In light of the salmonella outbreak, will you stop eating tomatoes?

There is nothing like the taste of a fresh picked summer tomato. As long as I can get organically grown heirloom tomatoes when they are in season, I’m a happy person!

Rachel- “As long as I can get organically grown heirloom tomatoes when they are in season, I’m a happy person!” Great avatar. When lived in Carmel used to drive the coast road back and forth to San Francisco often….about 90 minutes. About twenty minutes outside the city it gets quite rural and a twisty narrow road with the ocean on one side and farm fields backed by large hills on the other. In the summer there’s no better drive with the moon roof open and the radio blasting, smells great. And there are produce stands. Huge bunches of basil, stacks of heirloom tomatoes, a riot of color just great. I never go into ‘supermarkets’ to me it all looks like over processed, unhealthy Frankenfood…and rather support the small organic farmers. In Carmel, there is a large organic farm in the next town, Carmel Valley, and they deliver a huge box of weekly produce for something like $25 to your door. What a bargain.

To the beach, You are one fortunate woman living in a place where you have access to such beauty and perfect taste. We live full-time in a motor home and travel around the U.S. for our business. In the summer months, we keep our eye out for organic farm stands. We will be spending July-August in Asheville, NC, the most organic-friendly place we’ve stayed yet. They have farmers’ markets in different locations daily so the local organic farmers always have a place to sell their creations. And in the restuarants we visited when we were there in May ‘07, all the menus say “We support our local and organic farmers.” This is one reason why we put a deposit on a green-built condo that is going up next to the French Broad River. Asheville spoke to us when we were there last year and we want to live there when we retire.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes indeed. I am a little worried that a panic over tomatoes will put some of the smaller farmers under. Meaning that tomatoes will be more scarce next year. The salmonella outbreak is pretty limited. http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/saintpaul/ Plus, since this outbreak began two months ago and I have been eating tomatoes steadily all that time, it seems silly to stop eating them. Especially since California tomatoes have been exonerated, and I try to buy local. But I have noticed that restaurants have stopped serving tomatoes.

I have tried to grow tomotoes and the chipmunks take a bite out of each one. So frustrating. And the rabbits eat other veggies I have tried to grow. Oh- and there is no comparison to a home grown tomato. Oh well, we can’t have it all.

According to what I read/heard on the news, the Roma tomatoes and the large round tomatoes used for sandwiches and hamburgers were the ones to avoid and the cherry, plum and ones still attached to the vine in the supermarket were the “safe” ones. The news reports on TV, Internet and newspapers claim the contamination came from water run off from adjacent farms of livestock soaking into the ground, pigs, cattle, etc. getting into the root area of the tomatoes and that was why it couldn’t be washed off.

I meant “grape”, not plum tomatoes (safe). Plum tomatoes not safe.

I’ll just continue to grow my own! Store tomatoes are a bland substitute for real tomatoes! You don’t have to go out and buy any expensive equipment to grow upside-down tomatoes, either. Check out Steve Spangler’s blog and you’ll see how to do it with cheap buckets with handles. http://www.stevespangler.com/archives/2008/05/29/upside-down-tomatoes/

Not an expert but love tomatoes. Get them at the corner fruit stand or the supermarket. Had some yesterday, some today. and will probably have some tomorrow.

I eat very few tomatoes anyway as I am allergic to them and only eat them when they are cooked or processed in some way……..even the really huge ones I grow!

Interesting idea … “a summer without tomatoes?” … NEVER! That’s because we grow our own, NJ style - Beefsteak, Big Boy, Cherry. 8 plants is never enough for my hubby who eats them right off the plant! They do taste SO good - right out of the garden. We do our own “Organic” composting too. Maybe those tomatoes with salmonella - are a by product of “outsourcing” our farming industry to other countries, big “non-family” farms, and lessening the funding for inspectors in DC? 100 years ago, our Italian ancestors were told to stop eating so many vegetables, especially tomato’s thought to be “poison”!!! Now, we know, veggies & tomatoes are highly valued for their health benefits!

I am one of those independents who felt Obama was inexperienced at the start and I still feel the same. I will not be voting for him. Hope McCain picks a good VP. if not perhaps this will be the first time I will not vote. dk

As far as tomatoes go, as a farm girl I know a good one when I see one.
