Depends what is meant by aging. Older men look better naturally than older women for a longer period of time But. women remain healthier than men for a longer period of time. A lot of factors are in play.
Aging has to do with attitude. Our body ages because of how our genes are configured. That is the physical part anyway. But my grandmother had it right when she said that you’re only as old as you feel! And to me a good attitude - with humor is the answer to the real youth we seek.
I am fascinated by all these comments…I am on a big self-improvement program for health reasons and James, you keep referring to stretching exercises. Do you have any specific website where I can learn more on stretching? Sounds like a great idea!

The trick is to drink plenty of water, start out slowly, never stretch to the point of pain, don’t stay in one stretch for more than 20 seconds, and never bounce. Here are two that I really like. One is from Uechi-ryu karate-do. It’s called kubio, which is neck rotations. Do them very slowly to avoid injury. Rather than just rotating your head, try tilting your head down, chin toward chest. Then back to neutral (straight on) position, then tilt head down again. Repeat three times. Next, tilt head all the way back, then back to neutral. Repeat 3 times. Now, look completely to your right, then back to neutral. Repeat 3 times. Then, do the same looking all the way to the left. Now, swing your arms forward in a looping motion three times, then back three times. Really stretch the shoulders. Now, with your feet not moving, rotate your torso all the way to the right, then to the left. Repeat 3 times. Now, while standing, lift one leg up so that the knee is even with your belt waist. Rotate your foot in a circle, down and around three times, then in the other direction.

My first inclination is to say “it is all in the genes” how we age. But NO, you have to factor other things in that are actually more important. Look at others whose age you cannot believe. To me, it is so much in how men AND women take care of themselves — you know, exercise, right food, relaxation.
Those that have had tragedies and serious illnesses to handle more often than not look like they have seriously aged — no matter the years. It takes a toll like little else.
As to who wins in the youthful Olympics - men or women — it may be a tie, all other factors considered — but Lord! more and more I am seeing “older men” who look mighty delicious.
Since my recent retirement I have had the opportunity to go to the local shopping mall during the weekday. There I see many middle age and older women. They walk briskly around the mall in walking shoes, are dressed very nicely and have their hair styled every day very attractively.
The women vastly out number the men. Also, the women just look better. Hair, clothes, body weight and smiles. I would bet many of the women are widows or divorced. I’ve also noticed their cars are very nice. Over all, the women in my neck of the woods seem to be doing extremely well in the retirement years.
Oh, did I mention that in the shopping mall are lounge chairs placed in the commons areas and the men are usually sitting in them and the women are briskly doing the walking.
I thought, from a medical standpoint, women outlived men due to cardiovascular incidents, etc. However, women who continue to work are catching up with the men in that regard.
My husband’s parents lived to be 94 and 96. They were still driving and went to church until the last year of their respective life. They died within 18 months of each other. Their parents lived long lives also. They never smoked or drank and church was a constant in their lives. I expect my husband to outlive me and have advised him to find a wife as quickly as possible. Reason: married men live longer than single or widowed men.
However, single women live longer than married women. Guess we all know what that means. Men worry the heck out of women and they die to get some peace. LoL.
Dabney, Good post and funny at the same time :) I believe that attitude is everything it comes down to how we accept the challenges that we incure in life. We have no control in regaurds to the genetics of our parent’s, so about the only things that we do have control over is in how we take care of our selves physically…But most importantly, our outlook on life.
Elaine, so right! Outlook on life is most important. I am so working on that! I will be going to Mayo Clinic next month for a definite diagnosis for the demyelination process recently found on an MRI of the brain.
The pain and difficulty doing the things I like to do have been taking a toll. But I feel these years are suppose to be my golden years and I intend to take a big bite out of every minute.
LOL, ki b doesn’t like “Golden Years”. But I have worked for a long time in a stressful occupation The light at the end of the tunnel was kinda golden.
I think that women made of cheese age better than men made of butter —ahahaha! Other than that sweeping generalisation, I would have to go case by case—
