Wishful thinking, Ms. McCain, but with today’s technology, just about every look given, gesture made, and words spoken by a candidate’s spouse are immediately available on the internet. But, cheer up, the Patriot Act has made the rest of us fair game, too.
I wish we had the paragraph from which the statement was taken.
It is apparent that in our political culture we have husbands and wives who act as partners in their quest for the Presidency. In which case, it would be logical that the spouse be “fair game” for the media. But what if we have a candidate whose spouse is only available for occasional photographs or special events? The spouse/wife does not elucidate on policies held by the candidate and will only speak at events generally attended by ladies. Should she be treated the same as the “partner” spouse of the opposing candidate? Unfortunately, yes. Of course, it is unfair but much of the media coverage of our candidates is unfair.
As for the children. They are off-limits, no exceptions.
The only mistake Cindy made in her statement was the word “are” - if she had said, “I don’t think that spouses and family members SHOULD be fair game . . ” she would have been right. Are they fair game - absolutely, but that doesn’t make it right.
Children should definitely be off-limits. In a perfect world spouses would be too, but it’s not. Anyone in the public eye is a target.
If Cindy McCain believed her own statement she wouldn’t continually bring up her interpretation of Michelle Obama’s remark about pride in America. Even Laura Bush defended Michelle.
Gee, all right Liza D since you asked.
Here’s a piece on wOw’s own Peggy Noonan….very attractive pix. I have to say just skimmed it. Peggy is a conservative writer…but I like her…and perhaps will have more time to read it later.
It’s a beautiful day and time for a walk. Plus I have a citizen journalist assignment from Huffingtonpost to go spy on the local GOP campaign HQ…pix included. Ha.

Just another example of how the media is out of touch with middle class Americans. We really don’t care about personal lives of public sector employees anymore than we care about personal lives of those in the entertainment field. I’ve got my own life to live; it is quite satisfying and most interesting. Would the world want to hear about it? Probably not. Although Whoopi many be interested in laughing with me about some of my life escapades! (Good thing I can not run for office - there would definitely be a best seller in the making for my family!)
I think Cindy is wrong…….
I want to know everything I can about the Person who will be leading our Country. The spouse is fair game. Their personal lives tell us a lot about what kind of people they are.
If the children are underage (and are law abiding) they should be left alone.
If they are out drinking (as the Bush Twins were) when underage they also become fair game.
The Press was unmerciful about the physical looks of several of our former first children. I thought that was disgusting. First of all they were just young girls…….
Perhaps Cindy is distressed by the fact that her husband called her a
C___t in public. She should be. If a man ever called me such a disgusting name I sure wouldn’t be married to him for long.
Her husband should be judged by that comment………I hope Americans will see just what kind of man he is. His temper is scary.
