I’m not much of a card carrying anything. Not coffee, book stores, car washes, gas, department or discount charge cards of any type. Those all require a fat wallet and then it breaks the line. The silhouette must be preserved! And everyone knows, let in one AARP and all the little AARPs will follow.
I always had the sense they were yet another lobbying organization, especially after their involvement in the Pharmaceutical bill. And, at 50, the last thing in my mind was being old enough for them; guess what, it’s 16 yrs. later, and, I’m still not chomping at the bit to join. Besides, I get tired of all the junk mail they send out.
Yes they did, DeB. As I said, I always thought they were more of a lobby group that wanted our $$ for their interests. I have a lot of friends that were members, but I am not sure after that Bill that they stayed members. Every body was upset about it.
I am still a little irritated with them for their role in the prescription drug bill, which turned out to have adverse consequences for many consumers of medical services, and is enriching the drug companies to an alarming degree at the expense of the taxpayer because it forbids negotiated volume prices. They are basically an insurance company with a magazine.
You are so right. I cancelled my membership when they lobbied for the prescription drug bill and I’m glad I did. I have looked into many of the types of insurance they sponsor - long term care, automobile, etc. I have ALWAYS been able to get a better rate elsewhere. They’re kind of a fraud.
What I will never stop being astonished by is the fact that this bill was rewritten in the middle of the night to create the hole of the doughnut [where prescription drug coverage stops] and more by these pharmaceutical lobbyists, and that the resulting mess was so long that no one who voted for it actually read it until after it had been passed. And to make matters worse, Congressmembers were given the wrong information about how much it would cost. But not to read it at all! Apparently that is the case with most every bill in Congress these days. There is too much pressure and not enough time.
