Gosh, reading all your posts makes me realize how much fun it is to color one’s hair. When people ask why I don’t color my gray, I usually say “well, I’ve earned it.” But the truth is, my hair grows very fast and it’s really tough keeping up a color. So au naturel it is.
But I’ve been known to change my hair length and style rather unexpectedly. Once I was short and spikey, even before many kids did it. Matter of fact, where are those scissors …
Rocky Rocky….go get those scissors. Right now I have one of those spikey stand up “hair dos” and I absolutely love it. Who cares if I supposedly am too old to wear this style (according to my older sister who has had the same boring style for 30 years). I’m going to keep this do as long as I want it! So join me…buy some mousse and go for it. “Spike It Like It” is my motto! LOL
Damn straight I color my hair! I started turning gray in my 30s and I wasn’t having any of that! Gray in the front, brunette in the back - ridiculous. All these years later, the gray has advanced, like a slowly marching army, but it loses the battle every six weeks when I have it covered with a deliciously-named color that keeps me from a being two-toned mama.
As a cosmetologist I’ve had so many colors over the years. I was a bleached blond for years……….that was my favorite color. I also loved dramatic red.
Then I bought a house with a swimming pool about 30 years ago………..chlorine turns bleached blonde green so I went back to my natural.
color. A few years ago I let my hairdresser color my grey, but I hated the color and the problems….For the last 10 years I’ve let nature take it course. I wish It would turn entirely white. It’s pretty much white all around my face. I like it. Both my parents had turned almost all white by the time they were 85.
I hope I don’t have to wait that long.
Of course if I were still working I’m sure I would have all kinds of color again
I was a great colorist…………the favorite part of my job, that and hair cutting..
With all the wild stuff people do to their hair today……………what fun!
It is fun - but nobody has mentioned the possible (likely?) toxicity of hair dye. For years my glands would puff up and I would get a headache whenever I colored my hair. Still, the cultural pressure to look “young” kept me coloring it month after month. When I was in my mid-50’s I had a major epiphany in a salon and decided to never color my hair again. It was hard going through the grow out phase. The good news was that it pushed me up against the many fears I harbored about getting older. I have to say that facing down those fears has been as freeing as never having to color my hair again. I LOVE my silver hair - and can’t believe I waited so long.
Maggie………….I love your silver hair also. You are a beautiful woman. As I said I wish mine would turn silver all over. My husband hair had turned all silver about three years before he died.
If women who want to let their hair grow out would just have one last dye job…….color your natural color. Then when the roots came in you wouldn’t notice very much.
I found the same thing with deodorant. Now I use Tom’s of Maine Natural and it’s made all the difference. We really are a bit too casual about what chemicals we put on our skin. I am concerned about all the sunscreen as well, especially children who are getting it slathered on them daily.
And I’m with you, silver hair is great looking. Very striking to look at and it makes a great statement.
Maggie Rose, your silver hair is beautiful!!
I wish I hadn’t colored my hair. Now the hard part. As you said going through the grow out phase. I always relent and color it. Maybe next time I can hold out til it is completely White/silver again.
Maggie
Thanks for that and our picture looks great. My husband says why don’t you grow it out, but I have such a dark grey underneath. He always tells me he is grateful that I haven’t aged as much as many of our friends, but if I go grey, trust me I will look old. My 15 year old already thinks I am old (I’m 56) - people would think I was his grandmother.
I just don’t think I am brave enough, but can’t wait for the day that I am.
Remember the Clariol Commercial,,,the tag at the end
“Only her hairdresser knows for sure”.
Do I color my hair? You betcha!!! And, it’s red!!! And it’s been red a long time!!!
I can’t believe there are so many other redheads here!!!
Someone said “Do blondes have more fun” — I kinda think redheads do!!!
I have an appointment for this Saturday morning.
I’m seriously considering having my hairdresser shave my auburn colored hair all off, and paint the back of my head:
HADENOUGH?
VOTEDEMOCRAT.
Whadayathink? I wonder if I can auction it off - name space. You know, like they do at the ball games. Probably not.
NP….oh my God …that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. I do remember reading about auctioning off advertising headspace on ebay…..Go for it! ha ha ha ha
Peace and Goodwill…..doll
NP, you make me laugh but nerveless me settled for a bumper sticker on the car. At Home Depot the other day one of the check out women had shaved the back of her head and had tatooed the word “bitch” while at the other register this middle-aged man attacked his machine in a lovely mid length skirt and fluffy blouse.
But, getting back to actual hair…hell yeah and since my late thirties. Au natural is bla brown. Started with some henna and went from there. Lately, was just doing blonde highlights and the overall effect was fine until I went in for a makeover. Bigwig make-up artiste from Hollywood was there and would come around to supervise and offer opinions. She got to me and admired my plump lips and good skin and said all went so well with my “slate” hair. Holy god, she probably thought I was ancient and holding on for dear life. That did it!! The “new” grey caught my eye and I thought and thought…..go for it. It is now almost white and I love it! I went in to Borghese and got some eyeshadow foundation and new eye shadow and they showed me how to do “the smokey eye” with a light touch. It looks so good and I don’t even look made up! Also grabbed a very soft blush and just a hint of shine for my lips. My husband who is younger than I and my son think I look so much younger and think it is just the hair color. LOL
Yesterday my husband and I were in the grocery store and this women came out of nowhere and said, “you are so glamorous”…she walked away and there was a pause. Husband said, “is she high or what”. I didn’t even asked what he meant.
Hi Agyness,
As I told Doll Lady, above, I just got home from the hairdresser’s. I chickened out.
I have my enriched auburn hair, once again.
Say, I enjoyed your story here.
What a nice compliment you received. Stay stunning!
