I send an email greeting to anyone who sends me a card. I miss a house decorated with dozens and dozens of cards but, let’s face it, we keep in touch in a different way now, and cards are economically and ecologically outdated.

Yes to every one on my “E” mail list. I subscribe to a wonderful artist who’s work I enjoy sending to people. So of course I will send an e card to everyone.

I subscribe to her too. I’m guessing it’s the same one. :-) I also send about 40 cards via “snail mail” to family and very close friends.

I suppose I’m old fashioned, but I still send real, paper Christmas/Holiday/Hanukkah cards. And some really are Christmas/Holiday/Hanukkah cards — for those families that celebrate everything, such as ours. I love receiving them and even like the holiday newsletters that some people send. As well, the pictures of family that are used are kept in my own album after spending time on my refrigerator.

I used to send out holiday cards to stay in touch with family and friends, but since losing my job last spring (and my husband losing his), we can no longer afford to buy cards nor stamps.

Besides the shortage of time, they are another of the things that I just can’t see spending money on right now.

Got out of the card habit a few years back when it was difficult for me to address the cards, never got started again. Heard yesterday that an uncle in PA is having surgery tomorrow, may be cancer, he will get a special card.

There was a time when I sent out over 200 cards a year, each with a hand written note…they were mailed, without fail, the day after Thanksgiving. Then one year, just for the heck of it, I counted the cards I received…26. Soooo…now, when I get a card, I send one in return to that person. It just makes sense to me.

Christmas cards were the one thing I had to cut out of the budget. With times so tight I decided to call the people on my list and wish them a Happy Holidays.

don’t send cards and therefore…. don’t get them. am happy about that. cards of any kind… birthday or other are just a waste in my opinion. usually you get them from people that don’t even talk to you the rest of the year. so what do they matter? the people who love and care about me and vice versa… i’m connected to regularly and don’t need a card from. nor do they need one from me. Plus they are just such a waste of overall resources. you’re all thinking “bah humbug” right now huh… lol!

I still send “real” cards and I love getting a pile of them in return. My circle still does the Christmas card thing. I send around 100, receive about the same number. The last couple of years I’ve created cards with pictures of my family. I write notes to most. It really doesn’t take long. The addressing part is easy since I computerized my list years ago…just print out labels. I love sitting in the evening, usually over the Thanksgiving weekend, and writing a little note before sealing them up. I think I did them all in two evenings. I get lots of notes and emails with comments about the pictures and I love seeing my friends’ pictures as well. To me it’s one of the highlights of the season. I look forward to the mail every day. And at the end of the season, I sit down and go through them all once again before pitching so I can really savor the pictures and notes and good feelings.

Barbara —-I, too love to send “real cards”. And, I too, love to receive them. Over the years we have developed so many friendships. Some people we only hear from once a year. I take the cards from each year - tie and red ribbon around the stack and display them, along with the cards from this year. It’s become a tradition I’ve passed on to my daughter. It’s nice to compare everyone’s lives from year to year. And, I like you, love to sit down at the end of each season and go over each card. There are a lot of memories I’ve retained over the years. Just makes Christmas even more special. It’s always been my favorite time of year! I guess I’m just a sentimental gob!

I am a full time caregiver for an 88 year old father in law with health issues. I would love to find the time to mail cards but with three plus appointments a week and a house and yard to care for I am lucky to get a small tree up and wrap presents. Friends who have been in my position understand. Those who have never been a caregiver do not.

whoa! (*to Chris Glass)…..maybe, just maybe that 88 yr old f-i-l would enjoy hearing what you write to other family member’s whilst signing the cards, etc..I took care of my grandpa (papa john) for 17+ years, while raising 3 kids, a husband, working on a small farm, driving over 125 miles to go to dairies and buying calves and re-selling them for an income, and still cooking meals from farm-raised beef, pork, lamb, goat, chickens and turkeys…..and still taking care of papa john 4+ times a week who lived aprox 9 miles away, but, loved contributing to the “letters/cards”…and he taught my kids how to play Dominoes…which helped w/their Math…which helped w/Chess…..it’s a win-win situation when all generations help each other…..what did I get out of all the care? no money. BUT, the knowledge that papa john loved ME and his great-grandkids….we got the best….his LOVE..and that’s PRICELESS! would do it all over again!
