Cindy McCain said, 'I don't think that spouses and family members ... are fair game.' Is she right?

The kids, especially the very young ones, are totally off-limits. Period. Spouses, if you are involved i the campaign and you are—you take the chops like the candidates. But I’d like to see and I’m not going to see, some reasoning by the press especially Fox News and there ilk. It will be let’s take it out on anybody anyway we can to sell our crap products. Journalists? my butt.

RE: By Dona Howlett on 06/20/2008 7:15 am For real??????Did he call his wife a c_ _ _ t in front of people? Geeze…..he went down to the bottom of my “I like” list. I knew he had a worse than worse temper, but that is taking it too far.

Dona dear yes he did in front of reporters—frankly he apparently hs episodes where he ‘snaps’—I’m seriously beginning to think PTSD is not fully healed in him but that does not explain his abusive, vile behaviour to his wife nor shoul it condone it. And if He ‘snaps’ like that, what the hell is going to happen in a crisis situation in the White House is he does lose it? This is something that needs to be addressed by him and he hasn’t yet.

Hi Frank: I’m here, just more into reading than writing at the moment. Haven’t seen a topic that can benefit from my input. Glad to see you back.

Mrs. McCain may think that spouses and family members are not fair game but it never seems to stop the press from digging for something on any member of a politician’s family, no matter how small.

If you can hold a candidate accountable for what his reverend says in public, you certainly should hold him/her accountable for what his/her spouse (not children) says in the public domain.

No truer words were spoken in this whole discussion Brother James. I support what Cindy said, but it is an unrealistic expectation. Everyone connected to the candidates is fair game by us and the media. That includes EVERYBODY that’s had any business or personal connection to the candidates. That means if those person don’t exhibit HIGH MORAL CHARACTER at all times, they will be crucified before the public. That’s the game.

I think that anything and everything that a CANDIDATE running for the office of President of the U.S. does or says, is fair game. Whether on camera, or on. For instance, when Cindy McCain was brushing John McCain’s hair, and he went off on her and called her the “C” word. The public should know about that. That action was on him. It speaks to his character and temper. It is very telling. This is the man who wants to run our country. As far as the spouses - two thoughts: IF they are campaigning, I think what they say WHILE campaigning, IS fair game. I do not think their private lives should be fair game. For instance, whether Cindy McCain should stay with John McCain after he called her the “C” word in public. None of our business and shouldn’t be a focus in the campaign for the presidency. It detracts from the issues, which SHOULD be the focus of the campaign. For instance, whether Cindy McCain has or had a drug problem. Not our business. She is not the one running for office. Leave that alone. For instance, whether HRC should have stayed with Bill after the Monica business. Not our business. Should not have been a public issue. For instance, whether the Bush daughter or daughters had or have a drinking problem. Should not have been a subject of the campaign. They were not the ones running for office. I do not think the media should stalk the spouses, and report on their every move and gesture. They should not be looking for “dirt” on them. What they wear, what they feed their kids, how often they leave the kids alone, on and on. That should not be an issue in this campaign. They are not the ones running for public office. IF a child of a candidate is NOT campaining, leave that child alone. IF a child of a candidate IS campaigning - yes, what that child says, while campaigning, is fair game. I also want to say that I am glad that Whoopi made the point, and cleared up, on The View this week, “the quote” of Michelle Obama that we have seen and heard over and over. Whoopi showed the video of Michelle Obama with the exact quote, which was, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m REALLY proud of my country.” What we have been hearing over and over, is the quote without the word REALLY in it. Thank you, Whoopi!

Yes, let’s have Whoopi decide what people “really” meant. I gather some of you would have approved of Hillary calling her hubs, then a sitting president, a “dumb M-Fer” outside of Blair House in full hearing of reporters. This was early in the Clinton admin. You hate the Clintons, so that is unremarkable? This is pretty situational, all this. People use language, I do, probably a lot of us do. It’s not too attractive, but it happens.

Star: I’m confused with your response here re: Whoopi’s clarification of Michelle’s statement. Did you mean it to sound condescending? If, so, then as I said I am puzzled because the word REALLY changes the meaning making her statement perfectly clear.
