Maurine H, your post is one of the more interesting ones I’ve read lately. It shows you take responsibility for your own thinking based on what you have learned. As a republican, I, too, feel it is my right and privilege as an American to know what is going on in Congress and we hope for the same transparency you hope for. What is difficult for me, personally, where Obama is concerned, is that if a person would not practice “transparency” during their campaign to answer the questions about his background, his radical affiliations, why he felt a need to have his birth certificate “sealed” in Hawaii, and who financed his education, then I find it hard to believe that he is now, all of a sudden, going to practice transparency in the Oval Office. So, he has made more than several serious judgements in character in administration choices. Perhaps more serious than that, to me, is that he allowed Nancy Pelosi to put together a stimulus package that was stuffed to the rafters with special interest programs that could not, in any way, “jolt” a sluggish economy. Nancy Pelosi made Obama look bad. Presidents don’t wag their own tails and we have to now ask ourselves who is wagging his? Is it Pelosi? Is it his mentor, Axelrod? Is it someone from his past who has had the greatest influence on how he thinks? No one can answer that question. When someone hasn’t earned my trust, I have to look back and figure out why they didn’t. Lastly, I feel Obama is selective in his transparency and if he continues with his “fear tactics” over this recovery plan, he will lose more moderate democrats and his popularity will further decline. No one wants him to fail. I have never stated that. I have stated that I do not believe he is doing what is right for America at this very moment. I agree that he inherited a bad economy but he isn’t the only president who took over the White House with a crisis at hand and he won’t be the last. I, too, will continue to inform and educate myself about what happens in Washington, DC. That’s what everyone should be doing.

deber - I read your comments with interest. So much of the discussion here deteriorates into the trading of the nastiest of insults that it’s not worth a reply. Your post above wasn’t like that, so I’m back for a second comment. Since you have stated that you are a Republican, and you probably know I’m a Democrat-at least for now- we obviously have different viewpoints about how the government should operate. But I believe that we both want those in Washington to make wise decisions that will support an economic recovery. Let’s start with your mistrust of Pres. Obama. Whatever you may have believed during his campaign -and there are myths still circulating - he was elected to the Presidency, fairly and squarely by a substantial majority of voters. So, if possible, put that mistrust on the shelf for now and start examining his current actions and reserve judgment about his character until he’s actually been in office for more than 3 weeks. If we focus on the substantial economic chaos his administration has inherited from the Bush administration (there is plenty of data to support that fact, but if you prefer, from earlier administrations as well - it really makes no difference at this point) - we are where we are. The President walked into a house where the walls were full of cracks and the foundation was crumbling, and for eight years the Republican majority knew this, spent like drunken sailors and refused to deal with the systemic decay that we now see. The litmus test, for me, is how is the President leading? What goals is he presenting to Congress? Is he willing to discuss and compromise when he can’t get consensus? Has he made overtures to and held discussions with the opposing party? How will the upcoming decisions made affect you and me? I disagree that the President is using “fear tactics” as a device to convince Congress to pass the stimulus bill. Congresspeople aren’t stupid, but they can be rigid and spiteful. The Republicans are still chaffing about their trouncing in November. I have listened to several Republican Congressmen and women speak against the bill, and I really cannot follow their logic. This country is in crisis - deep, deep crisis - the most acute crisis in my lifetime. Homes all around me are in foreclosure and businesses in my community are closing every day. Building projects have been delayed or canceled. I’m sure the same phenomenon exists where you live. This are realities, not “tactics.” I understand budgeting - I have had 25 years of creating and controlling multimillion-dollar budgets, and I would consider myself a conservative when it comes to budget and finance. In the current economy, I see no alternative that will save homes and put people back to work other than the stimulus package. Have you read through the entire proposed bill? It’s posted in its entirety on Huffingtonpost.com, and http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-5140, and I am sure it’s on other websites, too. If you read every paragraph, you get a picture of how grave the economic situation is, and how much shoring up will be needed to even begin to correct it. Bottom line, even though I supported him during the campaign, I’m giving President Obama’s administration some serious scrutiny. I’m watching Congress and listening to the speeches -pro and con- about the stimulus. I’m trying to sort the wheat from the chaff, and I’m trying to really see which Representatives/Senators are blowing hot air because they’re worrying about being re-elected or because they want to be obstreperous, and which are sincerely committed to constructive repair for this country’s economy. Aside from contacting my Congressional representatives and continuing to listen and read, that’s all I can do. But I consider it my job to do that.

Maurine, I enjoyed reading your sensible (and straightforward) comments. In particular, in the midst of recent political controversies in Obama’s administration, I am doing exactly as you are. Specifically, “…. even though I supported him during the campaign, I’m giving President Obama’s administration some serious scrutiny.” Because, as you stated, ” … I consider it my job to do that.” All the best to you.

Thank you Maurine and Deber for having a civil discussion and one that smacks of reason without rancor. It is so disheartening to read snide comments about a President that hasn’t even gotten his feet wet and already the mud slinging begins. None of us–––I repeat––none of us can know what a difficult job this is especially when politics is such a messy business. Some people, before Obama was elected, made fun of his savior image and yet these same people are criticizing him for not being.

Phyllis, Wow! What a great post! You often are able to convey power messages in concise language, which directly addresses the core of issues. Thank you.

Excellent! What an intelligent post! I so agree with you. Especially about it being our job to be aware of governmental activities. Huff-Po is one of my favorite sites. I also read several other publications both online and in print. When I’m not at work I even try to watch C-span while I’m taking care of my daily tasks. I listened to the former president’s radio address when I could and I watch President Obama’s address often as well. I feel if I’m uninformed I cannot render an intelligent opinion. More than ever, I want to do whatever I can to understand and to help. I can’t just sit idly by and not share in the work it requires to make changes in our country.

I listen to the former President’s weekly address too. And I listened to - and still listen to - the rebuttal.

When I can! I really want to more often but am doing too many jobs and caring for grandkids so I’m on the road with “little kid” music in the CD player.

I have no desire to listen to the same falsehoods over and over…truth be known, our president does not know how to make a decision, he doesn’t know history, he doesn’t know economics. If he doesnt have someone telling him what to say he fails horribly. I am not for sure how long he will be able to fool even those that believed in him so desperately. Only those that are incapable of putting 2 and 2 together….seems getting outside the box is a dying quality.

So, did you forget that Bush is no longer in office?

I believe in President Obama. I’m thrilled to have a president who can actually form a proper sentence AND speak it. It’s completely ignorant for anyone to think that he alone could change absolutely everything, and do it all at once. He’s only been in office a little over three weeks. Change takes time and patience. We have eight years worth of a huge, huge mess to clean up thanks to former President Bush and his mistaken ideals. No one seemed to be mouthing off as he flushed our economy down the drain. You just stood by and let it happen. The entire House and the Senate are constructing the stimulus package. You can’t blame one person alone if there’s something in it you don’t like. And, if you don’t like it, then do something about it. Write, call, e-mail, visit your senators and congressmen instead of whining, complaining and being persistently negative. That attitude gets us nowhere and doing nothing at all is simply not an option.
