John Edwards Affair, Rielle Hunter | 08/14/2009 9:30 am

Report: John Edwards to Admit He's Father of Ex-Mistress Rielle Hunter's Baby

Sources say DNA test proves former presidential candidate is the father of his former campaign worker’s baby. What does this mean for Elizabeth?

Bombshell news has dropped today in the drama over whether former presidential candidate John Edwards is the father of ex-mistress Rielle Hunter’s baby.

Sources told WRAL News in North Carolina that they expect Edwards, the former senator from that state, to admit he is the dad of Hunter’s 18-month-old child, Frances. The National Enquirer reports that Edwards has secretly undergone a DNA test that proves he’s the dad and that his lawyers are hammering out a child support deal. Edwards has so far rejected the notion that he fathered the child. A federal grand jury is investigating whether his presidential campaign funds were illegally paid to Hunter to keep quiet about the affair, and the Enquirer says Hunter testified against Edwards in the matter.

So what would this do to Elizabeth Edwards, the ex-senator’s cancer-stricken wife who has stood by her man? She has publicly said it’s not her concern whether John is the father or not, and that it won’t affect her own family. But is that possible? In her new book, Resilience, she says John confessed his infidelity in late 2006, before the campaign began.

Christopher Hitchens writes a piece entitled "The Pain of Elizabeth Edwards" in The Atlantic this week, saying:

Through that hurrah, both Edwardses were living with the knowledge that a third party could at any moment gravely embarrass them. It must have required some unusual nerve for Elizabeth … to go on giving her fighting speeches and fund-raising appeals in between sessions of chemotherapy and acute marital misgiving. She says that she believed the affair to have been a one-off or a one-night stand, but nowhere else in the book or in her public record does she evince the kind of naïveté or credulity that would be required for this to be really what she thought.

Despite all this drama, Elizabeth seems to be keeping busy. She recently opened a unique furniture store called Red Window in downtown Chapel Hill and last month testified before Congress on personal bankruptcies and health-care reform. It will be interesting to see how this ordeal turns out for everyone, to say the least.

Elizabeth has already said that child would not affect her or her children in any way.  So far, that seems to be the case.  Wagging tongues will rehash all of this.  Whether or not John Edwards elects to be active in the child’s life remains to be seen.

Really, does anyone care?

Actually, I think people should care — the way John Edwards has handled himself through this entire scenario demonstrates just how low a man can go………..and the fact that Elizabeth has chosen to remain in the same house with him, demonstrates how even a very accomplished woman can be manipulated.   My guess is Elizabeth wanted to preserve her x number of year marriage — but the relationship ended a long time ago.

I wouldn’t assume Elizabeth is being manipulated. She is dealing with extraordinary circumstances. This is a woman who has incurable cancer, who has children (some young) and who is faced with making decisions on how she plans to spend the rest of her (likely shortened) life. Maybe it is important to her for her family to remain in tact as long as possible so that the relationship and bond between the children and their father will be there long after she is gone. The fact is not one of us can really understand the decisions Elizabeth has and will make about her life. We only know what the media feeds us everyday. We should have compassion for what Elizabeth and her family is going through. Beyond that we should let the Edwards lead their life however they see fit to do so.

i agree, Lisa == part of me knows you are so right, but then the other part of me rails at how badly John Edwards has treated this woman who stood by his side and supported him all these years.

A wise and accurate assessment.

Maggie, I’m agreeing with you on this.   I don’t know why anyone really cares about John Edwards.   He literally ruined his career and his reputation not to mention what he has done to his family.    I’ll be glad when they are out of the news.  Same with Sanford in South Carolina.

I doubt many care about John Edwards anymore.   What they DO care about is that this is symptomatic of what happens to so many women in this country — I think it helps these women to realize that it has nothing to do with them — some men are just louts, plain and simple.

100% correct.  This had nothing to do with Elizabeth.

Maggie, Deber…I’m with you two on this. Who cares?

Another flawed human that failed himself and his family. Nothing new here. I will not comment on this subject any more.

Surprise surprise!!!   HAH!!  What a complete and total ass he is.  One of my favorite lines from a Woody Allen film is "Human beings…. Wow!"  But is anyone really surprised with the extent human nature comes into play?

Maggie we should be talking about Little Johnny Ensign, poster boy for the repubs and member of the C Street Brothel.

Well it’s about time. The child has a right to know who his father is. This is one of those stories I don’t like to think about because I held him in such high regard……boy was I wrong.

But I will say this, the man can’t take a bad photo. :-)

Hey Belinda:  I’m with you on this one.  I don’t why it shocked me but it did.  I am so disappointed in him.  Again, I shouldn’t be shocked, I can count on one hand the married men who didn’t make a pass at me (when I was younger and prettier).  I’ve used this line before but I’ll use it again.

Q:  Why do men have pet names for their privates?

A:  Because they don’t want to leave all the major decisions in their lives up to a stranger.

Ahhhh Belinda, those guys with the Ken-lookare a batch unlike all others - Mitt Romney is another one, watch him.  It seemed quite obvious to me in a short time I saw Oprah interviewing him in a hallway of their home, I guess - she always has to get up close and personal - when his body language shouted out that he simply didn’t care …  More power to his wife - she knows what it takes to remain centered, and for now, she must do that. The children have to have their father …

I am severely disappointed in Wowowow posting this article just to get input on something that has yet to come out. We do not deserve this low level "reporting" to merely keep the fires burning. We have enough idiots doing that on their own without involving us.

Let us discuss something far more interesting, such as Kennedy’s Hidden Cities book. I’ve visited those disgs, and I have been speechless. We do not need to travel to Greece and Egypt to see ancient digs, and ruins when we have older ones right here in the USA.

My heart breaks for Elizabeth Edwards………she really got played for a sucker on the national stage…….at a time when she was most vulnerable.
