I can barely get through English most days! I grew up understanding “Chicago Polish” my grandparents spoke no English and my father was born in Poland so his use of English was sometimes hilarious. I can understand some Spanish but would never feel comfortable enough to engage someone in conversation.
I don’t see anything wrong with expanding the production of administrative and legal forms to embrace a number of different languages. It would only open up administrative jobs to minority populations. Tax forms in, say, seven different languages, including English. Why not?
I speak English—and I can speak some Spanish-I took 2 years of it.
I also understand Polish as both my grandmothers never spoke english to me only polish—-funny I only know a few things to speak in polish but I totally understand it?
I am fortunate to have been born in a bilingual country with two official languages so I speak French and English. German was spoken in my home so I speak that too and I took Mandarin in university and I can understand it but with all of the inflections and dipthongs I don’t speak it very well. All three of my children have been and are in French Immersion so they all speak at least two languages. In addition to that my oldest son speaks Japenese as he has studied it since 8th grade and my daughter is currently also learning Mandarin. My husband speaks English, French and Italian. We are all citizens of the world so I feel it is important to learn to speak more than one language.
I speak English, some German (though not very god), and being a Norwegian, I of course speak Norwegian, and then there’s no problem communicating with people from Sweden or Denmark.
Since I got electrocuted and brain damage last year, I am still mostly good at english, although often there is poor contunuity of spoken language and goofy grammar and words, and still somewhat good at two others, and have had a hard time retaining or learning the new language that I hope to learn more of—we’ll see—
