When I first got to Mt.McKinley, the instructions were, on meeting a grizzly, to raise your hands high above your head to make yourself look bigger. No where else was this falsehood uttered. When I had my lone encounter with the huge grizzly I stood facing him, not looking him in the eye, but raised my hands up. . and almost died. The bear rose on his hind legs - and was now 10 or 12 feet tall. My move no doubt attracted his attention to me — and he showed that I was nothing. In other situations, I never never did that stupid move again. But if you run, you are done for - prey. If you turn your back on him, done for. And so it becomes a stand-off for 3 hours. In the meantime, with the number of bears on the mountain, I knew another could be behind me but I could never look back either. Once you are face-to-face, the surprise factor is over — the bell factor which warns them you are around I am guessing would just be a come on. No clapping, no moves, and no looking into his eyes as that is a challenge. The learning curve is enormous. To live through it, miraculous. Frank, I know you understand.

Yes I do understand Joan—you had remarkable control—many would have run and that would it for them.I don’t envy your experience one iota.

As you know more than anyone, we can exhibit bravery in one form or other when we would never believe we could be able to handle it. My daughter was on the mountain top with the guide - a mile up - and we have a photo of the huge grizzly but they were too far away - and what could they do anyhow? But as is happened to you, those moments are enblazoned in our heads forever after.

Seared into one’s memory actually so that one never forgets one iota of the experience. I’d love to see that photo some day Joanie.

Yes. I’m in better shape, move a lot better and fluidly.

I have had some kind of pain most of my life from one thing or another, so the pains of aging haven’t seemed any different to me. But I have noticed that since I take better care of myself I get sick less often and actually feel better most of the time. I was always so busy taking care of other people I never paid much attention to what I ate or did. I also find that my negative outlook on my body seems to be fading. I can stand naked in front of a mirror (never would 20 years ago) and say with a straight face - ‘ain’t bad for an old broad’. (of course I do this without my glasses :)

The way I feel about my looks reflects the way I feel about myself. I feel more self-confident than I did when I was younger. Perhaps, self-confidence is as good as good looks, no matter what age you are. And, ladies, from your posts, I can tell that you are all as beautiful on the inside as you are here at WOWOWOW on line. So next time you look in the mirror, tell yourselves that you look absolutely beautiful. Pass along the good word too: compliment anyone and everyone whenever you can. Pick out one thing that looks sharp on another person and compliment him or her. The beautiful smile you will receive will make your day.

Sam - thanks. My day’s looking better already! I took your words to heart and put a few cut wild roses in little cups on friends’ desks. I get in early to work so I can do cool things like that. Have a good day, Sam.

Sam, the wild rose was brimming to full with blooms so at 5:30 AM Wednesday I snipped about a few new pink roses and refreshed those little cup vases — the office even smells good : )

Thanks, Sam! I needed that. Widows never get that kind of praise, unless they say it to themselves, of course.

I am more appreciative of the body I have now, but 20 years ago it was much better all round. However, I realise that in 20 years time I will look back and wish I had the body I had today, which is pretty good considering it has produced four children, so I shall be very happy with what I have. I’m more comfortable with my body, it’s just a little more uncomfortable to me! I woke up this morning with a “ultra strength pain relieving” patch on each knee & plan to put another one on after my morning coffee & daily read of WOWoWOW. My knees are better than the local weather man, I know we’ll get rain this afternoonl Down but not out, going to see Bruce Springstreen tonight in Hershey, gotta keep moving or stiffen up!

Hey, Hines Hammond, how’s that for the power of WOWOWOW? I am tickled pink (as wild roses?) that I shall have made the day brighter for all your friends at work. And remember, no matter what you see in the mirror today, in ten years, you’ll wish you still looked like that :)
