No, happy to report that I have virgin skin. I think I will keep it this way, although I half-heartedly promised my young adult daughter that we would get penned together. I might back out. Or I will put the tat in a hidden place. But that would mean that I would have to expose that part of my body to a stranger- not too cool with that.
I’ll tell you what I don’t like and will kill my daughter if she does one, those neck tattoos. I won’t reveal my personal bias, but I feel on a woman it sends the wrong message.
JMK Singer…that you for that story…I too with 5 tattoos never understood why anyone would want tattoos all over, at least one’s you could never cover up…now when I see tattoos all over I will think of “your girl” and what she did for those men and women. I guess Beauty isn’t just skin deep!
I was OLD when I got it, around 49. this was a few years ago. Backstory is that I was lost in a rough neighborhood in Philly one night around midnight. Couldn’t locate the home of my friends. Didn’t have a cellphone, and couldn’t find a payphone. But I did see a tattoo store with an “open” sign lit in the window, so I went in there and they allowed me to use the phone. My friends were just a block away, but their home was difficult to find. I was grateful to the guys at the tattoo parlor, so later that week I came back in and got inked. Had been considering it anyhow. I got a hammerhead shark inked on my right arm. Actually, it looks like a blue penis with fins! The hammerhead shark is my favorite wild animal.
Ms. Singer, what a touching story about your daughter-in-law. Condolences, most sincerely.
I got my first tattoo at age 50 as a rite of passage. It is a sun/moon combo on my left shoulder. The sun for where I was going and the moon for where I’d been. I liked it so much that I got another tattoo on my right breast. Ever mindful of the ravages of gravity, this one was a long feather quill pen, which will stretch with time. The pen means my story is still being written.
Some of the stories you ladies posted kept me in stitches!
Thank you Annymin for your reply. I always thought a snake would be great on the breast it would just get longer.
I am not into it for myself at this ripe old age.

Yes, I have a wee rose on the small of my back. I got it when I was 51 and it felt very daring at the time. I am now 65 and considering getting another in a more prominent place. I had just gone through a divorce and wanted to do something that my ex husband would not have approved of. I know that sounds a little immature, but hell it felt good to just do something kind of daring for a change. I still am taken aback when I see someone covered with them, especially a young woman who may regret it when she’s my age or younger.
Yes, Judy, I like it! I’m in the midst of a mid-life crisis myself and considering a tattoo. I’ve NEVER done anything daring in my life!!!!! Its about time!
I dislike them immensely. Historically tattoos were once associated with royalty, but when I grew up they were associated more with bikers and low lifes. I guess that impression just sort of stuck. I’m not much of a fan of ink drawings in art either, so maybe it’s just the art form in itself that doesn’t appeal.
