The martial arts saved my life last week, Kit. I flat-lined (coded) for four minutes at St. Mary’s Hospital. I went in for middle-ear surgery, and whatever anesthesia they injected me with caused my heart to stop. I was in the hospital for four days. They did the full-body-scan, stress test, ultra-sound, etc. It revealed no damage to the heart, and my heart extraction was 75%, which my family doctor says is amazing, considering most people are in the 60% range. Also, my chest had no soreness after four minutes of CPR, which the doctors also found amazing. But a cardiologist friend of mine says it’s the years of hard karate/kung fu training.

I do if it is an outfit that warrants it. In the evening, being in a good stocking with a beautiful shoe simply “completes” an outfit. Besides, stockings can cover flaws(hey, ladies, you know you don’t shave every day), especially if they are dark. Never, never wear white ones. In the past year, I have discovered thigh highs and they work beautifully. But, most of the time, when I am home, and certainly at home, I am barefooted. Socks in the winter to keep the tootsies warm.

not since 1995. except the occasional wedding, come to think of it even that, not since 2004. and that was a rare appearance of sticky, sweaty, running, binding, ….. not quite the level of chinese footbinding, but same male aesthetic torture for us that we bought into, eh? high heels next to go anyone?

Never will I give up my lovely heels! Not spikes, mind you; I would kill myself. And, not the pointy things that are so silly looking. But, I love the way a good pair of heels enhances an outfit. Same with a lovely scarf and one good piece of jewelry… Barefeet at home; clogs outside

No, I never worked in a business that required that strict a dress code, thank God. In the rock and roll world of recording studios, I sure didn’t want to out dress the clientèle!! When artists and musicians are recording they dressed comfortably, so we could, too. Now I work in the tropical plant world and it can be messy at times, so comfortable attire rules.

At my desk writing an introduction to mediation for litigants in Federal Court. It’s all boiler plate. The lawyers sign an acknowledgement stating that they have read it; another annoying strip of red tape before they find a judge to fix their problem. Everyone either wants to get paid or get off the hook. Mediation turns the problem back to the parties. Revolutionary. Mama won’t decide who smacked who and which child sits in the corner. Mediation, the art of sitting together and respectfully working out a solution to the problem. The neutral party ’ the mediator’ is in the room helping the parties ascend to their better selves but the conflict belongs fully to the participants. It is often a very crooked path to get there but when the files close on a case I am deeply satisfied. Susan Joan Davidson atttorney-mediator

Gosh, that’s mighty interesting, but we are all extremely curious as to the question at hand which is–––Are you now, or have you ever worn stockings to work? But, on the other hand–––if I ever need a litigator…

I very rarely wear anything but jeans and slacks, so don’t have much reason to contort myself into pantyhose. But if the occasion arises and I must wear a dress or skirt, I will wear black tights or hose; my legs not being my best feature!

Unless it’s summer, I would always wear stockings with heels, especially with short skirts and I don’t quite understand how one walks around in heels without stockings. Don’t your feet get sticky and sweaty? Amen, Lily, to the black tie affairs, but speaking of stockings enhancing legs that need enhancing check out Diane von Furstenberg in the photos that Liz posted: Now those are legs that either need stockings or a very long dress.

I’m 45, but got it, Franko. Broadway Joe wore mink coats and all that after winning Super Bowl III in 1969 for the N.Y. Jets.

My Two Cents
The office I work in now is very casual so I do not wear hose. I wore hose for years with high heels, I ruined my feet so now I wear sandals or comfortable shoes. I agree that hose are dressy but the are unbearable in summer ! I attended an outdoor wedding two years ago in July and the temp. was well over 100. I knew I could not wear hose, so I put on faux tanning lotion, none of the other women wore hose. I wouldn’t mind wearing hose occasionally if someone would come up with a comfortable version. The panty part of pantyhose is awful.
