Based on the buzz I’ve heard; the current zeitgeist; reviewing the list of ‘Best Picture’ Oscar winners since the 1920’s and considering relationships between the tenor films to their times; and from my film UCLA film classes; I’ll guess that ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ will win the Academy Award for Best Film. Can’t wait for the Academy Awards. Wonder who will host? Since 1990, the most frequent hosts have been Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Whoopi.

Isn’t Hugh Jackman hosting this year?

Not sure. Haven’t seen them all. Saw Slumdog and Benjamin Button. Slumdog was done by Danny Boyle, who I believe did Millions. I like it, don’t know if it warrants best pic. Ben Button, was like reading a long short story. Not a lot of dramatic interaction, there was not real build up to a climax, or much dramatic resolution of the problems the characters faced. Pitt played it so still, he was interesting and loved watching how he interpreted it, but not a lot of drama or struggle there. Everyone else around him struggled.

Hello Frannie E. My son and his wife saw BENJAMIN BUTTON and described it similar to your ‘review’. Also popular here in San Francisco is FROST NIXON. I’ll be here a little longer, and I think I’ll skip the former and see the latter. Actually, I’m very curious to know how others liked THE READER. All the best to you.

Maizie You are in San Francisco, is it real cold up there? How do you like it? I think I am going to head up that way late spring with the guys, when it warms up a little. Even in SoCal this morning it was like 30 degrees. Yes, I want to see Frost Nixon and The Reader as well. Frank Langella looks like he does an amazing acting job, will have to check it out for sure. Love Kate Winslet so want to see The Reader.

Frannie E The weather has been very cool at night, and it was rainy the first few days I was here. I’ve always loved San Francisco and have visited here many times. I’m here because I decided to join my son and his wife after attending a memorial service for my late dear friend (who was the mother of my daughter in law), which was held at the Sant Bani Ashram in Sanbornton, New Hampshire the weekend of Jan 17. I think I’ll be here for another week, and I intend to take in several cultural events before returning to the doldrums and cultural void in Brandon, MS. This past weekend I attended a music folk festival in Sausalito, CA. And, tomorrow I plant to take the BART to Union Square and do a little shopping. Then, I will spend the remainder of the day in the city’s theater district, where I will probably take time out to see FROST NIXON. Thanks for asking.

Frannie Em, ‘Benjamin Button’ is one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s lesser known short stories. Aren’t you the smarty pants! Hope you’re doing well. Peace and grace

Hi Beth I am doing well. Took a great long walk in the cold cold park this morning, but it was beautiful. I had heard that it was an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, so I was trying to make a joke, but my jokes usually go a little flat. I have never read the story, but after seeing the movie it looked like they took a great idea, and revisited it with much more, because it seems like a really long short story. Short stories don’t always have a big dramatic punch in there. They take you to a certain period, let you look at it while the characters interact and struggle or whatever, and then make a point, and that is what it seemed like to me. It was great filmmaking. Well done and tasteful, I wanted to meet everyone and have a meal with them, you know, but it lacked dramatic interaction for Benjamin. Have you seen it? What do you think?

Hugh Jackman will host the Academy Awards. Well, he will be different, that’s for sure. I can’t even vote on any of these films, as have seen none, but just from what has been written and the GG’s and SAG’s, I’d say “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Please, Hugh, take your shirt off in the opening !!! Skip the lame jokes …. you can sing a little song, you do have a great voice, but by all means, make women, and this one in particular, happy …. just rip the damn shirt off and hear the collective sigh ! A little oil rub would be ice, but I don’t want you to ruin your tuxedo, oh hell, I don’t care if you ruin the damn tuxedo …. oil yourself up and rip the shirt off … you know that’s why they hired you !!! I’m sorry, was that a tad sexist ?? Must be this cold morning air … sorry.
