price is around $1000.  Other than women having babies, there are many repeaters in our ERs. Many are druggies.

Have any of you heard about a piece on one of those internet sites asking people if they think President Obama should be killed? Are there no "moderators" on these sites? It wasn’t my space but its a popular one whose name I can’t remember now. It bothers me because all kids today want access to these web sites, and parents, for the most part, are caving and letting them set up a page. I hope this person is caught and faces the full penalty  for threatening a president, and I call this topic a criminal threat. What is wrong with people today? It seems like the patients are running the institution. And that televangelist Bill Keller, starting a drive to get the president to prove he is a citizen. Well I have a deal for Mr. Keller, if President Obama shows a legitimate American birth certificate, you have to leave the country, permanently. Keller won’t agree, because he is too busy fleecing the guilable flock of his. There is a reason for the separation of church and state, and if all these right wing churches don’t watch out, they may lose all the priveleges and tax exemption they receive from this government. I think the web was Face Page. Their site should be pulled until some guide lines are placed on the internet.

DeBurca, I’m glad you are paying attention to the news. How can anyone talk openly about killing an American President. I am old enough to remember the last assasination, and what it did to the country is not something I want to go through again. Anyone can disagree with any president, go to the polls, vote him out. Get involved in local politics and make sure that the people who represent your views gets elected. It is crazy, but, some of these people think they are good americans. We have become a nation who only wants instant gratification. We want what we now, and the hell with anyone else wants or needs. Oh, and these same people probably call themselves good Christians also. Sorry, it scares me that his mess is what are kids and grandchildren are going to have to live with.

John Wilkes Booth thought he was being a ‘good American’ when he killed Lincoln and he didn’t even have FOX telling him every day of the week to be ‘scared’ of Lincoln! The problem now is that we have a media frenzy of talking heads stirring up all sorts of paranoia, fear and hatred of this President, also manipulating racist attitudes in many, with no consideration whatsoever to the number of unstable individuals out there who eat that stuff up! Pretty soon they start to think it is their ‘duty’ to save us from… whatever Obama happens to be at any given time…  one day its a socialist, the next a fascist, a Kenyan, a muslim, an incompetent, a president who hates America, a "racist with an deep underlying hatred of white people", yadda yadda yadda… you name it he’s been called it!

Hi DeBurca, I agree with you. But, I look to some of the talking heads as the comedy shows they are. I am amazed anyone could take Limbaugh or Beck, especially, has serious news commentators. I think Beck, is seriously delusional. Limbaugh is the egoist in the bunch. But, none of them scare me as much as these ministers who preach hate and prejudice and all in the name of God.  I am not into organized religion although I was raised Catholic, but I can guarantee if Jesus could walk this world again, he would be called the same names as our President, and would not recognize the so called Christian Churches. That Bill Keller guy is an ex-con abd said Islam is not  a religion. Well, like it or not, it is more valid and older than your brand of religion. Again, this is why our founding fathers insisted on separation of church and state. Fear is a direct product of ignorance, and there seems to be a lot of that around today. I recently heard a man over 50, say the Big Bang changed the shape of the world and killed the dionsaurs, he was serious. That is really scary.

I want to clear up that remark I just made about Jesus and the president. I don’t think Obama is the second coming, he is just a man, I meant some people would use some of the same slurs against Jesus, though, after all didn’t he say love one another, feed the hungry, heal the sick, give to the poor? Why, damn, the man must have been a socialist.

Helen: Your last sentence is interesting. We do know that this man, named Jesus, was the subject of the Roman Empire—Augustus Caesar at the helm;  Rome was the dominant power. Jesus was an urban dweller, and sophisticated; there was no middle class and Jesus, being a Jewish preacher and not poor,  was in conflict with the Empire because he was advocating care for the poor and raging against the corrupt system of the hierarchy. Any challenges to Rome meant execution. Thousands of Jews were crucified as was Jesus. So, yes, we could say that this man, Jesus, like many others who were railing against the inequities of corrupt governing at the time could be close to a socialist mind set.

Hi Phyllis, personally I dislike all labels, and tend to take people the way the present themselves to me. i did vote for Obama, not because I thought he was a miracle man, but because in my opinion, he gave me more hope than his opponents. My opinion. What has shocked me, has been the rhetoric coming from all sides. Hate filled, screaming, diserspectful fools. I most certainly do not want this or any other president to fail. They fail then so do we. Gun toting, hate screaming people do not  change anything for anyone. Having ministers and some politicians who encourage this behavior are not good Americans. I would just like to see people give this president a chance to fix things. He is all we have and he deserves a chance to do things his way. Of course, people can disagree with his policies, but, without the lying and screaming they are employing now, and no more fear tactics.
