Most of our friends are in bed by 11 these days — but we, long ago, established our own tradition, breaking our the champagne - our favorite - and always - always - have toasts to each other, followed by memories usually of our lives (which we believe have been wonderful and filled with joy) — and we always somehow find this part of the evening — and the night — very special. . . and a way of bonding that works so well for us. And yes, the champagne is cooling — and I can hardly wait!!!

Lily Tomlin — you looked sensational tonight at the Kennedy Center honors and did such a great job — and what an honor to be on stage at an event of that magnitude. Bet it was exciting to watch at home tonight!!! Wow wow!!!

Joan — Most of our friends who can stay up until at least 10 — we will all rent a limo and go out for an early dinner. Home by 10. Then hubby and I will probably watch what is left of the last bowl game today - then out with the bubbly - the toasts- the dancing (usually in the kitchen) to our favorite music from the 50’s. (Lord we’re getting “more senior” each Happy New Year. Each year we are together is more special than the last!! Oh, yeah that wonderful bonding. The wonderful humor — I do so love being married to this incredible man. Hope you and your special man have a wonderful evening filled with your wonderful memories!

Lady Gator — what can I say? We know it. We are two of a kind. . . and I didn’t want to blow everyone away with the full story (which I will NEVER tell, of course, but you know) … but yes, we will be dancing in the kitchen also to the slow dances we still love so much. Already today we have been laughing and being outrageous — and we said we plan to get worse (as always) - or is it “better” as the night wears down. My wow photo is from my 50th anniversary dinner and I am still smiling and happy, knowing that I made the absolutely right choice and it only seems to get better. I just KNEW you would not let me down and latch on to what I had written — as we know as no one else does — and so we will think about you two lovebirds tonight also — as the other couple who knows how to make it beyond special. And to you and your wonderful husband, we send you sizzling hot wishes for another wonderful year together. Isn’t it WONDERFUL!!!!!

You ladies are so incredibly lucky (not that you need me to tell you that.) I came home from work to find a message on the machine from my “husband,” telling me he’s going to a friend’s house to play poker and will see us tomorrow. That’s o.k., but I think it’s sad that I’ll probably never experience real love and companionship like so many of you women have. I’ll indulge in a little trip on the pity pot and then concentrate on all the blessings in my life. Onward 2009 (different year, same s***.)

We never go out New Year’s Eve. There are too many drunks on the road. I’ll be watching the ball drop from my living room safe and sound.

My husband wants to go to a party at his buddy’s house, but I am drained and tired. Too much has happened in the last few months. I want to watch some Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies. Drink Champagne and snacks, if anyone drops in have some fun.
