yes, i feel better about my body now than i did years ago. i am more comfortable in my own skin than i ever was as a girl. i don’t have the ideal figure that we see in magazines but, i have a real womans body & it doesn’t show too much of the wear & tear of middle age. i would not go back to looking 20 for anything in this world!

I am 43 yo so at 23 I looked awesome - so yeah, I am not as comfortable - with a dangerously low thyroid, only working out a few days a week, 3 kids, and sleep problems, I am 80 pounds more heavy than I was 20 years ago - but I am working harder at it so hopefully I can get comfortable again…

After 20 years I feel better about my inner self, however not my outer body. Medications, thyroid, and lack of exercise has caused me to weigh a lot more and I have rosecea. I never thought I would get this fat!!! The only plus side of the fat is that I am not wrinkled and look 10-15 years younger…whatever that is worth.

No, I’m not in as good a shape as I was then. But I plan to be better at 61 than I am at 41.

I voted yes. I am finally after all these decades accepting that it is what it is.

Sometimes I am astonished at the timing of your questions in my life… Twenty years ago yesterday I reported for U.S. Army basic training. At 24 years old, I was in great shape, having spent three months preparing for what I heard was a grueling, physically demanding stretch of mililtary training in Alabama in August! Yet… I am much more comfortable with my body today. This past Saturday night I had the privilege and fantastic experience of being completely and beautifully naked at a campfire in the mountains. After a long day of hiking and a hot shower, the evening chill in the air prompted the building of a campfire (unusual for an August evening). It just seemed completely natural to dry in front of the fire. It is now filed in my memory as one of the most sensual experiences of my life. I would have NEVER done that twenty years ago.

Were you alone or bare only to the bears? Sounds like a memorable experience. For me–– I have always been comfortable in my body which has remained pretty much the same through the years but I feel twinges in my hips and my knee, from an old soccer injury––tore the cartilage––acts up every now and then. And because I have a slim frame I have to build up my bone density. I try not to dwell on the limitations the oncoming years will have on my body––I can dance to the music I have now.

Phyllis—I have torn cartilage and a misaligned kneecap from an accident at work, which gives me problems going downstairs (not upstairs, strangely enough); after the last MRI my specialist has suggested arthroscopic surgery, twice, but I said No. I would rather go with the PT. My research online has said that a doctor will often remove the cartilage and then insist one needs a knee replacement. No. I am 52 and want to do as much as possible by myself with stretching and exercise. Do you agree?

Yes, I do agree. I try and walk every day. I would say go as long as you can without having surgery. My knee only acts up when I have done unusual things like running, or bending a long time in the garden. You learn what your body can take. In your case since your kneecap is misaligned I’m not sure how that plays into your pain. If you feel stretching and exercising is doing the trick then continue with that as long as possible.

Twenty years ago my backside was perky and cute; now it deserves its own zip code. How could I be more comfortable with my body now than I was twenty years ago? Wendy Aron, author

i have always been happy to be in my body, but now i have the freedom to make a change when what i am doing hurts. it’s a body made for comfort, not speed, and it serves nicely.

At 66 would you believe that I am healthy, exercise regularly practice weight control and do just about anything I want in my personal life. The thing is I did not appreciate how I looked or felt 20 years ago. It has only been recently that I learned to live with a grateful heart. Thank goodness for that!

I voted yes, because after 61 years I better be comfortable in my body, but if the question was do I LIKE my body ? Hell no ! I wish I were about 5 inches taller with skinny legs. I joke that I am not overweight, I am under tall ! BUT, on the other hand, I am healthy, have no major health issues, knock wood, I try to do a quick 4 mile walk 3 times a week, and have come to terms with the fact I’m not 21 any longer, nor do I wish to be 21. OH, the lessons I have learned since then ! Much more important than a firm butt. And, I thank my Italian father for skin that makes me look 10 years younger, a small gift. I think my days of drying, naked, in front of a campfire are over. Did you ever see a bear stampede ?

Seriously? Twenty years ago nothing ached, greeting the world at 6:00A.M. was a pleasure, consuming more than 1000 calories a day had no disastrous effects…it was all so much easier then. Now? Not so much. What I would enjoy most is the good health of twenty years ago combined with the mentality, understanding and perspective I have today. That would be ideal.
